Why U.S. green groups are talking about abortion this election

Why U.S. green groups are talking about abortion this election | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
By Andy Sullivan DENVER (Reuters) - Green billionaire Tom Steyer vowed to make the November congressional elections about climate change. Now he's talking about abortion and the economy to get his candidates across the finish line. Steyer, a hedge fund manager turned environmentalist, launched a state-of-the-art operation to push voters to elect governors and senators willing to confront global warming. His NextGen Climate Action political committee is on track to spend more than $55 million in
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While the environment is important, no political party can be about just one issue. It is how a party approaches making decisions that really matters. Sadly, we don't have a rational party devoted to gathering the best evidence and then taking the best available actions; instead we have the politics of propaganda and divisiveness. Worse, on some values issues like abortion and guns there is an unwillingness among the political parties to subject those issues straight to the voters. At least marijuana is now a "public issue," and there is public discussion of same sex marriage.

Ice cube tray manufacturer wins award for irretrievable ice cubes | NewsBiscuit

Ice cube tray manufacturer wins award for irretrievable ice cubes | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
For over 30 years, ice cube tray manufacturers have been engaged in a race to develop a container from which frozen water can never be extracted. Today UK company Pro-Plastic has been recognised for making the first container from which ice cubes cannot be retrieved, irrespective of the cunning and skill of the users. 'Twenty years ago we were appointed by Gillette to develop a plastic packaging product to prevent razor refills from being opened by anyone without a decent angle grinder and we succeeded quickly,' said Alan Hardwick, managing director of Pro-Plastic. 'Later we entered other un-openable product markets, such as scissor packaging and SD cards, but we never thought that our technology could be applied to ice cube trays.'
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Given how much difficulty I have opening almost every package, I think this may not be a hoax. What do you think?

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Nothing speaks of Freud more than the sexism of traditional religion. If god is nothing more than the end of an Oedipal drama, we don't need religion. If we believe that god exists, then we should see god's working in the evolution of social thinking and culture. Jewish, Catholic, Muslim: no matter what the faith, there should be gender equality and acceptance of all or recognition that you don't actually believe in a creator.

American Vernacular takes aim at the hypocrisy of Facebook and its less-than-rightful owner, Mark Zuckerberg, the company's support of right-wing social and political agendas, its insiduous suppression of 1st amendment rights according to its code of decency and outsourced content control, and why Facebook has become the most sophisticated weapon for the killing free speech and expression in American politics while dismantling the fundamental ideals of the US Constitution. Why I visit prostitutes

Why I visit prostitutes | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Just as sex workers are shamed by society, so are the clients who see them. It's time to tell my side of the story
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Personally, I have never paid for sex (or love), but I know people who have. As a shrink, I also knew a few women who were in the life even though they did not need to be; it was more for their own pleasure and excitement. I have often wondered why a society like ours in which almost everything is about money is so resistant to the sale of sex. Sex, drugs, or once alcohol: making activities illegal only makes it go into hiding and thereby make it harder for all who want to be involved. So, yes, I think prostitution should be legal with good medical supervision and the right of the women (and men who ply the trade) to organize themselves as part of the community. What do you think?

When I sit down with Jake Dell, the 27-year-old heir to Katz’s Delicatessen, at a table toward the back of his family’s storied restaurant, he’s staring distractedly into his phone. Kenneth Weene's insight:

Those who know me know that I love a good deli sandwich. Tongue, pastrami, corned beef (what the Brits call salt beef): YUM!! And of all the places I've had good deli, none is better than Katz's on New York's Lower East Side. It is so good that when I was writing "Times To Try the Soul of Man," I refrained from setting a scene there; some places are just too holy for frivolous mention. Anyway, when you're in New York, remember to "Send a salami to your boy in the Army" and have sandwich for me.

The beast with the behemoth arms: A dinosaur mystery is solved | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In July 1965, two gigantic fossilized dinosaur arms replete with menacing claws were unearthed in the remote southern Gobi desert of Mongolia. America’s Most Important (and Wackiest) Referendums This November

America’s Most Important (and Wackiest) Referendums This November | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Should Mainers be allowed to hunt bears with doughnuts? Will Washington gun laws get both tougher and laxer? These and other key questions will be on ballots across the U.S. next month.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I find that few voters bother to actually read and discuss referendums. They are important. Remember that Prohibition, that disaster of American prudishness, started through state referendums and swelled into a national constitutional amendment. I am always fearful of those who would make absolute rights and wrongs into constitutional mandates, be it at the state or the federal level. Oh, and I say give the bears the donuts laced with contraceptives. This bear always preferred jelly.

Church should not fear change, pope says at synod close

Church should not fear change, pope says at synod close | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis has closed an assembly of Catholic bishops that revealed deep divisions on how to respond to homosexuality and divorce, saying on Sunday the Church should not be afraid
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Can this good and caring man slowly shift the course of the hidebound Church; or will the old men, the conservative bishops who cannot see humanity through the veil of church power stand in his way? Even as church-based religion becomes less important in the "Western World," replaced as it were by spirituality and personal faith, still I think Francis is trying to make Catholicism once again relevant. I give him credit for the effort even as I laugh at the ceremony.

A woman with terminal brain cancer is choosing to end her life on Nov. 1 — and that's her right
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I raise my voice in support of this woman's right to end her suffering and to die with dignity. Only four states Washington, Oregon, Montana and New Mexico allow physician-assisted suicide. Hopefully that group will grow. As to the religious issue, besides that being rightfully up to the individual, I would point out that God, if such exists, has given her the need, a terminal illness filled with suffering and degradation, and the means; so why should we assume that God opposes this woman's right?
