Setting the Table for a Regal Butterfly Comeback, With Milkweed

Setting the Table for a Regal Butterfly Comeback, With Milkweed | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Conservationists have planted milkweed, a favored food of the butterfly, along migratory routes where natural habitat has been plowed under for crops.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

For many this may seem a small story, but for those gentle creatures who add such beauty to life and for us who love to watch them, it is significant. I understand that gardeners are at war with many bugs and insects, but we need those creatures as part of our habitat. Planting butterfly gardens and bee-friendly flowers are just two of the things we can and should be doing.

Republican State Gives Free Houses to Moochers, Cuts Homelessness by 74 Percent

Republican State Gives Free Houses to Moochers, Cuts Homelessness by 74 Percent | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Speaking of our coming congressional debates about food stamps and waste, I've been looking for a reason to share Kerry Drake's column about Utah's Housing First initiative. Eight years ago, under Gov.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

One of the reasons I thought Huntsman an outstanding potential president. This is the kind of creative, middle-of-the-road Republicanism I can support. Too bad the party has more in common with Duck Dynasty than with real statesmen.

Religion in America’s states and counties, in 6 maps

Religion in America’s states and counties, in 6 maps | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
With Christmas right around the corner, now seems as good a time as any to look at the state of religion in America's states and counties.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The extend and diversity of religious belief in the United States through interactive maps. Interestingly, those states with heavy concentration of Catholics tend to be more progressive than those that are heavily Southern Baptist. I wonder what John would have to say about that.

Get a clue, McDonald’s: Chain tells workers how much to tip their pool cleaners, dog walkers, and masseuses | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Corporate giant that told workers to go to church and return their presents has more tone-deaf advice to offer
Kenneth Weene's insight:

When their tone-deafness is pointed out, they take down the ridiculous material and blame it on a content provider. Gosh, does that mean they aren't really thinking about their workers, just going through the motions? I can't imagine their being that oblivious to the working people. (Yeah, sure.)

Jane Orient, a physician in Tucson, Ariz., says she's never accepted a dollar of third-party medical payments, whether from a government program or a private insurance company. She has a "philosophical and ethical" opposition to the U.S.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I have no problem with concierge medicine as long as the practitioners involved have repaid all the costs that the state and corporations have subsidized in their educations, as long as their self-pay patients make sure that hospitals and clinics are paid in full, etc. For most of us, our healthcare is based on a mutual assurance system.

2016 GOP hopefuls woo evangelicals by rushing to defend suspended reality-show star Phil Robertson.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

These guys remind me of a popular haircut from my youth, the ducks' ass look. Playing to your base is one thing, but pandering to their lowest biases is another, and over a guy from a reality show who likes Chia pets. Good Lord, how dumb can this get.

'Sister Wives' family wins ruling in bigamy suit

'Sister Wives' family wins ruling in bigamy suit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Judge rules that key parts of Utah's polygamy laws are unconstitutional.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I think this is a good decision as long as the legal benefits of marriage are not shared among multiple spouses. Were that the case, somebody could make quite an industry of getting married and reaping those rewards. Of course, polygamy or polyandry should only be by personal and free choice.

You're probably used to hearing bad news about our nation's health, but a new report indicates it's beginning to look up.

One thing I noted was that in some of the best states there was a lot of binge drinking. Also, noteworthy is that MA, home of the RomneyCare model now made national as ObamaCare and Vermont with its one payer system of health care are among the healthiest states.

Soccer. Beer. Philosophy. Solar Power. All categories in which Germany has historically dominated the United States. But the last of those, at least, may finally be changing.

What happens to whistle-blowers after the whistle is blown
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Since by its nature whistle-blowing involves revealing secrets, should there not be an independent process to decide if the secrets revealed are really a threat to the nation? IMHO the current administration tends to overreact to every leak. It is one reason I believe that Mr. Obama has been co-opted by the system.
