A Feud Between Biblical Archaeologists Goes to Court

A Feud Between Biblical Archaeologists Goes to Court | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
After being stung by criticism (and the cancellation of a lucrative TV deal), one expert sues another for libel. What would Jesus say?
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I wish I'd come up with this story, what a great novel it would make.

Torturers and torture victims to be tortured until they tell truth about torture | NewsBiscuit

Torturers and torture victims to be tortured until they tell truth about torture | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
After revelations that the CIA used ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ to torture prisoners, it has emerged that British forces may have to be tortured to see if they admit to having taken part in similar practices after 9/11 and during recent Middle East wars. The army believes that, unpalatable though it is, this may be the only way to the truth. ‘If we simply ask them whether they used torture, they will say no. If we ask their prisoners if they were tortured, they will say yes,’ said Brigadier Sir John Smythe. ‘The best solution is to put both guards and prisoners in a big room, re-torture the lot of them and see if either side changes their story. The nightmare scenario is if the soldiers admit to torture and the enemy changes its tune and says they weren’t tortured after all. It’s a tortuous process, so to speak.’
Kenneth Weene's insight:

And the torturous discussion goes on and on. Glad I only have to pull out my own fingernails. Time to drown myself in the shower.

My wife sent this to me, which made me a bit paranoid. Oh no, 22 things I'm doing wrong. Well, actually the one I cared about, peeling a banana, I was doing right. Most of this list is just great fun. Besides, being a man I really don't care about how to peel a potato or fold a fitted sheet; but you might actually get some good information.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Too often we forget the hundreds of thousands of innocent people whose lives are disrupted by the cruelty of war, but the stupidity of intolerance, but the selfishness of self-righteousness, by the power-hunger of authority, and by the meanness of the world's indifference. But sometimes, even in the midst of all that there can be hope.

Feathered friends: researchers unveil bird 'family tree' | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Scientists have unveiled the most comprehensive bird 'family tree' ever devised, using genetic data from 48 species to trace how modern bird lineages arose and flourished after the mass extinction that killed off the dinosaurs. The work by researchers from 20 countries helps clarify the evolutionary relationships of modern bird groups and reveals the genetic underpinning of traits such as singing, toothlessness, colorful feathers and color vision. ...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Imagine that hummingbird outside your window, that robin singing, that parrot talking trash: all the wonder of birds. Now thing they all survived and were descended from the dinosaurs. Wow! Will they survive man? Will we cause another mass extinction?

Kenneth Weene's insight:

If a man can't buy products, then the demand for that product is lessened so it's production is smaller. And so on round and round. Siphoning wealth into the "Ponzi scheme" of the stock market only appears to grow the economy. The real economic wealth of a nation is in the actual goods and services it produces and the wellbeing of its citizenry.

WASHINGTON: Police officers across U.S. upset at being seen as brutal racists | Courts & Crime | McClatchy DC | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Police officers dispatched to investigate a 911 hang-up last week in an Idaho suburb were surprised by the reaction they got from the mother of the children who’d been playing with the phone.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While some individual police are no doubt racist, I would imagine that the majority are not. But the system may be a different matter. Do Blacks get the same protection, for example are their alibis checked before arrest? Do the police do as good a job investigating before assuming probable cause? Do Black kids get pushed into the system while white kids are kept out of it and protected? Most importantly, are the racist few among the cops thrown out or protected? Finally, are the police being taught that they are in a war of "them against us" in which the them can so easily be seen as the racially different rather than seeing themselves as one with the whole community?

Ohio man exonerated after spending 27 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit

Ohio man exonerated after spending 27 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Kwame Ajamu, formerly known as Ronnie Bridgeman, was cleared of murder charges a month after his brother and a friend were also cleared in the 1975 killing of Harold Franks.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

$40, 000 a year for being in prison wrongfully. Not that any amount could compensate this man properly. Not that any amount of money can replace the marriage, the children, the sense of career he might have had. But a lousy forty thousand, and I bet it gets taxed. And what of the cops who pushed that 12 year old kid to lie? Will they suffer even one moment of discomfort? There is absolutely nothing the state can do to undo this travesty, but I suggest a lot more money might be a start and maybe prosecuting those cops and passing laws that make it a felony for cops to solicit untrue evidence. Yeah, those might be first steps.

Michigan House Passed Bill Allowing EMTs To Refuse Treatment To Gay People

Michigan House Passed Bill Allowing EMTs To Refuse Treatment To Gay People | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Over the weekend, Republicans in the Michigan Statehouse passed a “license to discriminate” bill that would give just about anyone the right to refuse service [...]
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I am sure there will be some who say this is a question of freedom or personal religious rights. However, since EMTs are paid by government, then those refusing service to about 12% of the population should be paid 12% less. Of course if they refuse once they are on the scene, they should be liable for any civil suit if their action or lack results in death or harm. Besides that, I mean what could be wrong with building a society on discrimination.
