Homeschooling expert: Sex-ed is a liberal plot — make kids watch guinea pigs do it instead

Homeschooling expert: Sex-ed is a liberal plot — make kids watch guinea pigs do it instead | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

"A conservative activist, who has been billed as a homeschooling expertby tea party groups, warned over the weekend that sex-ed courses were a plot to increase the number of Democratic voters by destroying marriages."

Kenneth Weene's insight:

She has it backwards. Since the absence of sex education leads to more out of wedlock children, it is her approach that will assuredly produce more Democratic voters. Nope, that doesn't make sense either since what has marital status got to do with voting? Bottom line, this is the kind of cuckoo think that keeps me watching the far right. Why pay to go to comedy clubs when I can just listen to them?

This Is the Story of the Hamburger

This Is the Story of the Hamburger | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Its rise from a lowly patty of the chopped meat to the aristocracy of foods; its charismatic and delicious descendants; the arguments it inspires — over ethics and blends and tastes; and Silicon
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I love a good burger, but they aren't easy to find. Blah burgers abound in a world of fast food joints that are all about cheap. But a really good hamburger is a joy. A nice mix of meats with not too much fat. Medium rare. Forget the bun and make the cheese blue. Tomatoes are fine, but I can do without lettuce except as a bed for this treat. A roasted poblano between cheese and meat is fine. Serve with slaw or fruit. What time do you want me to drop by?

Aided by the Sea, Israel Overcomes an Old Foe: Drought | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A major national effort to desalinate Mediterranean seawater and to recycle wastewater has provided the country with enough water for all its needs.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Can the United States learn to use water wisely? Do we have the national will and pride necessary to work on any problem with the determination and perseverance that is required? National determination to survive and prosper is the bedrock of Israeli politics and makes this kind of success in the face of a great challenge possible.

How Your Favorite Fast Food Meals Are Changing

How Your Favorite Fast Food Meals Are Changing | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Chains from Taco Bell to Pizza Hut are throwing out the additives and embracing the natural ingredients
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Since I don't eat fast food, this is not terribly important to me personally; but I think it represents a change in the way we think about our food. My question is will this be a fast enough and big enough change to save our food supply from companies like Monsanto that claim they are providing us with the best GMOs and chemicals. It bothers me that many who oppose big-brother government are willing to trust big-brother corporatism.

Modi’s Radical Plan to Remake Welfare in India

Modi’s Radical Plan to Remake Welfare in India | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The government says it’s taking “incremental” steps toward reform, but the plan to reshape payouts for the poor is nothing short of a revolution.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As in the United States, the best way to help many, perhaps most poor is to give them money for the short term and training so they can earn on their own for the long term. However, there will always be those who need more supervision and protection because of their limitations and there will always be those who will take advantage and deceive. While it is certainly time for the government of India to end the feudalistic largesse programs of the past, it is folly to believe that the dependency of many can be ended so simply. The great contribution of Congress was to stabilize the country after independence and to develop great higher education. However, giving grain and sugar to the people only could go so far. India is becoming a major power and the poor must be allowed a chance to rise with the tide. Good luck to the people of this great country.

After a Political Reversal in Alberta, ‘Anything Seems Possible’ | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
With national elections expected in the fall, a sweeping victory this month by the left-leaning New Democrats in Alberta, a bastion of conservative voting, may signal changes to come.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Even our most conservative Canadian neighbors are beginning to get it; conservatives don't provide good, effective government and don't help real economic growth. Now if the folks of Alberta have learned that, perhaps people in places like Kansas will get the message, too.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Fascinating how quickly our understanding of brain function is growing. As a psychologist I love this kind of research. Of course, what is interesting to me when reading this report is that the stimulus, the specific room in which a shock was administered, wasn't needed to elicit the response, freezing, which suggests that the memories of stimuli and the responses to which they are connected may be stored separately.

Fifty Authors from Fifty States: Beans and Cod by Kenneth Weene

Fifty Authors from Fifty States: Beans and Cod by Kenneth Weene | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

“You’re going to boarding school,” my father proclaimed. It was December 1954. I was thirteen, in ninth grade and not really ready for this dramatic announcement. I was not, however, completely surprised. My father didn’t like me; that had been amply demonstrated the summer before. I could not forgive his rages and my multiple humiliations. From everything he said, it was obvious he could not remember any of those horrible episodes. Any references to the summer’s events met a look of incomprehension.

One of earliest known copies of Ten Commandments sees the light of day

One of earliest known copies of Ten Commandments sees the light of day | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The fragile, 2,000-year-old fragment of the Dead Sea Scrolls will make a brief appearance in Jerusalem.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is interesting to me that the only quoted commandment given in the article is actually not the same as our modern Biblical version. "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you." is how we receive it but it says "so you will have a long and healthy life", a small but significant difference. One establishes the primacy of Israel as a political entity and the other the primacy of life as God's gift. One can only wonder at when and why this divergence took place. Was this a political statement by the people making this particular copy, or did other scribes change the text as response to the diaspora?
