Ava DuVernay's Oscar-nominated documentary is a must-see. But what comes next?
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This is a Netflix film that I'm planning to watch. I know it will get me angry and I hope it will stir up others as well. There is no question that we have used the criminal justice system to perpetuate discrimination, and it's time for Americans to stop fooling ourselves and make the world different.

St. Louis Muslims Raise More Than $60,000 to Repair Jewish Cemetery Damaged by Vandals

St. Louis Muslims Raise More Than $60,000 to Repair Jewish Cemetery Damaged by Vandals | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

I thought we should all be reminded of what some of our "evil" Muslim neighbors are doing. How dare they try to help restore cemeteries that goonish white Christian Americans have vandalized? Sure the vandals are small in number, but let's not lose sight of who they are.

Kenneth Weene's insight:
Every now and again people in the US take action agains the evil around them. Such times make me happier and prouder to be an American. In this case, I celebrate the decency of the Muslim community of St. Louis and hope this story will give pause to those who are so quick to think that Islam is inherently anti-American values.

So Long, Thimble: Hasbro Axes Classic Monopoly Token

So Long, Thimble: Hasbro Axes Classic Monopoly Token | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Like most boys, I never wanted to be the thimble (or the iron which was removed a few years back) and always went for the race car and the dog first. What were your favorite tokens? I see that there is now a cat, which we didn't have back in the dark ages. What would you like the replacement for the thimble to be? My choice is an iPhone, but it should come with some great apps, like a free-pass at Boardwalk.

Sid the Science Kid is in big trouble.

On behalf of Muppets and preschoolers everywhere, this has to be shared. It would be funny as hell were this man not actually in a political office and blatantly unwilling to do his job competently.

Back in the day, love was a dangerous game.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Am I the only one who is creeped out by Valentine's Day? There's something threatening about the whole idea of declaring infatuation and expecting a response. Stalkers anyone? But these cards add a whole new dimension, kind of like adding weird clowns to the mix.

Many Apply, Few Qualify: Canada Rejects Indian Status for Thousands

Many Apply, Few Qualify: Canada Rejects Indian Status for Thousands | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Canada has rejected more than 72,000 applications from people seeking Indian status, the latest turn in a chaotic process to decide who in Newfoundland qualifies as a Native Canadian.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
There has come a time when those who once hid their connection to the Original People of this continent are now not only proud of their ancestry but others wish to claim it as well. So, who is Native American and who is not? This will not be an easily decided question for the people of Newfoundland. At least we know that the process will be civil and mannerly.

Pip, Pip! Hooray.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
It may not be so great to be the queen, at least not any longer. On the other hand, she has managed to reign without having one of her relatives lead a revolt, not a worthy usurper in the lot. I wonder if Chrales will ever get to wear the crown? Probably not. Poor chap.

Obviously, where we live affects the quality of our lives. Sorry, you'll have to got to the article to actually find out how your state ranks unless you live in Arizona with me. We're number 8, but of course that dies;t include the arts, which are important to me. For fans of Broody New Englander, Maine is 4, but it's a bit chilly this time of year.

Did Custer Have a Cheyenne Mistress and Son? Native Oral History Says Yes - Indian Country Media Network

Did Custer Have a Cheyenne Mistress and Son? Native Oral History Says Yes - Indian Country Media Network | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Recorded Native oral history has several sources that say George Armstrong Custer had a son named Yellow Swallow with a Cheyenne woman named Meotzi.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
If I weren't currently working on a novel set in the nineteenth century and bridging the world of the Native Americans and the White Men, this is a story that would get me writing. I wonder if there are any Indians who know more about this, perhaps somebody with some idea of what happened to Yellow Swallow. I would love to know there great of the tale.

All in the rind: how to taste cheese like a master

All in the rind: how to taste cheese like a master | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
I am marvelling at a colour-coded tasting chart filled with words to describe flavours at which even wine critic and queen of the flowery adjective, Jilly Goolden, might raise an eyebrow in surprise.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I'm a turophile, that's somebody who loves cheese, as in love, love, love. As in show me to the fromagerie and watch me eat. As in cow, goat, buffalo, and sheep. As in smelly, sharp, and well you get the idea. If you love cutting the cheese—no, not that way kids—you'll enjoy this article as much as I did. Meanwhile, there's a wedge of Brie calling my name.
