WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Reuters) - North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue pardoned on Monday a mostly African-American group known as the "Wilmington 10" after they were falsely convicted of firebombing a white-owned grocery store in 1971 during...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It only took 42 years. I am glad that something like justice has been done, but enraged that it has taken so long and that there is no way to undo the harm of such despicable behavior by the state.

Uproar Over Religious Freedom Law Trips Up Indiana's Governor

Uproar Over Religious Freedom Law Trips Up Indiana's Governor | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Mike Pence is on the defensive over a law decried as discriminatory
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This has been one of the most ginned-up controversies of the political whack-a-do set. With very few exceptions, there is no reason a business should know or care if its clientele includes gay couples or not. Moreover, there is no reason for a business to discriminate against approximately 10% of the population unless you are calling for religion-based law. In that case, be prepared to deal with the kind of inter-faith conflict that the U.S. managed to avoid from its inception by calling for religious tolerance and the absence of a state supported faith. That an individual business owner may not like a particular couple who comes into the shop because of their sexual orientation is no different than refusing  to serve them because of their color or their faith. This is stupid law at its worst, and if Pence didn't see that and didn't see the uproar coming, he's a boob. If he did, he's a manipulative ass trying to get a self-destructive political outrage from the dying far-right conservative wing of the GOP at a real cost to us all. Either way, he has shown that he is not fit to govern.

You've probably *heard* that the earth is warming. But how do scientists actually *know* it's happening?
Kenneth Weene's insight:

First and foremost, people have to understand that warming is actually the wrong word. We are like a huge bowl of ice and water. As head is absorbed. the temperature doesn't change so much as the ice melts. When the ice is all gone the temperature rises continually. We should all be aware that what we are really talking about is net energy absorption. Second, even if you don't believe that this is a man-made problem, we still should be trying to do something about it. Why? Because without the Earth we don't have a home. So what do we do? Science is suggesting some very clear actions. Sadly, one change in behavior that is being totally ignored is to stop fighting, stop using weapons and armies. Just think of all the energy released in a battle from all that fuel burned and ammunition exploded. Then think of all the CO2 and other gasses released. Sure, we have to take action at the personal level, but we have to insist that governments and corporations do likewise. Or perhaps it's just time for us to stop; I mean just stop being. Maybe this is the end of the cartoon, and I'm Bugs Bunny saying "That's All Folks."

It also eliminated a 5% sales tax on healthy produce.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

First, congratulations to the Navajo for making a tribal wellness decision. Second, who gets to decide what is junk food and what is healthy? Before other communities emulate this well intended local decision, we had best make sure it can be carried out based on good science and not lobbyist money. Third, we have to decide of government, even at the local level, should be impacting personal decisions in the area of nutrition via tax policy.

Old dogs no longer funded for trick-based education | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) has decided to cut 24% from the adult education budget to remove a culture of just ‘fetching sticks’ and looking cute. Instead, College courses will target young pups: ‘…and if they’ve not learned to catch a Frisbee in their teeth by 19, then they’ll never do it’. A BIS spokeswoman said: ‘While we applaud adult learner’s ability to sit, heel and lick their own balls; the truth remains that many have failed to learn any new tricks. When was the last time you had someone in their thirties bring you your slippers? Too often they shit on the carpet and dry hump your leg.’
Kenneth Weene's insight:

"Lick their own balls;" sexist dogs writing that. Anyway, there goes the class I was going to take next semester; they'll be barking at the moon without this pup.

TV debates to be settled by ‘head punching contests’ say Broadcasters | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
TV broadcasters have decided to ditch the debating format trialed in the 2010 election in which leaders debated policy and outlined pledges and will replace it instead with a series of ‘head punching contests’, confirmed Sue Inglish, Head of Political Programming at the BBC. The move has been welcomed by the right wing media who have long complained that a lefty liberal elite from north London have been allowed to set the tone for the forthcoming election. Right wing media groups say the election should not be settled by ‘some Islington pinko shirt lifter debating policies about EU membership or immigration’ but by two grown men punching each other in the face until one of them cries.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

What the experts always say is there isn't enough evidence to decide but don't take too much of anything. I have no idea if the 1,000 iu plus the D in an eye vitamin I take each day is a good thing or not, but at least it appears to be safe. One of the great dangers is combining supplements that can push one or more vitamins too high. Be careful not a sheep-consumer.

Man Beaten by Hollywood Cops For Looking Homeless Wins $240,000 Settlement | TruthVoice | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

"(H)e was brutally beaten and falsely arrested by five Hollywood, Florida, cops, he claims in a federal lawsuit.

“They tackled me, smashing my head to the ground,” said Gozaloff, of Plantation. “I felt like Rodney King. They were kicking me from all directions. All five cops."

Kenneth Weene's insight:

While delighted that this case has resulted in some justice for the victim of police brutality, I wonder if there will be any consequence for the officers or their commanders. The pity is that police departments have insurance, the premium for which is paid for by taxes, which in turn are paid by people like Mr. Gonzaloff. Until there are consequences for gross injustice by "officers of the law," there will be no change in the way the police far too often brutalize without cause.

Agricultural waste could be used as biofuel

Agricultural waste could be used as biofuel | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Straw-powered cars could be a thing of the future thanks to new research from the University of East Anglia.

A new study pinpoints five strains of yeast capable of turning agricultural by-products, such as straw, sawdust and corncobs, into bioethanol -- a well-known alcohol-based biofuel.

It is estimated that more than 400 billion liters of bioethanol could be produced each year from crop wastage.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If we can find an efficient way to use what is now agricultural waste to generate power, that would be a great step forward.

These kids aren't all right. 7 photos show you a world of change. | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

Photographers from around the world share photos of kids to help us see what climate change really looks like. It's literally about fire and ice.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

No, the world isn't getting that much warmer at this point, because the ice is melting and that keeps the temperatures down. But the climate is changing and the net-absorption of energy from the sun is rising. As a result, disasters are looming larger and greater. Meanwhile, for some it's all about business as usual. Perhaps it's time for us all to see the threat we are creating for all our children.

Spain wants to make amends for expelling Jews from the country in 1492
Kenneth Weene's insight:

At this time of Passover, I wonder how many Sephardim will change their Haggadahs to read "Next year in Madrid." Meanwhile, call me cynical, but I think the Spanish government hoping to see some benefit from this. Spain is doing badly. many Jews, including those in Israel, have lots of businesses and money. Many wealthy, Sephardic Israeli Jews, like other wealthy people want to find alternative, safe havens where they can retreat in times of danger. Is there a market for second homes in the Spanish future. Perhaps a tax haven for those who want a residence? Somehow, I don't trust a sudden awakening of conscience after only five centuries.

Foods You Should Eat Instead of Taking Vitamins

Foods You Should Eat Instead of Taking Vitamins | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
If you're eating a healthy diet, you shouldn't need all those bottles of vitamins
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I think many people are over-dosing themselves with vitamins and other supplements, I don't know that we can actually find enough oranges, salmon, and almonds to do the job. And I for one can't bring myself to eat kale or chia seeds, but milk products I do like. Anyway, in the real world of eating and especially with 7 billion hungry mouths in the nest we call the Earth, eating properly isn't that easy. So most of us will have to keep taking vitamins and hopefully the government will force business to produce and market them properly. Just try to keep your intake balanced and beware cheap knockoffs.

Add eggs to salads to increase carotenoid absorption almost ninefold.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In simple terms adding a cooked egg to a salad helps you absorb the food value of those raw veggies. Somehow this makes sense if we think of out evolutionary ancestors, small omnivores raiding the nests of birds while gathering edible plants and berries. My guess is that if it were safer to eat raw eggs, we'd fine that mixing raw egg into the salad would be even a better plan. Now a little fish in addition...hmm, am I discovering the Caesar Salad or the Cobb. Either way, I love it..

A wealth of research and a touch of game theory can do wonders for your marriage. Here are a few simple pointers
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The writer of this piece and her spouse are clearly headed for marriage counseling or maybe divorce. She thinks she can change him. Ha! The real success is learning to laugh at one another and with one another. Compromise can be surrender disguised. Reinforcing the behaviors we like, while an effective strategy for increasing the frequency of those behaviors, will not lead to improvement in all those other areas. Another key to success, honest and assertive communication about ones own needs and a mutual recognition that both persons' needs are important.

A struggle worth having for students

A struggle worth having for students | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Learning to teach to Common Core standards made us better teachers.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In this brief essay, the author highlights both the strength and the weakness of Common Core. The strength is getting teachers to think about the goals of instruction and to better understand how to implement those goals. In that process of struggling with the concepts and applying them, their teaching has to improve. The weakness is those teachers (and parents) who do not want to do that very necessary work. I so often see posts in the social media praising the educational past, for example about cursive writing, rather than struggling with how to improve new skills and understanding. It is time to celebrate teachers like Kyle Schwartz, teachers who want to be the best for the sake of the best of our children.
