Episcopalians vote to allow gay marriage in churches

Episcopalians vote to allow gay marriage in churches | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Episcopalians voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to allow religious weddings for same-sex couples, solidifying the church's embrace of gay rights that began more than a decade ago with the pioneering…
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I am delighted for the couples whose lives are thus improved, I am amazed that the Episcopal Church considers marriage "gay", it tends to be such a somber faith. Then, let us consider what Henry  VIII would say, "We are not amused." As head of the Church of England, which is the mother church of Episcopalians, I hope that the Queen will give her personal imprimatur by allowing the royal corgis of both sexes to hump any leg they please. Okay, Ken, enough with the bad jokes.

Texas AG tells clerks they can flout Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage

Texas AG tells clerks they can flout Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

He said his office believed state religious freedom laws would allow clerks to refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples if they have sincerely held beliefs that prohibit them from doing so, and if there was someone else present - like a deputy - who would be willing to service the couple.

Judges and justices of the peace, however, should be able to refuse to marry these couples without finding an alternative, said Paxton, because there are others endowed with the ability to perform marriages, like members of the clergy.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

In other words, if you can find somebody to do what you don't want to, you can get away with not doing it. While this sounds reasonable on the surface, it implies that personal choice can decide the behavior of judges and government officials. I am sure a case will arise in which this is challenged and that the state of Texas will then be faced with wasting its taxpayers' money on defending a position that is at odds with the very notion of government.

God asked to move in less predictable ways | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
God, the creator of the universe and leader of the Roman Catholic Church, was today asked by worshippers from a variety of faiths to add a dash of mystery to the manner in which he goes about governing the forces of nature, responding to the prayers of his followers and guiding his emissaries on Earth.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Syped Him yesterday. Said he has hidden a magic tickets for a free tour of Heaven and Hell under the tops of eight Coke bottles. Winners will get a chance to write a "Book of Revelations" with one winner to be picked. That lucky winner gets a crucifixion and (drum role please) commitment to the Asylum of their choice.

At rural South Carolina shop, Confederate flags fly off shelves

At rural South Carolina shop, Confederate flags fly off shelves | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Store owner and customers cite Southern heritage and say the flag is not a racist symbol.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As one who would gladly ban all flags as remnants of a belief in war, I do not wish to take away the right of any idiot to wrap him/herself in any symbol of their choice, be it a Confederate Battle Flag, a Rainbow Coalition flag, or one decorated with dildos and anal plugs. For may part, I believe people should be free to tell the world who they are and in what they believe. Governments, on the other hand, require the consent of the governed, at last that is the myth here in America. So, for a state capitol to wrap itself in a flag is to take a political position in support of what that flag represents. I have no problem with the statehouse of South Carolina flying the stars and bars of a remembrance day—just as I had no problem with the White House being lit in rainbow lights to celebrate the recent SCOTUS decision—but that should be a one-off event. I don't want the rainbow lighting every day and I certainly think it equally offensive to have those stars and bars flying over a state house continuously. As for my neighbor who flies his American flag on his patio every day; I say God bless him. Were he to fly a Confederate flag, I would say the same. As a Yankee, I might greet them differently, "hello friend" versus a muttered "idiot," but they have a right to wrap themselves as they see fit.

Islamic State launches comparethejihad.com | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Islamic state hopes to help jihadists “find a way of waging war against the infidel that’s right for you” by launching a jihad comparison website, it was confirmed today. “There’s a huge confusing market, particularly in afterlife care,” said a spokesman. “Al Shabab in the Maghreb has instant paradise on a kill-as-you-go deal, whereas Al Qaeda in the Yemen is offering unlimited virgins on a 24 month contract. How do you decide?”

A New Federal Study Has Answers
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The good news is that alcohol seems to have much greater negative effect than marijuana. The bad news is that pot does have a negative effect on driving. The really bad news is that mixing alcohol and marijuana produces the greatest effect, and many partiers do both. The take-away, don't drive when you're high on anything because the life you save may be some innocent stranger, a good friend, a loved one, or even yourself.

Supreme Court sides with Fresno farmer in raisin dispute

Supreme Court sides with Fresno farmer in raisin dispute | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The Supreme Court has ruled for a California raisin grower and declared it was unconstitutional for a government-backed agricultural board to claim control of about one-third of his crop.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What was a valid reason at the time of the Great Depression is certainly no longer valid. I'm glad the court struck down something so outmoded, and as a raisin lover I hope this will lower the cost of my treat. The real lesson here is that laws made for the best of reasons may need revision and even removal. We must remember that the government bureaucracy will always tend to keep itself from giving up one iota of its roles and powers. The real question is why this issue wasn't addressed years ago by congress. Perhaps there should be a House committee for reconsideration of existing legislation to constantly reconsider such anachronistic laws.

Rand Paul’s ridiculous story of an elderly man imprisoned for ‘dirt on his land’

Paul’s storytelling of government gone amok has run wild on its own.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What this country doesn't need is another conservative politician making up stories, especially when the victims in their versions are businessmen who ignore the law and the villains are often those most in need of our support such as people on welfare. And yes, I know, we don't need the liberals making us stuff either.

"No, this map does not mean that Louisianans are dropping left and right of syphilitic infections or that the police are executing tons of people in New Mexico and Nevada. But it does mean that you are more likely to die of those causes in those states than elsewhere. The authors write that the map shows a "variety of distinctive causes of death based on a wide range of number of deaths, from 15,000 deaths from HIV in Florida to 679 deaths from tuberculosis in Texas to 22 deaths from syphilis in Louisiana."

I am upset, but I also appreciate the joy that America can feel at this moment because we are capable of healing and because we have a president who can speak to our hearts and to the best of what we are. So I share this under the heading Enjoy Yourself and hope that as you read this story you will, as I have done, appreciate that the journey is not done, that we have a long way to go, but at least we are on the way.

Cameron wins Greece in EU negotiation | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A rather quizzical British Prime Minister left the Brussels summit last night arm in arm with an equally confused Greek PM, Alexis Tsipras. Having promised to leave the talks with an improved deal for the UK, a sheepish Mr. Cameron emerged from the proceedings as the proud new owner of a bankrupt Greek economy, seven cans of old paint and a four pack of AA batteries ‘with two missing’.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Meanwhile, the United States is the proud new sponsor of an ISIS Demolition Derby Team and is in contention for a chunk of the Gaza Strip that has been reduced to rubble. All prizes must be claimed or they will be delivered by Amazon drone; the original delivery contract was with the CIA, but they seem incapable of the task.

Last decade, they didn't like the United States and wanted us out of Iraq. Both are reversed now.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The world sees us more favorably because of Mr. Obama's policies; so what is wrong with the American people that we can't appreciate his efforts to make our nation more rational and less the crazed state-builder? For my part, I wish we would do more to build connection to other power-states and do even less to try to control the world's events.
