GOP New Mexico Secretary Of State Now Faces 65 Corruption Charges | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Dianna Duran, New Mexico's Republican secretary of state, was charged with identity theft on Friday, after previously being charged with 64 crimes related to fraud, embezzlement, and money laundering, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Duran (pictured above on the right) has been accused of using her campaign funds for personal expenses at casinos and jewelry stores. The latest criminal complaint from the New Mexico attorney general's office alleges that Duran forged the signature of a former stat
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Forget the politics and party affiliation. Obviously this woman is not functioning on all the cylinders. What is amazing is that she was elected and in office before her dysfunction was noticed. This goes to show how out of it American voters can be.

Indiana Representative Jud McMillin has resigned after his sex tape leaked without his consent. Earlier this year, he blocked the revenge-porn bill that would have made such a leak illegal.

The quote that says it all: "This is McMillin’s second time resigning an office over explicit photos of himself." So who is going to vote for this clown the next time around? Oh, yeah, the TEA party. Go TEA.

Nepal Mulls New Restrictions for Everest Climbing Permits

Nepal Mulls New Restrictions for Everest Climbing Permits | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Nepal is considering placing new age and fitness restrictions on people who want to climb Mount Everest, officials said Tuesday, as the country looks to enhance safety on the mountain after several disasters in recent years.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

More to the point, those who climb should pack out their debris and garbage. Recently I went to see the I-Max version of Everest and kept thinking, what self indulgent pigs. That 12 people ended up with their carcasses added to the crap covering the mountain only made my revulsion greater. I grew up camping and our one commandment was leave the place better than you found it. I'd sooner visit a dump site than add my crap to the mess that is on Everest.

Pope Francis Says Kim Davis Refusal To Issue Marriage Licenses Is 'A Right'

Pope Francis Says Kim Davis Refusal To Issue Marriage Licenses Is 'A Right' | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) — Pope Francis has defended his words of consolation to U.S. bishops over the priest sex abuse scandal but says — for the first time — that those who covered up for abusers are guilty of wrongdoing.

In a wide-ranging press conference en route to Rome from his first-ever visit to the United States, Francis also declared conscience objection a "human right," explained his love affair with American nuns and discussed his own star-power, which was fully on display during
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The sweet part is that this pope recognizes the individual as the true locus of religion rather than the institution. The sour side is that he didn't recognize that the individual right is set within the institutional framework. I respect Kim Davis's right to not issue marriage licenses to gay couples, but I don't recognize that right for a county clerk sworn to uphold the law. I might also recognize the right of an individual to choose to place the protection of a sex abuser above the right of the child to have his/her suffering addressed, but not the right of a cardinal of the church to protect an individual priest who has by such abuse violated the church's trust. Interestingly, the pope didn't recognize the right of individuals to use birth control, one area where there is no institutional framework. So on three issues, I think the pope had his miter up his a.., but he's still a decent guy and in my non-Catholic opinion way better than his predecessor.

Deep within a Norwegian hillside, thousands of US Marine Corps combat veterans await their next assignment.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

There is something incredibly not-reassuring about the idea of old military transports and weapons sitting around waiting to be used again. I can't say this is a bad idea, but somehow it seems both outdated (Can anyone say "Maginot Line?") and silly (why not use them in places like Afghanistan and put the new into storage so the best is available for rapid deployment, if you think such deployment will actually work?)

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — The Iranian president lauded his country's military as the most reliable force to take on "terrorists in the region," a reference to the extremist Islamic State group, in a speech during an annual military parade Tuesday.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While it is difficult to see any positive in armies and talk of military interventions, I am delighted to see that Iran may be opening to working with other states in the Middle East, even Sunni dominated states. Of course, Israel will be having conniptions, but from the larger world view, in my opinion this is very positive.

Palestinian flag raised at United Nations headquarters - BBC News | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
President Mahmoud Abbas warns he no longer feels bound by agreements with Israel, as the Palestinian flag is raised for the first time at the UN.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As I recall the statehood of Israel was established by a vote at the United Nations not by direct negotiations with the countries around it. Why should the Palestinian State have to negotiate with Israel for the right of statehood? Let there be two states already and perhaps they can actually learn to live together. It is certainly time for the Palestinians to recognize the reality of Israel and the Israelis to recognize the rights of Palestine.

Cow left in Asda by protesting farmer promoted to store manager | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A dairy cow which was left in an Asda supermarket in Middlesbrough last month has been put in charge of running the store, it has emerged. Daisy had been taken to the store by farmer Kevin Pritchard as part of a nationwide protest against falling milk prices but has proven to be the best placed candidate to run the store. ‘Kevin left me in the shop while he went off to talk to the local journos,’ said Daisy. ‘When there was a bit of an altercation he was manhandled off the premises, leaving me stranded in Aisle 6, Dairy, Eggs & Cheese. I felt a bit spare so when an old lady asked me if I knew which aisle the Steradent was kept in I took her round to Aisle 2, Toiletries & Feminine Hygiene, and it started from there.'

Native American boy pulled from class over Mohawk haircut

Native American boy pulled from class over Mohawk haircut | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
"It's a symbol of who we are," said the boy's father, who called it ironic that the Utah school is named Arrowhead.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I don't know about you, but I find this kid's smile very disruptive of my concentration. Seriously, as a school administrator you didn't know that Mohawk haircuts are a Native American tradition? Seriously, you think that after fifteen minutes the other kids in the class will be distracted by the neatly coiffed Mohawk? Let us consider the real issue behind this—no not cultural bias and bigotry—the growing propensity of schools to see themselves are enforcers of conformity. Don't get me wrong, I believe in community standards, but I also know that our country is based on individuality. Sadly, more and more we as a people search not for a process that balances those two goals but engage in bullying techniques to impose the one and rebellion to obtain the other. Law and order has become synonymous with imposition of compliance, and the schools have become allied with law enforcement rather than law exploration. This leaves the small number of people who opt for cultural diversity and freedom pulling their hair in frustration. The takeaway here is that the school administrators weren't even willing to accept the parents' statement that Jakobe's hairstyle was culturally correct but required a letter from an "authority." It seems to me that our "wars" in drugs, terror, and the like have become wars on ourselves and on our free and rational thinking, and the people of St. George, Utah, have some serious thinking to do about the underlying values of their town. Meanwhile, I will be smiling all morning in response to this kid's grin.
