‘Grand Designs’ house constructed entirely out of forgotten Christmas puddings | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
In one of the most ambitious self-building projects to date 'Grand Designs' presenter Kevin McCloud has revealed the first house to be constructed entirely out of forgotten Christmas puddings. When Devonshire couple, Tom and Felicity Holmes realised that they could never afford to build their dream house out of traditional materials they were forced to think outside of the box. So, when Felicity discovered 17 years’ worth of unused Christmas puddings in the back of her mother’s kitchen cupboard, she experienced a true ‘Eureka’ moment.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

For my American friends just think fruitcakes instead of Christmas puddings.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Many parents have stopped letting their kids play with toy guns, and for good reasons. Now, what about those dolls? This is a great article about Barbie versus reality. My poetic take on Barbie: Sprung full boobed / ready role model / for a generation / willing to die / of self-starvation / for flatter stomachs / and thinner thighs.  (Wrote that back in 1995)

New hunters emerge after national decline

New hunters emerge after national decline | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

A decades-long national decline in the number of hunters has prompted states to tap into a new group of hunters - people who demand locally produced food, but don't know the first thing about bagging a deer.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

I am an advocate of responsible hunting. In many instances humans have become the major predator for deer which would otherwise overrun. The big problem is making sure that the best breeding stock is not the most frequently killed.

A vast and diverse group, by the numbers.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Just who are these undocumented immigrants Mr. Obama is talking about? Well, for one thing many of them are Asian, they are young. For another they make up a significant portion of our work force. For a third, they have many children. Oh, and the President who was most derelict in protecting our borders (as measured by when undocumented immigrants came to the States): Mr. Bush. Yeah, that guy.

HIV drugs show promise in treating common eye disease

HIV drugs show promise in treating common eye disease | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A class of drugs used for three decades by people infected with the virus that causes AIDS may be effective in treating a leading cause of blindness among the elderly. HIV drugs called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), including AZT and three others, blocked age-related macular degeneration in mice and worked well in experiments involving human retinal cells in the laboratory, researchers said on Thursday. In HIV-infected people, NRTIs blo

O'Reilly To Undocumented Journalist: 'You Don't Deserve To Be Here' (VIDEO)

O'Reilly To Undocumented Journalist: 'You Don't Deserve To Be Here' (VIDEO) | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
While discussing President Obama's executive actions on immigration Thursday night, Fox News host Bill O'Reilly told journalist and activist Jose Antonio Vargas that he and other undocumented immigrants "don't deserve to be here."
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This exchange is possibly the best expression of the two sides I have found. One is a man sitting on his sense of entitlement and not understanding that the other has no such sense only a reality of where he has lived and where he loves. The other, full of respect and talent, trying to explain that life is not always fair to people but certainly not trying to defend actions that might not have been right, that certainly were not according to law, but which in many cases represented either desperation or simply (as in his case) being a child whose parents made a decision. Personally, I would prefer to have people like O'Reilly leave and have Vargas stay. But of course, I'm a bleeding heart when it comes to people with heart.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

I find the women who fall in love with "bad boys" to be fascinating. It is a clinical study I always wanted to do, but never followed up on. Is it a fantasy of saving and redeeming, of sharing the impulsive and destructive behavior, or just a projection of some kind of special sexual powers? My hypothesis is that it's the latter. I did have a client once who fell in love with a mafioso because his she was turned on by the feel of his gun when they danced. Now that was a disaster.

They Had Been Getting Away With Killing Teenage Boys For Years. Then August 9 Happened. | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Things that matter. Pass 'em on.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is the real story behind Ferguson, a continuing story of police violence towards young black men. There are some who will say that's because young black men are more dangerous and more prone to crime than young white men. There are others who will say it's because society offers fewer opportunities for blacks and drives them to live in higher-crime neighborhoods. Both may be partly true, but I think a lot of it has to do with the unleashing of violence in our society, and such violence will always flow from the majority towards the minority. In the long run this will split us apart, so we'd better start controlling violence. One place to start, end the war on drugs which fuels much of the crime. Another, stop glorifying guns. A third, get us as a nation refocused on community by doing more positive community activities — yes, as a government function. Four, cut back on the glorification of violence, especially in the way we celebrate sports and sports rivalries.

Israeli Cabinet Passes 'Nationality Law'

Israeli Cabinet Passes 'Nationality Law' | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Controversial legislation has set off a vexed debate about Israel's future
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In my opinion, this is a bad law designed to arouse anger and outrage so that the Israeli government can go on with its attack on Arab homes and communities. Certainly Israel is a place of refuge for Jews and has an historic connection to the Jewish faith and people. But it is also the home of others and certainly has deep religious significance to others. Perhaps it is time for Israel to learn something from Canada or Belgium, countries in which ethnic difference could be a cause for dismemberment but countries in which a sense of the greater togetherness has been the norm.

2 innocent men freed after 39 years in prison

2 innocent men freed after 39 years in prison | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
CLEVELAND — After 39 years behind bars for a 1975 murder they didn't commit, two men were released from prison Friday. Ricky Jackson, 57, and Wiley Bridgeman, 60, were both released at separate court hearings.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

So how will Cleveland and the state of Ohio now take care of these men? Clearly, they can not give them those years back. Clearly, they can not give them the wives and children they may have had around them. Clearly, they can not give them the memories of wonderful days, of a child's birth, or anything. Will they at least make sure these three men (because there is a third who was freed earlier) don't have to worry about surviving, about having a job, about eking out a living with no skills and not resume? Will they at least make sure that these three men can have decent homes, cars, clothes, food? And will there be any repercussions against the now retired police officers who perpetrated this lie to clear a case and get that credit?

The Republican-led House panel’s findings after a two-year probe conclude that the CIA and the military responded appropriately to the deadly attacks on U.S. facilities in Libya in 2012.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

So after all the whoop and holler, bottom line is it was a tragic event but not a source of culpability. Now here's the real question, why did the Republicans make such a big deal out of it when I knew what the conclusions were going to be very soon after the events? Perhaps there should be an investigation into the political motives of investigations.

No, Your Ancestors Didn’t Come Here Legally

No, Your Ancestors Didn’t Come Here Legally | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
I guarantee you’ll hear the phrase “My ancestors came here legally” in the aftermath of President Obama’s immigration address. It’s almost impossible to find any conversation about immigration—between elected officials, pundits, online commenters—in which at least one participant doesn’t use the phrase. It’s an understandable position, through which the speaker can both defend his or her family history and critique current illegal immigrants who choose to do things differently. It helps deflect
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Before you talk about illegal aliens  you really should read this article. Most of our ancestors came to this country not legally but simply came. There were no laws about it, so they weren't legal or illegal. So let's keep perspective on what we are saying.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

For those, like myself, who consider Gracia Lorca's "Yerma" to be one of the great plays of all drama, this story evokes a challenge: to write a play that captures the humanity and pain of a woman faced not with her own barrenness but with the absence of a suitable mate and/or opportunity. What does having a child mean?

Firestorm Erupts in Anti-Smoking Massachusetts Town | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Residents of Westminster object to becoming the first in the country to ban the sale of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The question of prohibition raised once again. What is it in our country, don't we get it yet? We shouldn't be prohibiting the rights of individuals unless they directly impact the well-being of others. My belief: From the right or the left, prohibition is wrong. Smoke just not around others. Drink your Big Gulp. Go to the bar, but don't drive afterwards. Buy a gun, but not if you can't use it without harming people. Have an abortion if you must. Light up that joint, but recognize it might have neurological consequences We have as a society the right and obligation to try to educate you, to explain why your smoking is self-harmful, why drinking that soda is the same, why that abortion is (in our view) morally wrong, how to handle that gun, what addiction is. BUT we must not presume the right to impose our views on your individual behavior if it doesn't directly affect others. Prohibition was wrong when it was about drinking, and it is still the wrong approach for America. What is great is that the people of this small town in Massachusetts are ready to fight for individual liberty. That is the ultimate American value.
