Wonderful Words: Guest Author, Kenneth Weene | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
What did we know of him? He had been an officer in His Majesty military—navy, marines, or army, the story did not say. We also don’t know what he thought of his sovereign’s madness, the regency, or the great affairs of state that took place across the Atlantic. Indeed, we know only his first name, Reginald, his rank Lieutenant, and his manner of death, hanging.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Thanks to my friend Maggie Tideswell for sharing one of my ghost stories. Hope you enjoy Stargate Love.

The recommendation marks the first time that LAPD Chief Charlie Beck has called for charges in a fatal on-duty shooting.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is good to see that in some cases police violence will be properly scrutinized. Of course, the trial hasn't yet begun and we certainly don't know the verdict, but at least there is a beginning.

Three Little Pigs awarded contract to build 13,000 new homes | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The Prime Minister has taken the unprecedented decision to be guided by fairy tales from the land-of-make-believe or his ‘big society’ as he calls it. Drawing on the construction acumen of a family firm of pigs - claiming a long history of ‘keeping the wolf from the door’ - David Cameron has said that best examples of affordable housing are fictitious, citing numerous gingerbread residences as an example.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
While this satiric piece is aimed at the British government, it is universal in both the amour and the truth. Meanwhile, if you want another great read, might I suggest A Tale of Three Pighs by Sal Buttaci? Here's the link Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Tale-Three-Pighs-Salvatore-Buttaci-ebook/dp/B015BWSBPM/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1452007626&sr=1-1&keywords=Pighs

Abdul Rahman Haroun, the Sudanese man who walked from France to England, might still face charges for obstructing a railway engine.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Evidence that once we know a person, look into their eye and hear their words, our hearts soften. But, what of all those who never get to be seen or heard, those who are wasting in refugee camps around the world or even worse, those who will not reach the camps before they perish? One man saved is better than none, but Mr. Haroun reminds us that there are millions more who also need assistance.

But he still loves Tom Brady.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is a sick puppy calling for more brains damage to young athletes. I guess he'd have no problem sending our troops into danger or ordering federal authorities to fire on civilians. Just what we want in America, a dumb, hate-filled, jerk who likes violence.

Camron Rauch's curator insight, January 14, 2016 10:49 PM

1. In this article, Donald Trump explains an extended metaphor between the National Football League and the United States in a speech he gave in Nevada. He says, like our government, the game of football has too many regulations, even if it protects the player's(citizen's) safety. He states that the NFL and the USA are not as strong and credible as it used to be. According to him, he plans to change that.

2. In class, Donald Trump is the topic of discussion numerous times. We also learned about political parties, him being the leading Republican in the polls.

3. This article is biased against Donald Trump.

‘No safe limit’ for pizza | NewsBiscuit

‘No safe limit’ for pizza | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies, 66, shocked the UK’s population with the announcement today that there is no safe consumption level for pizza. Dismissing the notion that pizza is OK as part of a balanced diet as an old wives’ tale, Dame Sally said that even one slice a day could lead to muffin top, manspreading and even bingo wings. While apologists point to the role of pizza as part of the fabled Mediterranean diet, the new guidelines advise that even a small hand-thrown crispy margherita is literally the thin edge of the wedge, leading rapidly to the family-sized deep-pan meat feast and related problems such as being unable to get off the sofa, drinking Stella, shouting and watching The X-Factor.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I'll be eating that last slice of my meat lover's pie when they put my body in the oven. Wait, how about being buried in a coffin that looks like a pizza carton. So much for those food guidelines. Pass the chianti.

Steven Avery was arrested for murder in 2005
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I really enjoyed this TV series, but I am amazed how many people have been galvanized into action by it. Is he innocent? I lean that way, but the DA claims much of the evidence was not shown in the series. But the reason for positing this is: Since when can a sate prisoner by pardoned by the president? As far as I now this petition makes no sense, which makes it another example of how uninformed Americans are, and that is a real concern.

The Daily 202: A Ted Cruz win in Iowa could kill the ethanol mandate

The Daily 202: A Ted Cruz win in Iowa could kill the ethanol mandate | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

Every Republican who has won the Iowa caucuses since 1980 has strongly backed ethanol.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

I don't like Cruz, but I assuredly want him to take Iowa because it is well past time to get rid of this subsidy. All government subsidies of businesses should phase out over time, especially in the energy sector. If costs don't fall and demand rise over time, it is unlikely that the technology is worth maintaining. Given world hunger, why do we need to keep the price of corn up? And given that Monsanto is the big winner in the corn game, why would anyone with meaningful ethics want to push ethanol?

Despite claims to the contrary, 2015 will have been a historically safe year in the United States -- for cops and for everyone else.

Maybe we're being hyped by those who want to sell police and scared citizens more weapons and equipment and by the incarceration industry. Maybe, just maybe, the American people are being lied to by irresponsible politicians and certain false news reporters. Could that be?

We have Lincoln wrong: Our greatest Lincoln historian explains his real Civil War motivations

We have Lincoln wrong: Our greatest Lincoln historian explains his real Civil War motivations | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Too often, we settle for the idea that Lincoln fought to save a mythical union. He really fought for opportunity
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Too often history has forgotten that Lincoln was first a Clay Whig and only later did he join the new Republican party. I think that these historians over emphasize Lincoln's concern for the common man; what he really believed in was the economic expansion of the American system. That said, it is important to note that he was a great believer in America and in her growth and unquestionably saw the South as a drag on that growth. He also knew that breaking the country in two would mean less growth. So yes, this is part of his motivation.
