5 good books I fear I may never read

5 good books I fear I may never read | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
It's sobering to think of carrying on into next year the weight of all the unread books on one's nightstand.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Now if he had Broody New Englander on that pile, I'd be upset; but I bet he took a gander at the first page and read the whole thing right off. Hope you'll follow Danny's lead. https://twitter.com/Ken_Weene/status/548507051476152321

Amazon tribe raids Peru village

Amazon tribe raids Peru village | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

About 200 Mashco-Piro Indians armed with bows and arrows arrived at Monte Salvador looking for food.

They are said to have killed domestic animals and taken cooking pots and other metal goods.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

What a strange problem: Should we preserve the primitive and create a reserve as if they were animals to be contained or should we try to connect with them at the cost of their culture? But if they are killing domestic animals and seeking metal objects, haven't we already begun changing them? Anybody remember "The Gods Must Be Crazy?"

How President Obama unwinds

How President Obama unwinds | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Presidents have perhaps the most stressful job in the world. For Barack Obama, recharging his batteries requires a mix of golf, books, Nicorette — but most of all, time with his family.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I found this piece reassuring. I want somebody with a good personal balance running things. I may not always agree with Mr. Obama, but he seems like a man I'd like, We wouldn't golf or talk sports, since I don't do either; but perhaps we could talk books and family life. I just have to figure out how to send him a copy of one of my books. I think he'd enjoy Memoirs From the Asylum.

Rellenong manok is a deboned chicken filled with a jumble of ingredients. If it seems hard to pin down how this dish got all its fillings, it's because of the complexity of the Philippines' culture.

NASA's Kepler space telescope is discovering alien planets again. "Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Kepler has been reborn and is continuing to make discoveries," study lead author Andrew Vanderburg, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), said in a statement. The spacecraft has been incredibly successful to date, finding nearly 1,000 confirmed planets — more than half of all known alien worlds — along with about 3,200 other "candidates," the vast majority of which should

After a day of intense lobbying, the Palestinians persuaded Arab diplomats to support a draft Security Council resolution that is aimed at the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the West Bank.

Party of teachers finally settles restaurant bill from 2013 Christmas lunch | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
After a year of painful negotiations, a group of teachers has today finally agreed how to allocate the bill from their 2013 Christmas lunch, just in time to book into the same restaurant for their 2014 event.  ‘I know it sounds like a small sum to those in the private sector,’ said one member of the group, ‘but there was an important principle at stake: I didn't have a starter and Eric had two glasses of wine.  And I won’t even mention a certain person who isn't even a teacher, she’s just a supply, yet she had a Black Forest gateau that wasn't even on the set menu.  She clearly doesn't do things by half. Except with her job.'
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Torturers and torture victims to be tortured until they tell truth about torture | NewsBiscuit

Torturers and torture victims to be tortured until they tell truth about torture | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
After revelations that the CIA used ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ to torture prisoners, it has emerged that British forces may have to be tortured to see if they admit to having taken part in similar practices after 9/11 and during recent Middle East wars. The army believes that, unpalatable though it is, this may be the only way to the truth. ‘If we simply ask them whether they used torture, they will say no. If we ask their prisoners if they were tortured, they will say yes,’ said Brigadier Sir John Smythe. ‘The best solution is to put both guards and prisoners in a big room, re-torture the lot of them and see if either side changes their story. The nightmare scenario is if the soldiers admit to torture and the enemy changes its tune and says they weren’t tortured after all. It’s a tortuous process, so to speak.’
Kenneth Weene's insight:

And the torturous discussion goes on and on. Glad I only have to pull out my own fingernails. Time to drown myself in the shower.
