The design might seem simple, but it's definitely not.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

A great attempt to make the world a better place, and started by a teen—well, now he's 20. The goal is to remove the plastic that is littering our oceans with a device that won't harm sea life of any kind and won't use man-made energy in the process. It ain't easy being green, but we should all try.

The Single Best Piece of Marriage Advice Ever Given

The Single Best Piece of Marriage Advice Ever Given | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
What to tell newlyweds
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While this is a lovely single piece of advice, it is not the one I have given for years. My advice, "Find something at which you can both laugh and spend your day in good humor. Find something at which you can both cry and spend your day in shared feelings. Find something to do together and spend the day with hands sharing work. Find something to love in one another and spend the day reminding your partner of that love."

Homeschooling expert: Sex-ed is a liberal plot — make kids watch guinea pigs do it instead

Homeschooling expert: Sex-ed is a liberal plot — make kids watch guinea pigs do it instead | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

"A conservative activist, who has been billed as a homeschooling expertby tea party groups, warned over the weekend that sex-ed courses were a plot to increase the number of Democratic voters by destroying marriages."

Kenneth Weene's insight:

She has it backwards. Since the absence of sex education leads to more out of wedlock children, it is her approach that will assuredly produce more Democratic voters. Nope, that doesn't make sense either since what has marital status got to do with voting? Bottom line, this is the kind of cuckoo think that keeps me watching the far right. Why pay to go to comedy clubs when I can just listen to them?

This Is the Story of the Hamburger

This Is the Story of the Hamburger | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Its rise from a lowly patty of the chopped meat to the aristocracy of foods; its charismatic and delicious descendants; the arguments it inspires — over ethics and blends and tastes; and Silicon
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I love a good burger, but they aren't easy to find. Blah burgers abound in a world of fast food joints that are all about cheap. But a really good hamburger is a joy. A nice mix of meats with not too much fat. Medium rare. Forget the bun and make the cheese blue. Tomatoes are fine, but I can do without lettuce except as a bed for this treat. A roasted poblano between cheese and meat is fine. Serve with slaw or fruit. What time do you want me to drop by?

Aided by the Sea, Israel Overcomes an Old Foe: Drought | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A major national effort to desalinate Mediterranean seawater and to recycle wastewater has provided the country with enough water for all its needs.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Can the United States learn to use water wisely? Do we have the national will and pride necessary to work on any problem with the determination and perseverance that is required? National determination to survive and prosper is the bedrock of Israeli politics and makes this kind of success in the face of a great challenge possible.

How Your Favorite Fast Food Meals Are Changing

How Your Favorite Fast Food Meals Are Changing | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Chains from Taco Bell to Pizza Hut are throwing out the additives and embracing the natural ingredients
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Since I don't eat fast food, this is not terribly important to me personally; but I think it represents a change in the way we think about our food. My question is will this be a fast enough and big enough change to save our food supply from companies like Monsanto that claim they are providing us with the best GMOs and chemicals. It bothers me that many who oppose big-brother government are willing to trust big-brother corporatism.

Modi’s Radical Plan to Remake Welfare in India

Modi’s Radical Plan to Remake Welfare in India | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The government says it’s taking “incremental” steps toward reform, but the plan to reshape payouts for the poor is nothing short of a revolution.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As in the United States, the best way to help many, perhaps most poor is to give them money for the short term and training so they can earn on their own for the long term. However, there will always be those who need more supervision and protection because of their limitations and there will always be those who will take advantage and deceive. While it is certainly time for the government of India to end the feudalistic largesse programs of the past, it is folly to believe that the dependency of many can be ended so simply. The great contribution of Congress was to stabilize the country after independence and to develop great higher education. However, giving grain and sugar to the people only could go so far. India is becoming a major power and the poor must be allowed a chance to rise with the tide. Good luck to the people of this great country.

A growing experience: Prison gardens transform inmates who tend to them

A growing experience: Prison gardens transform inmates who tend to them | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Gardening returns to prisons in an attempt to reform society’s worst by teaching them how things bloom.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While the selection process may bias the outcome—better behaved convicts are generally less likely to re-offend—there is no doubt that these programs are producing results not only in terms of food but also in terms of lower recidivism rates. There is dignity in work and sensitivity in working with nature. The biggest problems with prison labor have always been abuse (the chain gang approach), competition with workers (how to keep employment in the community from suffering when prison labor is cheaper), and transferable skills (how to have job possibilities for the released). These programs are definitely a step forward.

Scientists Figure Out How to Retrieve 'Lost' Memories

Scientists Figure Out How to Retrieve 'Lost' Memories | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

"The latest research shows memories “lost” to amnesia aren’t gone forever; they’re just not accessible" The photo is of serotonin crystals.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Fascinating how quickly our understanding of brain function is growing. As a psychologist I love this kind of research. Of course, what is interesting to me when reading this report is that the stimulus, the specific room in which a shock was administered, wasn't needed to elicit the response, freezing, which suggests that the memories of stimuli and the responses to which they are connected may be stored separately.

I hope that readers stop to think about the titles in that book. "Mothers' Teat" (plural/singular) and "Hansom Dove" (not handsome and why a dove?" Book titles should matter.

The dentist's office is not a scary place anymore. (dental office, cool offices)
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I'm happy with a normal dental office with a good dentist and good hygiene. My dentist has large windows in his exam rooms that look out onto a quiet space often inhabited by birds. Works for me, but if you are looking for wild design to calm your fears, here are some great dental offices. My favorite word for fear of dentists is odontophobia, what's yours?
