The Dark Secret Of The Only Car To Appear On American Paper Money

The Dark Secret Of The Only Car To Appear On American Paper Money | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The government would love to keep you from knowing any of this. If they had it their way, Jalopnik would be shut down and I'd be thrown into one of the secret gulags the Department of  the Treasury operates inside Roosevelt's nostrils on Mt.Rushmore.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I always knew the folks from Parker Brothers had a hand in creating American currency. This is a just for fun knowledge post.

Snooty was born in captivity in Miami in 1948 and got a very special birthday cake on Saturday.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Always celebrate a Manatee. I invited Snotty to join us on It Matters Radio, but he was scared of Punky the Cat, who'd have thought that manatee were ailurophobic?

The Slave Who Stole the Confederate Codes—and a Rebel Warship | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
When three Confederate officers decided to go ashore for a night in Charleston, they left their gunboat in the hands of an enslaved pilot. It was a critical mistake.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Of course, if you listen to It Matters Radio, you already know about Robert Smalls because we interviewed author Patrick Abridge, author of Steering to Freedom. Why does It Matter? Because we try to find the best topics and guests.

The Man Who Spent 30 Years in the Rainforest Preserving the Music of the Bayaka | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Louis Sarno went to record the music of the Central African Republic's Bayaka community in the 80s and never turned back.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
As the world spins, the Baraka of the Central African Republic are hardly important players, but their musical traditions are unique and the story of their preservation is amazing. Be sure to listen to some of the Soundcloud connections in the article.

From the woman who lived as a man for over 50 years to practice medicine to the female jazz musician who found fame as a man, meet nine women who passed as males.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Of course they missed Charley Parkhurst, the stagecoach driver, whose story is fictionalized by my friend Karen Kondazian in a great novel, The Whip. Still, this is a fascinating list of women who chose for one reason or another to take on the role of a man.

Top Saudi clerical body renews fatwa against Pokemon

Top Saudi clerical body renews fatwa against Pokemon | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Saudi Arabia's top clerical body has renewed a 15-year-old edict that the Pokemon game franchise is un-Islamic, Saudi media said on Wednesday, although the fatwa made no mention of the successful new Pokemon GO mobile game.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
While I have no interest in searching for fictional characters, especially silly-looking ones, I think it great that people have been energized enough to actually get off their couches and go on a treasure hunt. I think one of the saddest things about Islam as it is practiced in much of the world is its comparative lack of tolerance for silliness. We should not put away childish things but revel in them. So I say to those who want to play Pokemon GO, have fun but don't be too much of a nuisance.

Over the span of his career, project after project has produced allegations of bad faith, broken promises, blatant lies or outright fraud.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
If you don't get it that the Donald is a theatre piece and not a leader, I suggest you read this article. Be sure you get to the end, because I honestly can't remember meeting Mr. Trump, but I do remember a guy with orange hair at the sideshow.

The most thorough, profound and moving defense of Hillary Clinton I have ever seen. | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
First of all — this is not my writing.  It's a Facebook post by someone I don’t even know, a man named Michael Arnovitz in Portland OR.  But as a Facebook post it passes the fair use test and I’m quite certain he would not object that I share i
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I will iterate, I don't much care for Hillary Clinton. I find her lacking in the quality I call grace and I don't think she is empathic towards others. I also question her health, that endless cough worries me as does her bloated appearance. Still, I think she deserves a fair hearing, and this piece is one of the best defenses of her that I have read.

Gaspar Marcos stepped off the 720 bus into early-morning darkness in MacArthur Park after the end of an eight-hour shift of scrubbing dishes in a Westwood
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Gaspar is the kind of immigrant we need in this country. Let's forget the application process and focus on the individual. If he is willing to work this hard to get an education, imagine how hard he will work to make his new home and country serve once again as a beacon to the world. As for the school's principal, Kristen McGregor, I can only say, "WOW!" Now there is an educator who is trying to make a difference.

Did a Fear of Slave Revolts Drive American Independence?

Did a Fear of Slave Revolts Drive American Independence? | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
To the founders, separation from Britain was about racial fear and exclusion as much as it was about inalienable rights.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Of course, if you are a regular listener to It Matters Radio, you already know about the racist roots of the American revolution. In fact, if you are a regular reader of my posts, you may know that two of the major causes of the "founding fathers" were stealing land from the Native Americans and making sure that Black people stayed in chains. What's more they wanted this all done at the expense of the crown—no taxes on us Americans. Maybe it's time to rethink the glory of our revolution and put it in perspective so that we can go forward.

My brother loves politics. But he thought his disability meant he couldn’t vote. | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Too many Americans are still left out at the ballot box because of accessibility issues.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
No, I'm not naive. I know that our votes usually have little to do with what happens in this country. I know that politicians have become a class unto themselves who are in bed with lobbyists and the rich. I know that for all the differences in platforms, the two major parties are more like one.Still, I consider voting a sacred act, one that I personally exercise every election, general or special, and primary. When I've changed residences, one of mu first acts has always been to register. I guess that's why I thought this heartwarming story something I should share. I hope it encourages everyone who reads it to vote. Maybe if we all raise our voices in this manner, it can make a difference.

Dying is hard. Death doulas want to help make it easier. | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A new army of volunteers and professionals works quietly to assist the passage out of life.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
When I was a child, death was a taboo topic and dying was considered an unacceptable if universal act. It was something not to be talked about except when absolutely necessary, kind of like defecation.Slowly, we are moving to a more loving and accepting view of death, especially through hospice. Many of us, including me, believe that physician assisted suicide in a human right. Death Doulas help those who are dying to accept the process, and that makes them true heroes. In the end this is article is a great celebration of the human soul both in individuals and its expression as a common force  in us all.

The ventral medial prefrontal cortex part of the brain shows greater flexibility in people who cope better with stress, finds a new study
Kenneth Weene's insight:
At the same time, people with more flexibility in that region are also more likely to use food and drinking as ways to reestablish comfort levels. In other words, this is the area of the brain that says "I must be comfortable no matter what the hell is going on." Reminds me of some politicians. Heck, it also sounds like me.

Inside Gaza's traditional tribal courts

Inside Gaza's traditional tribal courts | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Known for their efficiency and simple procedures compared to the official judiciary, tribal courts hold a significant position among Palestinian families in the Gaza Strip who resort to them to resolve their disputes.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I love the idea that instead of a jury, these tribal courts identify conciliators to bring the parties together. Of course, I notice that there is no method for finding that no offense was committed. Therein lies a great secret of tribal life, that people are expected to avoid making false or frivolous claims of damage; unlike our court system in which lawyers work hard to gin up business.

Is South Korea Regressing Into a Dictatorship?

Is South Korea Regressing Into a Dictatorship? « | Foreign Policy | the Global Magazine of News and Ideas
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I find it unsettling to once again see South Korea slip towards an authoritarian government. The "police action" in Korea was the price paid by American and other soldiers to keep South Korea free. It was the opportunity that allowed the growth of a vibrant economy and a nation of many strengths and fascinating culture while the dictatorship to its north has produced stagnation and slavery. Hopefully, America and other countries will pressure President Park to move back towards freedom. If she really thinks that there will be a people among her people for rule from Pyongyang, then perhaps she should not only resign but also get medical assistance.

This is a strong finding to support the legalization of medical marijuana and suggests that we take a hard look at the role of big pharma in our nation's political discourse. Could it be that the drug companies are more interested in profits than in our health.
