What Pygmies Can Teach Us About Childrearing

What Pygmies Can Teach Us About Childrearing | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Why do we push our young ones while asking little of our older kids?
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Taking better care of small children and being less indulgent of teens might be a better course of child rearing. Interesting read.

Narelle McMahon's curator insight, May 31, 11:59 PM

I find child rearing one of the hardest things what to do what not to do.  Am I doing it wrong? what sort of child am I rearing ?  What sort of adult will they be?  Trying to make sure the are grounded and have a good idea about what people are and can be and they are not too materialistic.

Pagan High Priest Finds Few Believers Inside an Arkansas City Hall

Pagan High Priest Finds Few Believers Inside an Arkansas City Hall | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Bertram Dahl, a self-described high priest of Paganism, and the city of Beebe in Arkansas have clashed over Mr. Dahl’s dream of opening a Pagan temple next to his house.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I have no measure of the sincerity of Mr. Dahl's believes, but my guess is that he is either looking to be a martyr for religious freedom or he lacks the sense god gave geese. Just what was he expecting in a town like that and right across from a Pentecostal church. Somehow, I don't see this ending well. Meanwhile, the people of Beebe are obviously making fools of themselves. Why do they care? Just how big a congregation of pagans do they think will suddenly appear in their "god fearing" community? If they let him build his temple, he'll go broke. At least this time religion is breeding farce instead of war.

Marijuana poses more risks than many realize | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Doctors say they're increasingly fielding questions about the safety of marijuana, as use of the drug rises and more communities consider legalizing it. Here's what we know and don't know about health effects.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Now the educational work about marijuana begins. It's really fairly simple: don't use too much, be aware and don't let yourself become dependent on it, don't give it to kids. Being legal doesn't mean the same as it's safe anymore than alcohol or tobacco or even caffeine are necessarily safe.

Study: Kids on screen-time diet lost weight, performed better in school

Study: Kids on screen-time diet lost weight, performed better in school | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Research suggests parental monitoring of media consumption can have a lasting effect on a child's development
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I certainly think this study tells us something important, I wonder how much of the effect was due to getting the kids away from those ubiquitous screens and how much was due to the greater amount of parent-child interaction that resulted or the simple fact that the parents were showing some interest and concern. I must admit that I am always torn when we go out to eat and see kids with their pads. Part of me applauds the lovely quiet. Part of me wants to yell at the parents, "Why don't you interact with your children?"

Nur Afifah Binte Mohamed Rahim's curator insight, July 21, 12:37 PM

Parents used to think that they cannot control children and technology. However, parents do have power and this is demonstrated in this article. Weight loss can be determined with the amount of technology we use. Additionally, the more time we use on technology, the more the weight gain! This could be due to the inactivity while we are on our devices thus not doing anything. Thus this article further reiterates the point on healthy lifestyle, especially so about inculcating certain healthy habits starting young.

Octopus mom protects her eggs for an astonishing 4-1/2 years

Octopus mom protects her eggs for an astonishing 4-1/2 years | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - If someone were to create an award for "mother of the year" in the animal kingdom, a remarkably dedicated eight-limbed mom from the dark and frigid depths of the Pacific Ocean might be a strong contender. Scientists on Wednesday described how the female of an octopus species that dwells almost a mile below the sea surface spends about 4-1/2 years brooding her eggs, protecting them vigilantly until they hatch while forgoing any food for herself. It is the longest known egg-brooding period for any animal, they wrote in the scientific journal PLOS ONE. ...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Fascinating science. But, my mother would have said this octopus mom shows nothing compared to her putting up with me all those years.

Sorry, but the fine should make other companies think twice. I don't think this one will. Quite simply,  a good beginning, but too little and too few given the enormity of the thievery that goes on.

Colorado is the self-described “vanguard" of innovation. But that's not really how it felt to me on Friday after the Denver police stopped the UberX I was
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I'd never heard of Uber before and thought it sounded like an interesting idea. More to the point, there is clearly something wrong with the behavior of this police officer. It illustrates why we have a growing distrust of the police in this country. Hopefully, he will be identified and properly disciplined. Of course, the driver will end up paying dearly for the speeding, which is as it should be.
