Organic for the people

Organic for the people | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Residents of Brooklyn's East New York aren't holding their breath for a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's to open nearby. They're growing their own fresh, organic food.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is glorious. We can only hope that the children of East New York learn not only to appreciate good, healthy food but also that they learn that growing ones own food is a noble endeavor. More importantly, I hope that the people of New York recognize that a bit of local food production enriches not only the diet but also the aesthetic of their city. Community gardens are precious.

Giz Explains: How to Actually Make Coffee

Giz Explains: How to Actually Make Coffee | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
You probably brew coffee, like most people, the most insipid way possible: Using a Mr. Coffee that you fill with pre-ground coffee from the supermarket. There's a million other ways to make coffee, and they're all better. Updated.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

And I thought I was a coffee nerd. Well, here you have some real information; but don't try to process it before you've had your first cup of the day.

BERLIN: Munich threatens to bring its brooms into 21st century - and sparks an outcry | Europe | McClatchy DC | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
After 850 years of using tied-together twigs to sweep the streets, Munich this summer decided to give newfangled plastic brush brooms a try.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I hate to see such traditions go by the boards. Sure, they'll probably have a twig broom festival as another tourism event, but that isn't the same. I wonder what the environmental impact will be.

USPS "prostituting" its stamp program, former postmaster general says as he quits panel
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Should we have pop culture stamps or should we go with more serious aspects of culture? Do you think that Harry Potter stamp would attract new philatelists? I'd especially like to hear from any stamp collectors out there.

Why Aren’t More Americans Atheists?

Why Aren’t More Americans Atheists? | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Many expressed surprise recently when, in one of its periodic surveys of Americans’ views of other faiths, the Pew Research Center found that atheists fare poorly—fully 40 percent of those polled described their views toward atheists as “cold.” Jews, Catholics, Evangelicals, Buddhists, Hindus, Mormons—all are viewed more...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Besides being a good read, this essay asks us an interesting question. Why are we or are we not atheists? What is the purpose or basis of our individual belief in God. Assuredly, it is not about science per se. As my hero Spinoza suggested, we best find God in the order of the universe (including the wonder of evolution) rather than in the assumption of a higher beings whimsy and textual appearances. At any rate, I thought I would ask my friends to share why they are believers, atheists, or can't decide.
For my part, I will rest with Martin Buber, not in the form of his faith but in his reason for it - the aesthetic model it offers.

Is Genocide Right For You?

Is Genocide Right For You? | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

Many people have a misconception about genocide, which is not banned by international law, but is strictly regulated so that it can be conducted safely and sustainably. This is as it should be. The role of government is not to dictate to the market what forms of ethnic cleansing are to be traded, though the government still plays an important role: regulating genocide so that it can be safe for consumers. The market has spoken, and people want genocide! But we must all work together to keep this cherished international institution solid for the 21st century. The children are the future.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Sometimes the best way to get people thinking about evil is through humor.

California teen sets self ablaze in 'fire challenge' | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A Southern California teenage boy set himself on fire, encouraged by a new online fad known as the 'fire challenge.' The boy's injuries are not considered life threatening.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Teen boys will do almost any stupid thing to prove their manhood. I wonder what the girls in their lives think of boys who do something like this "fire challenge."  Meanwhile, I just think chimpanzee and of course "Darwin Award."

Regular marijuana use bad for teens' brains

Regular marijuana use bad for teens' brains | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Frequent marijuana use can have a significant negative effect on the brains of teenagers and young adults, including cognitive decline, poor attention and memory, and decreased IQ, according to psychologists discussing public health implications of marijuana legalization at the American Psychological Association's 122nd Annual Convention.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I support decriminalizing pot, that doesn't mean I think it safe, especially for teens and young kids. Just as tobacco and alcohol should come with warnings and public education, so should marijuana. There is a health price to all substance use, and kids deserve the information necessary to make informed decisions.

Tennessee Supreme Court justices win after GOP campaign against them

Tennessee Supreme Court justices win after GOP campaign against them | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Tennessee voters rejected an effort Thursday to oust three state Supreme Court justices who were under attack by conservatives for being too liberal for the state.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Congratulations to the people of Tennessee. Judges who write intelligent and well argued decisions that follow the law should not be removed from office by an electorate that wants a meaningful judiciary. It is judges who change the law or oppose commons sense, for example calling corporations people, that I want to see removed. Interesting that the figure head who lead the campaign to oust them congratulated them on their victory. Now, if the people of TN find themselves a new lieutenant governor, that I would understand.

Last year, more than 273 million people visited one of the United States National Parks Service’s properties. Kenneth Weene's insight:

Tired of bad publicity, fifth-graders write an op-ed for The Chicago Tribune that includes this line: "This isn't Chi-raq. This is home. This is us."
Kenneth Weene's insight:

One can only hope that these great kids' view will not be changed as they grow up, that they will not find themselves locked in by poverty, drugs, and absence of opportunity. We must work to make sure that no child's best choice is ever to join a gang, pick up a gun, or degrade their life with drugs. It takes a nation to raise our children.

Octopus mom protects her eggs for an astonishing 4-1/2 years

Octopus mom protects her eggs for an astonishing 4-1/2 years | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - If someone were to create an award for "mother of the year" in the animal kingdom, a remarkably dedicated eight-limbed mom from the dark and frigid depths of the Pacific Ocean might be a strong contender. Scientists on Wednesday described how the female of an octopus species that dwells almost a mile below the sea surface spends about 4-1/2 years brooding her eggs, protecting them vigilantly until they hatch while forgoing any food for herself. It is the longest known egg-brooding period for any animal, they wrote in the scientific journal PLOS ONE. ...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Fascinating science. But, my mother would have said this octopus mom shows nothing compared to her putting up with me all those years.

Language School Blogger Fired for Writing About Homophones

Language School Blogger Fired for Writing About Homophones | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A social media specialist for a Utah language school that teaches English to non-native speakers says he was fired for writing a blog post about homophones—words that sound the same, but carry different meanings—because his boss was afraid readers would think it was about "gay sex."
Kenneth Weene's insight:

And people pay to go to a school run by this guy. I suggest that he might be in a better line of work, say working in a sewer, where his mind already dwells. Meanwhile, this teacher/blogger sounds a bit zany but is probably a great teacher.
