Is It Really Possible to Die By Peeing on the Third Rail? An Investigation | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

Kenneth Weene's insight:

How could I pass up this topic? Heck, I almost wanted to go experiment.

Giving a very large dose of famotidine (200 mg daily), sufficient amounts of the drug are able to penetrate the so-called blood-brain barrier to affect the histamine system in the brain.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Basically this is re-purposing of a heartburn medication to a much greater value. Of course we don't know the long-term side-effects of using what is actually Pepcid in heavy dosages.

I hate books | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
They're heavy and they make moving impossible. But an iPad just doesn't hold the same memories
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The mixed joys of books: Heavy, musty, take up space. Hold wonderful memories and little notes you've made. Great for pressing flowers and holding treasured pictures and old letters tucked away with fondness. Which books do you hang on to? Which can you give away or replace with a digital copy?

Hundreds of chimpanzees are getting a reprieve from the laboratory under a sensible new plan.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This program started about half a year ago and the photo is from Feb.; but the opinion piece from The Times just came out, and I thought it well worth sharing. While I don't like using apes for experimentation, it may at times be necessary. The least we can do is to treat them humanely. Hey, isn't that the least we can do to our fellow humans as well?

Yarnell Hill Fire: Lone Granite Mountain Hotshots survivor speaks publicly for the first time

Yarnell Hill Fire: Lone Granite Mountain Hotshots survivor speaks publicly for the first time | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
For the first time, the lone Granite Mountain Hotshots survivor spoke out in public, after 19 of his fellow firefighters lost their lives battling the Yarnell Hill Fire last Sunday.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I cannot imagine the horror of that day. I cannot imagine the suffering of those 19 firefighters. While I am critcal of our save the structures at all cost approach to wildfires and believe we should be developing lightening rods to help avoid fires, that in no way diminishes my awe of these brave souls or my sadness for their families and loved ones.

Long-term cannabis use may blunt the brain's motivation system

Long-term cannabis use may blunt the brain's motivation system | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Long-term cannabis users tend to produce less dopamine, a chemical in the brain linked to motivation, a study has found.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Dopamine, like serotonin, is a crucial part of the brain's functioning. It is hardly surprising that psychoactive substances alter such neurotransmission. For that reason, while I support legalizing most drugs, I do not support their use by children and teens. Use should be informed and should be delayed until the basic brain structure and chemistry have matured.

American Way of Birth, Costliest in the World

American Way of Birth, Costliest in the World | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Maternity care and childbirth cost far more in the United States than in other developed countries, but studies show that their citizens do not have less access to care during pregnancy than Americans.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

When greed instead of the well-being of its citizens becomes the organizing principle of a society, there is going to be pain. From that pain will surely come anger and one hopes change. And let us not for a minute believe that these costs the amortization of research or the unreasonable cost of malpractice.

With the economy slowly but steadily improving over the last 18 months, it's becoming increasingly clear how horribly we botched public policy during the downturn.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Yet another analysis of why austerity during recession is bullcrap. Of course the political right won't listen or learn. They will go on chanting, "Taxes bad. Greed good!" until we all are living under the remains of a bridge.
