It even makes the hosts of "Shark Tank" nervous.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I just sent in my patent on "New Idea" I basically have claimed that new ideas must follow ah-ha moments (also known as epiphanies and Eurekas all covered and now trademarked as well), and since I have the patent on those types of moments, I claim all the new ideas in the world. My best advice to you, stop thinking before you send me your licensing fee. I am setting up a bank account in Nigeria.

Smartphones are making children borderline autistic, expert says

Smartphones are making children borderline autistic, expert says | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

We are hearing a lot about small children using electronic devices; here is an essay suggesting that may lead to developmental problems.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

The other day I posted an article about the widespread use of electronic devices by toddlers. Here's a followup; does that use help produce an autistic attitude towards the world around them. I do know that many people seem to prefer texting to looking one another in the eye. Ever get a text from your dinner partner? My wife just kicks me under the table.

Child malaria vaccine: Final trials bring hope - BBC News | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Final clinical trials of a malaria vaccine - the first to reach this stage - suggest it could protect one third of children against malaria, according to data published in The Lancet.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While many Americans have forgotten why vaccines are important, the people of Africa can only pray that this partially effective vaccine will lead the way to one that will give the same kind of protection that those against polio, measles, mumps, and the like are already providing for billions of people. Meanwhile, malaria continues to be the scourge of Africa and tropical countries around the world.

Ebola drug cures monkeys infected with West African virus strain - BBC News | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
An experimental drug has cured monkeys infected with the strain of the Ebola virus present in West Africa, US-based scientists say.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I abhor the use of monkeys in drug research, I cannot help but applaud any success in the fight against Ebola and by extension other virulent viruses. We can only hope that this vaccine works on those who are infected and that the method will work on future strains of this fast-mutating virus.

For the first time ever, Turkey will permit Armenians to hold a religious service this week to commemorate the massacres and deportations of a century ago, Turkish officials announce.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is a small step, but at least it is a beginning. It is certainly time for the world to recognize the full range of genocides that have marred our human history. Perhaps once we have recognized the true scope of the problem, we may as a species try to eliminate unreasoning hatred pf those who are different.

Fearless Guardian ground convoy arrives in Ukraine | Article | The United States Army | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
VICENZA, Italy -- Paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade Support Battalion arrived in Yavoriv, Ukraine April 11 via a ground convoy from here to deliver the brigade's training equipment for Operation Fearless Guardian.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Okay, who was in charge? I know it must have been Bill Murray. Serious as military stuff is and as opposed to most of it as I am, how could I pass up a chance to reference Stripes as the U.S. army engages in Operation Fearless Guardian—even a name made for comedy. I mean, seriously, the fearless guardian who shows up after the house has been robbed.

Teachers to talk about their divorces at primary school level | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Children as young as five will now be given compulsory lectures on their teachers’ domestic hell as Divorce Education is made compulsory in primary schools. The move comes amid fears children are accessing material such as Don’t Tell the Bride and One Born Every Minute, as well as websites depicting couples in healthy loving relationships, and getting a skewed impression of what marriage is really like.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

On a more serious note, how do schools teach children about the changing nature of family life and its alternative forms? When I was a kid, Dick and Jane had two parents, Mommy and Daddy. Everybody loved their dog, Spot; and all of Beaver's friends were white. Dads knew everything and were never abusive or drunk and we all celebrated Christmas. Today, many adults want to keep their children in that same kind of fantasy world, but reality is much richer if more difficult.

Shriveled grapes, shriveled liberty

Shriveled grapes, shriveled liberty | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
In a raisin case before the Supreme Court, the government will try to defend its kleptocratic behavior.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Kleptocratic, what a great word. It does describe the way in which the government feels entitled to take possession of the property of the people, much like the throne of England against which the colonists rebelled. There is a subtle interplay between the property rights of the individual and the powers of the state. Is it a legitimate role of government, a positivist function if you will, to maintain the price of raisins? While in times of an agricultural price crisis such interference in the free market might be appropriate, why is it appropriate now? For my part, I think it time for the Supremes to put some limits on the kleptocracy.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Over a third of the toddlers whose parents were surveyed were using electronic devices. That took me up short. "Why," I asked myself, "aren't the owners of dogs and cats reporting the same uptick in their pets use of electronics?" I wanted to start a movement for equality for pets, to buy them tablets and smartphones. Then it hit me, people with pets want to interact with their furry-children but parents of toddlers wanted those pesty little ones to just stay quiet.

With the strapline ‘See Naples and die...before you get there’, one Tripoli-based cruise company is reporting a bumper season by tempting hundreds of African tourists to take up the offer of no-frills trips part of the way to the Sicilian coast. With five questionably seaworthy vessels and a fully refurbished, century-old dhow in its fleet, ‘Ahmed is Your Med Tours’ offers exclusive one-way trips to Sicily and whatever Mediterranean port it can find without the unnecessary expense of fuel or a rudder.

Residents in Tokyo have recently reported several sightings of possibly the most patient pet-walker in the world: an elderly man who takes his enormous African spurred tortoise (or sulcata) out for walks around the town. Judging by the tortoise's size, the mysterious pair has probably been together for a very long time, and the tortoise always plods faithfully by its owner's side. It even tolerates the occasional silly costume!

Kenneth Weene's insight:

For years the U.S. has tried to be a friend to Pakistan, now it's China's turn. Of course, China is not concerned with maintaining friendship with India, so it should be easier for President Xi. BUT, Pakistan itself is pretty impossible, and the key area of Pakistan for this project is Baluchistan Province, one of the centers for both political and religious turmoil. It should be fascinating to see if the modern world's preoccupation with money can overcome the ages-old preoccupation with Tribal and religious differences. My bet is this will cost way more than the Chinese think and will result in at least one overthrow of the Pakistani government. Meanwhile, back in India, this might actually work to the advantage of President Mukherjee who is seen as a Hindu-first leader. As for the U.S., I hope we can sit back and allow China more of a leadership role with the attendant headaches. I want other countries to become major players. Russia, China, Iran, Brazil (perhaps), India (perhaps). The EU but not the individual countries. It is time to see the world as interconnected spheres rather than as the hegemony of the U.S.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Four reasonable suggestions that might improve the functioning of the federal government. For my part, I think them good ideas if perhaps beyond our national will. The only one I am not too wild about is getting rid of the filibusterer; it has served some good causes in its time. However perhaps lowering the vote necessary to end one might be a good idea. If you are interested in government and political theory, this is a piece you will find very interesting.
