Laurie the Moose Lady Puts ‘Heart and Soul’ Into Roadkill

Laurie the Moose Lady Puts ‘Heart and Soul’ Into Roadkill | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Laurie Speakman and the Alaska Moose Federation have streamlined the harvesting of food from the roads. But increasingly, Alaskans aren’t following the rules.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Should the use of roadkill be up to a finder's keepers rule or should it be collected by an agency (NGO or state) for distribution to the needy? Or perhaps it should go to grocery stores. What do you think? We aren't talking that occasional opossum found on the roads of the south but those big critters like deer, elk, and moose that can provide a lot of meals. Here's one view from Alaska. For my part, I certainly prefer this lay's approach, but more than that I hope these many ungulates learn to cross on the green and not in-between.

Donald Trump's national spokeswoman, Katrina Pierson, said on Thursday that her boss hasn't changed his position on immigration—just "the words he's saying."
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Glad the far right has a candidate of plain-speaking and clear convictions. Seriously, this new wiggle-waggle has to be either the funniest or the most pathetic statement of the campaign from either side. Comics should be outraged, the candidates are becoming their own satire or is it farce?

A gay couple was targeted by vandalism. But what happened next reminded the couple why they loved the neighborhood in the first place.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This Broody New Englander wants to celebrate the decency of one neighborhood. This is the reason that hate can't win in America, because we have friendship and caring to fight it.

The ex-pontiff says his crypto-Fascist church (which made Franco a saint) was only ever intended, really, to bring its leaders sex and money.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Now this is the stuff of great novels; but wait, it's not fiction. I love a good conspiracy story, and this is a great one. Most of all I love the idea that people are so incredibly gullible. Hey, sex and money from followers; that's the way to be nuts.

The American Soul Is a Murderous Soul

The American Soul Is a Murderous Soul | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The American Soul Is a Murderous Soul « | Foreign Policy | the Global Magazine of News and Ideas
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Are we as a nation more geared to violence than others? If so, why? This is a thought provoking essay that offers some great insights and raises many good questions. What it doesn't address is the degree to which years of militarism and the glorification of war, especially the carnage of the Civil War, have created a myth of manhood and the warrior. Consider how many of our films are rooted in violence, and you see the psyche of our nation. We don't cheer the person who wins by avoiding a fight but the one who beats the other guy's ass. A sad commentary on who we are.

Maine sees a Somalian community starkly different than what Donald Trump portrayed - The Boston Globe

Maine sees a Somalian community starkly different than what Donald Trump portrayed - The Boston Globe | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Donald Trump’s incendiary charge linking Somali refugees to crime and terrorism was denounced Friday not only by a chorus of Somali leaders but by Senator Susan Collins, a Maine Republican.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This is the New England I love. Thanks to the fine people of Maine who reject the Trump message of racism, bigotry, and fear. It's good to see that there are some Republicans, like Senator Collins, who want to bring people together and not drive wedges. The last time I was in Lewiston, Maine a lady from Somalia made my Sam's Italian Sandwich. The hotel at which I stayed had Somali staff. The UPS store at which I shipped off a present to my son also had Somalian workers. Guess what, they were all competent, gracious, and helpful. The only problem was they didn't say "Ayup." Oh well, if you want that, you can read "Broody New Englander."

You’ve heard we’re in the middle of a sleep deprivation epidemic. But here’s what you should know about that.

One bit of advice: Don't worry if you aren't sleeping, because the worry will keep you up. I usually sleep through the night, but if I don't, I have a method to get back to sleep without tossing too much. My trick, go to a safe inner dialog, one that you know the outcome ahead, and rehash it. Amazing how little you care about continuing it so your mind can turn off. What's you suggestion.

A final blow to myth of how people arrived in the Americas

A final blow to myth of how people arrived in the Americas | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Is there any way the first Americans migrated south along the Pacific coast through an ice-free corridor? No, say scientists.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Some fascinating archeology. Of course, the assumption is that the only original route of original human migration to the Americas was via the Bering Straight. From what I know of the Pacific Islanders and if we assume that there was a capacity to sail along the coast south, why not an assumption that some of the original humans here in the Americas came via the wider Pacific? One thing is clear, the early humans weren't afraid of travel.

Burkina Faso bans the export of donkey skins as a sharp increase in sales to Asia is threatening the animal's population.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
In this incredibly impoverished, landlocked, West African "Land of Honest Men," donkeys are central to life with a ratio of about 1 animal to every 15 people. It seems that the Chinese will convince themselves that almost anything has medicinal value. I wonder what the Asian market would be for "American politician skins". Lord knows that's a population that could use culling. Meanwhile, let's keep the donkeys of Burkina Faso safe.Don't order any donkey skin medicine from Beijing.

Iowa farmers ripped out prairie; now some hope it can save them | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Wild prairie protects soil from farm-killing erosion and reduces water pollution.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
What a great idea, to use nature take better care of nature. Having seen the phosphates bubbling into suds in the Iowa River, I must say this sounds like a great idea. Another possible way to cut the destruction of Iowa's soil and rivers would be to stop the farce of ethanol. Instead, let's subsidize good farming practices. Yeah, I know, taxes or food prices, `but think of the cost to us all when the soil is gone and the water is undrinkable.
