New rechargeable flow battery could enable cheaper, more efficient energy storage

New rechargeable flow battery could enable cheaper, more efficient energy storage | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Researchers have engineered a new rechargeable flow battery that doesn't rely on expensive membranes to generate and store electricity. The design may support the widespread use of solar and wind energy.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I have for a long time said that the single greatest contribution that could be made to the future would be a better way to store energy. Electricity can be generated easily enough, well not that easily, but how to store it for automobiles and other devices in an efficient manner?

You can’t name your baby “Messiah” in Tennessee

You can’t name your baby “Messiah” in Tennessee | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Citing Jesus Christ as the reason, a judge ordered a 7-month-old baby's name be changed from "Messiah" to "Martin"
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Actually, the judge did point out the possibility of conflict with other people. From my point of view the name amounts to child-endangerment. I can see the torment now, and I'm not talking crucifixion. What are some of the outrageously foolish names you know people have given their children?

An analysis showed that Kendra’s Law in New York has had positive results for some of the most difficult and expensive patients to care for.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As a mental health professional, I believe this to be a major positive change in mental health service delivery. As a libertarian, I find it appalling. Sadly, I have to admit that there are those people who cannot function as competent members of society.

Some brave women from a Darfur village speak out to fight back against the brutal sexual violence being used as a weapon of war in the region.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While we can not right every wrong in the world and we cannot police every country, neither should we forget the horror of such ethnicity based violence or the waging of sexual aggression. I do not know how to help these women, but I do know that I am horrified by what seems to be the lowest form of human behavior.

This, like many subjects in society, can be easily discussed by some over the dinner table, and for some always remain, as if taboo, in the back of the mind, but, none-the-less present. Of course, for many there are religious restrictions to even broaching the matter.

Why Are American Drinkers Turning Against Beer?

Why Are American Drinkers Turning Against Beer? | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Bad news for brews: Among the youngest Americans, beer preference is collapsing.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

My three hypotheses as to why this change:
1) Fewer people going to baseball games, which is where many people learn to drink beer. Add to this the growing availability of wine at games of all sports.
2) Decline in manual labor. Beer is a great drink if you are feeling depleted and dehydrated. More and more of us are working at computers and not getting the fatigue or the sweat.
3) Beer industry has shot itself in the health foot. Seriously, if you are told to drink this new "lite" stuff because it's less heavy and less filling, doesn't that imply the regular beer is in fact too heavy and too filling?

Florida congressman’s bill would do away with U.S. raisin reserve | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The measure follows a farmer’s suit, which challenges the law on Fifth Amendment grounds.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I love raisins and I know this law will drive down the price, but that isn't why I agree with the idea behind it. If people want to raise a crop and do it responsibly, the government should not be taking away the fruit of their labor (pun intended).
