The fastest-growing counties for Latinos are in . . . North Dakota?! | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Yup. And most of them don't speak Spanish, either.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
If you look at these numbers, the big takeaway is that Hispanics are having very much like all immigrant populations in America, including starting in a few central points of initial recruitment, chasing the dream to different places and assimilating by learning the language and becoming part of the economy.

John Kasich bashes Harry Potter: Ohio governor thinks it’s “weird” that Daniel Radcliffe is an atheist

John Kasich bashes Harry Potter: Ohio governor thinks it’s “weird” that Daniel Radcliffe is an atheist | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
With no prompting, the onetime "moderate" GOP contender criticizes Daniel Radcliffe for not believing in God
Kenneth Weene's insight:
While this vignette does demonstrate Mr. Kasich's religiosity—something I can respect in his life— it also demonstrates that he really has little understanding of people or of how the world works. More to the point, I would guess in a referendum for popularity more people would vote for Daniel Radcliffe than  Kasich and many more would vote for Harry Potter.

Banks pump billions into deforestation-linked firms in Southeast Asia, study claims | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Banks provided at least US$38 billion worth of commercial loans and underwriting facilities were provided to 50 companies in these sectors between 2010 and 2015
Kenneth Weene's insight:
If you need another reminder why corporations should not be considered people and why banks and other financial institutions need to be limited and controlled, then here you go. I guess these bankers figure that money is more important than anything so what the hell burn down the forests and rape the land. My take, the human capacity for greed and all its destructiveness is facilitated and amplified by unbridled corporations and banks.

Every book lover will want to visit these unusual libraries from around the world | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
For dedicated readers, all a library needs to be exciting are some well-stocked shelves of books. But as Denmark’s award-winning new “citizen space” shows, libraries can come in all kinds of creative and unusual forms. Here are eight libraries from around the world sure to intrigue bookworms. Why It's So Hard to Ignore a Baby's Cry, According to Science

Why It's So Hard to Ignore a Baby's Cry, According to Science | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
As is the case with any primal vocalisation, crying evolved to have a specific impact on listeners.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Hmm, this is one that got me thinking. How would the blood work of neonatal nurses differ from those working with older children? Would those squalling babies cause an increase in oxytocin levels by the end of the day that would transfer over into the rest of life with much caring or an exhaustion of the oxytocin production mechanism which would result in less bonding with others outside of work. How about that effect over time? Another related question: Do men with babies at home do less well at sports? Especially aggressive sports? That could be studied retroactively by looking at performance records as correlated to say football players' wives pregnancies. Anyway you cut it, the interplay of science and behavior fascinates me.

My Brother's Pregnancy and the Making of a New American Family

My Brother's Pregnancy and the Making of a New American Family | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
My brother Evan was born female. He came out as transgender 16 years ago but never stopped wanting to have a baby. This spring he gave birth to his first child
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Over the years I practiced as a psychologist, I worked with a number of transgender individuals. I've also read about some inter-sex people, people with a mix of both sexes' physical characteristic. However, this story blew me away. The obvious follow-up questions whiz through my head, i.e., what will this child be told and when, will he think of Evan's partner as Mom or Evan and if the partner how will that impact, and of course what will this ;title boy's sexual orientation and identity come to be. Along with those questions is another theme that overrides: how wonderful that science can help people live so much more in tune with how we see ourselves than could be done in the past.

The many ways design decisions treat people unequally.

As we make society more accepting and inclusive, we must also make sure that our designs meet those same goals, a world in which all people can be comfortable living and navigating. With that in mind, I found this article a meaningful read.

Clinton charity has top-notch finances, watchdog group says | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Charity Navigator has given the Clinton Foundation its highest rating, following criticism that foundation donors may have received special treatment from the former secretary of State.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
For all the political jeremiads about the Clinton Foundation, in the end as with most of the investigations of Hillary this independent look shows no wrong-doing. I may not like her, but I do find that the wailings of the right are ringing ever less true.

Suspicions Confirmed: Couple Faked Photographs in Everest Climb - The Boston Globe | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Nepalese authorities said the couple had doctored photographs submitted to the government in applying for a certificate of a successful climb
Kenneth Weene's insight:
All of us want to do noteworthy things, but we outgrow that impulse to lie about them. When I read about this couple, I think them pathetic. Learning to accept that we cannot all climb to the top of the world is part of growing up. For my part, I settle for an occasional flight of stairs or maybe finishing a new poem or story. Of course, when you visit my Amazon page and buy one of my books, that's more like—well not Everest but maybe climbing Bear Mountain back in Maine.

Kenneth Weene's insight:
As the chump of nativistic bigoted attacks on immigrants just left his marking stench here in Arizona, I thought I'd offer something in response, a bit of information that might make the world a kinder place. In my world, the vast majority of Hispanics work hard and contribute much. In my world, the vast majority of Blacks work hard and contribute with dignity. In my world, the great majority of Native Americans work hard and contribute with care for the environment. In my world, we should be proud to know  one another.

Kenneth Weene's insight:
An icon of my youth is disappearing. I loved HoJo's because it was the only place my mother would allow me to order a hotdog. If you've read "Memoirs From the Asylum," you'll understand that one—at least as well as I can. They had 28 favors of ice cream and special sauce for their hamburgers. It was fine dining back then. So, the Broody New Englander says, "Adieu," to yet another memory. That's all right; I'm a big boy now and can order hot dogs whenever I want.

Inside Detroit’s Radical Experiment to Save Its Public Schools

Inside Detroit’s Radical Experiment to Save Its Public Schools | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A new Michigan law may help stabilize the city's public school district—or signal its demise, as the student population declines
Kenneth Weene's insight:
It isn't just Detroit; most of America's big cities need educational remediation and rejuvenation. The biggest problems aren't financial, as much as those do count, but in designing an educational system that speaks to all kids and engages all families. That will probably mean using many styles of teaching and many sources of teachers. It will mean giving up the cookie-cutter approach to testing and replacing it with individualized goals for children. It will mean engaging parents by making the schools a part of community life not just a 1980 days-a-year custodian of our children. It also will require us making the reality of life in those cities more equitable and  providing real avenues to a good future for all the kids.

El Salvador allege bribe offer to fix World Cup qualifier with Canada

El Salvador allege bribe offer to fix World Cup qualifier with Canada | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
El Salvador’s national football team have alleged they refused a bribe to fix Tuesday’s World Cup 2018 qualifier against Canada. El Salvador have no chance of progressing in the qualification campaign but Canada need to win the match in Vancouver and hope Mexico defeat Honduras to stand a chance of making Russia in 2018. All four countries are members of CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football), whose former presidents Jack Warner and Jeffrey Webb were both arrested as part of the FIFA corruption case in 2015.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I'm not a big sports fan and certainly not a follower of El Salvadoran or Canadian soccer, but I am a supporter of integrity in sports and want to commend this team, which has no expectation of making it to the top competition but still chose to not only turn down bribes but also to let the world know about the offers. Goal El Salvador!

How many books did you read this summer?

How many books did you read this summer? | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

Remember how great it was when you learned to read your own chapter books; it still is that great.

Kenneth Weene's insight:
How many books did you read this summer? If you're like most people, you maybe read one and dipped into a couple of others. So many things to do; right? Of course, most of them didn't get done either. Here's a suggestion just for you, set aside some time every day to read. Make sure it's not too much time, but enough to relax and enjoy. Start with one good book and finish it before you jump to the next; no piles of books to waste your time rifling through. If you use an e-reader, same rule, one book at a time. I suggest starting with something short or perhaps an anthology so you can have a sense of success right off. And, of course, most importantly, make sure you read on of mine.

Tired of being humiliated, these girls fought the school dress code. And won.

Tired of being humiliated, these girls fought the school dress code. And won. | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Portland Public Schools' new policy could be a game-changer.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Young women are turned on my young men. Young men are turned on my young women. Those men want to show off their muscles and whatever else they think will make the women excited. Those girls will want to show off their breasts, legs, and whatever they think will make those men excited. That's all normal. It's also potentially a problem for schools. Separate schools, uniforms, dress codes: they are all intended to address the basic problem, but that problem is built in to our genes. Years ago Victorian (and Germanic) values tried to hide the reality that we are sexual animals. While the Prince of Wales screwed around and Victoria played Mrs. Brown and while Freud tried to tell his patients that they had imagined the abuse they had experienced, the world was changing. I think it great that a school board might come to that realization. In the end, if the girls and boys of that school system are going to grow into healthy, functional adults they will have to understand the worth of their own bodies, the responsibility for what they do with those bodies, and the right of those around them to have a similar sense of worth, dignity, and control.

The find, thought to be layers of sediment packed together by microbial communities living in shallow water, could alter our understanding of how life evolved.

As science unravels the mystery that is life on Earth, we have to exclaim in wonder at the possibilities of our distance ancestors, tiny moments of possibility emerging from the unyielding environment in the midst of chaos. Well done early stands of life. Well done indeed.

Trump reverts to his xenophobic self

Trump reverts to his xenophobic self | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
So much for trying to appear diplomatic.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I listened to Mr. Trump's speech and realized something that I think needs saying. If you raise the treble on your speakers and lower the bass and then close your eyes so his voice sounds more feminine and is disconnected from his apparently male person, this is the kind crap we would condemn condemn as shrill, emotional, irrational speech were it to come from a woman's mouth. And we would be right to label it such.

With that insight, I would suggest to you that this election is not about policies and judgement, it is about anger, the anger of white men about their declining influence in a society that is becoming more diverse and more feminized. The problem is that for many angry people, it's just fine if it is a man doing the ranting but it is not okay if it is a woman. Sorry, but that tells me something sad about us as a nation. Actually two things. First, the people who are so angry have little reason to be. Second, sexism is very much a part of the rancor towards Hillary.

If you listen to It Matters Radio this Sunday, we're going to be touching on the subject of how women are changing the way America works. We're also going to be discussing race from a different perspective, from the jury room.

Bachmann Says 'God Raised Up' Trump To Be GOP Nominee (VIDEO)

Bachmann Says 'God Raised Up' Trump To Be GOP Nominee (VIDEO) | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Former Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), who has been advising Donald Trump on foreign policy, said on Tuesday that God played a role in the real estate mogul becoming the Republican presidential nominee.

Laurie the Moose Lady Puts ‘Heart and Soul’ Into Roadkill

Laurie the Moose Lady Puts ‘Heart and Soul’ Into Roadkill | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Laurie Speakman and the Alaska Moose Federation have streamlined the harvesting of food from the roads. But increasingly, Alaskans aren’t following the rules.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Should the use of roadkill be up to a finder's keepers rule or should it be collected by an agency (NGO or state) for distribution to the needy? Or perhaps it should go to grocery stores. What do you think? We aren't talking that occasional opossum found on the roads of the south but those big critters like deer, elk, and moose that can provide a lot of meals. Here's one view from Alaska. For my part, I certainly prefer this lay's approach, but more than that I hope these many ungulates learn to cross on the green and not in-between.
