The Role of a Dictionary

The Role of a Dictionary | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Good writing may exceed the boundaries suggested, if not intended, by dictionary definitions.

Pedantry never won a pulitzer or told a good story.

Sharla Shults's curator insight, May 19, 2013 3:02 PM

What a dictionary is for is rarely what a writer needs: basic help in using individual words. Of course, when a writer needs such help it is critical that he or she gets it. Only it should be kept in mind that good writing may exceed the boundaries suggested, if not intended, by dictionary definitions. As one lexicographer put it, “Nothing worth writing is written from a dictionary.”

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Nothing speaks of Freud more than the sexism of traditional religion. If god is nothing more than the end of an Oedipal drama, we don't need religion. If we believe that god exists, then we should see god's working in the evolution of social thinking and culture. Jewish, Catholic, Muslim: no matter what the faith, there should be gender equality and acceptance of all or recognition that you don't actually believe in a creator.

Fuck Facebook! Right-wing politics, social media & the death of free speech | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
American Vernacular takes aim at the hypocrisy of Facebook and its less-than-rightful owner, Mark Zuckerberg, the company's support of right-wing social and political agendas, its insiduous suppression of 1st amendment rights according to its code of decency and outsourced content control, and why Facebook has become the most sophisticated weapon for the killing free speech and expression in American politics while dismantling the fundamental ideals of the US Constitution. Why I visit prostitutes

Why I visit prostitutes | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Just as sex workers are shamed by society, so are the clients who see them. It's time to tell my side of the story
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Personally, I have never paid for sex (or love), but I know people who have. As a shrink, I also knew a few women who were in the life even though they did not need to be; it was more for their own pleasure and excitement. I have often wondered why a society like ours in which almost everything is about money is so resistant to the sale of sex. Sex, drugs, or once alcohol: making activities illegal only makes it go into hiding and thereby make it harder for all who want to be involved. So, yes, I think prostitution should be legal with good medical supervision and the right of the women (and men who ply the trade) to organize themselves as part of the community. What do you think?

Proper hydration is important for health and survival, but when you are lost in the desert, you are probably better off hunkering down and waiting for help. Every drop of sweat is a loss to your body, and finding actually potable moisture is a chimera.

By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In July 1965, two gigantic fossilized dinosaur arms replete with menacing claws were unearthed in the remote southern Gobi desert of Mongolia. But nearly everything else was missing, leaving experts baffled about the nature of this beast with the behemoth arms. Half a century later, the mystery has been solved. ...

America’s Most Important (and Wackiest) Referendums This November

America’s Most Important (and Wackiest) Referendums This November | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Should Mainers be allowed to hunt bears with doughnuts? Will Washington gun laws get both tougher and laxer? These and other key questions will be on ballots across the U.S. next month.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I find that few voters bother to actually read and discuss referendums. They are important. Remember that Prohibition, that disaster of American prudishness, started through state referendums and swelled into a national constitutional amendment. I am always fearful of those who would make absolute rights and wrongs into constitutional mandates, be it at the state or the federal level. Oh, and I say give the bears the donuts laced with contraceptives. This bear always preferred jelly.

Church should not fear change, pope says at synod close

Church should not fear change, pope says at synod close | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis has closed an assembly of Catholic bishops that revealed deep divisions on how to respond to homosexuality and divorce, saying on Sunday the Church should not be afraid
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Can this good and caring man slowly shift the course of the hidebound Church; or will the old men, the conservative bishops who cannot see humanity through the veil of church power stand in his way? Even as church-based religion becomes less important in the "Western World," replaced as it were by spirituality and personal faith, still I think Francis is trying to make Catholicism once again relevant. I give him credit for the effort even as I laugh at the ceremony.

Brittany Maynard’s brave choice: Why religious arguments against physician-assisted suicide fall flat | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A woman with terminal brain cancer is choosing to end her life on Nov. 1 — and that's her right
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I raise my voice in support of this woman's right to end her suffering and to die with dignity. Only four states Washington, Oregon, Montana and New Mexico allow physician-assisted suicide. Hopefully that group will grow. As to the religious issue, besides that being rightfully up to the individual, I would point out that God, if such exists, has given her the need, a terminal illness filled with suffering and degradation, and the means; so why should we assume that God opposes this woman's right?

When I looked up, all these people had risen from their seats. Some were wearing bandanas, and an accountant from Preston was stripping to the waist and smearing camouflage paint on his cheeks. They didn't make a sound, just used hand signals like in films.'
