News Flash! The Wait Is Over | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Hello my friends, If you are receiving this letter, well, I consider you a wondeful friend who I cherish and adore and support 100%.  You also know me and how I tend to put my personal efforts aside so I may assist others in reaching their goals and dreams. For the most part, it is done via the It Matters Radio broadcasts and web-site, though I also spend tons of time marketing for others via social media, and often create videos for their music or book trailers.  Of course, all my efforts are d

My dear friend Monica Brinkman's new book is out. I read an earlier draft and highly recommend it as a book that will make you think about your values and the meaning of life.

Stones tools that are 3.3 million years old have been unearthed pre-dating the earliest-known humans in the Homo genus.

Fascinating, especially since I can't use a hammer or screwdriver without hurting myself. Got to love physical anthropology and archeology.

Old woman in bus queue fails to disclose her age | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
An elderly woman in Beaconsfield who spent twenty minutes in a bus queue failed to disclose her age, despite several opportunities. People waiting for the number 39 circular were left stunned when their fellow passenger mounted the bus, having only complained about the weather, the price of digestive biscuits and the youth of today.

Obama to limit military-style equipment for local police departments

Obama to limit military-style equipment for local police departments | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
President Obama plans to stop the federal government from distributing some military equipment to law enforcement agencies across the country, trimming back a practice that drew scrutiny amid concerns about the militarization of local police forces.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I wonder who will scream loudest, the NRA, the military-industrial-espionage complex with weapons to sell, or the law enforcement community. Any government that needs to use military weapons against its own citizens has lost legitimacy. Thankfully, such weapons are seldom needed in our country. When they are, the National/State Guard should be utilized. Mr. Obama is making the right move, but sadly years too late.

David Baril carried out a string of terrifying random attacks on women in New York. When he raised the claw hammer above a stricken female officer, he was gunned down in three seconds.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I often criticize cops for using their guns too freely, but this is an example of when a police officer's decision to fire is absolutely justified. If we want to be critical of undo force, we must also take notice of appropriate force.

Governor pardons Va. man in prison 29 years in case of mistaken identity

Governor pardons Va. man in prison 29 years in case of mistaken identity | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Michael McAlister, convicted in 1986 of sexual assault, bore an uncanny resemblance to another man.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Now comes the hard part for the victim, for Mr. McAlister is clearly a victim. I hope the state of Virginia will do all in its power to make the rest of this man's life comfortable. Clearly he will never have the career and accumulate the wealth he might have, nor will he have the children and the joy of raising them or the years of memories. As for the woman who was raped, I am sure she testified with honest motives, but a partial face recognition? Who was the lawyer who didn't show the inaccuracy of that? Or the prosecutor who was willing to go forward based on that? Especially when there was a beard involved, which makes men look more alike. I hope that she, the woman who was raped thirty years ago, comes forward to at least apologize and offer what comfort she can to her victim. Meanwhile, Mr. McAlister has shown his compassion towards her in ways I cannot imagine.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

As a child I never caught polliwogs or fireflies or fished for sunnies. It wasn't that I didn't want to, it was that I cared about life too much to waste it, too much about nature to harm it. One of the great traumas of my young life was the death of my tropical fish—a story I will someday share. Anyway, here are some little critters that I never knew about before and find fascinating, a species of salamander native to Appalachian streams.

Meet the outsider who accidentally solved chronic homelessness

Meet the outsider who accidentally solved chronic homelessness | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Sam Tsemberis was a psychologist doing outreach for the mentally ill when he stumbled upon a solution to chronic homelessness.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The key for human survival is often belonging and feeling that one matters. It is better to be accepted on the streets than to feel like an animal in an institution. Programs like this that give a homeless person a decent place to call home and a counselor whose job is to help that person accomplish his/her own goals allows the once homeless to know that they matter and belong. Bravo to Sam Tsemberis, who is pictured here, for pointing out the obvious, that we are all more nearly human than otherwise and are all deserving of the dignity of life.

Fifty Authors from Fifty States - Beans and Cod

Fifty Authors from Fifty States - Beans and Cod | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

“You’re going to boarding school,” my father proclaimed. It was December 1954. I was thirteen, in ninth grade and not really ready for this dramatic announcement. I was not, however, completely surprised. My father didn’t like me; that had been amply demonstrated the summer before. I could not forgive his rages and my multiple humiliations. From everything he said, it was obvious he could not remember any of those horrible episodes. Any references to the summer’s events met a look of incomprehension.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

As I get older, I become more willing to share my life story with others — the true memories, not just the bits and pieces that I use in my novels. So, if you are curious about who I am, here is a piece you might want to read. If you're not curious about me, well you may still enjoy reading it because it has a wry humor. (No, wry not rye; no alcohol is consumed in the writing of my blog posts.)

One of earliest known copies of Ten Commandments sees the light of day

One of earliest known copies of Ten Commandments sees the light of day | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The fragile, 2,000-year-old fragment of the Dead Sea Scrolls will make a brief appearance in Jerusalem.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is interesting to me that the only quoted commandment given in the article is actually not the same as our modern Biblical version. "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you." is how we receive it but it says "so you will have a long and healthy life", a small but significant difference. One establishes the primacy of Israel as a political entity and the other the primacy of life as God's gift. One can only wonder at when and why this divergence took place. Was this a political statement by the people making this particular copy, or did other scribes change the text as response to the diaspora?

We all know that writers and directors like to take creative license when telling a story, but there are some things you've seen so many times that you probably believe them to be true even though they're anything but. (crime, science, biology, myths, movies, tv shows)
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is a great piece to read if you like crime fiction, like to watch crime movies, or are a writer of crime stories. For my part, since I want everyone to read "Memoirs From the Asylum," I have to mention that pleading insanity is not only usually unsuccessful, but those who do so successfully end up in that nuthouse I describe or one even worse.

The founder of the Oath Keepers, a loose-knit group of current and former law enforcement officials and military who pledge to defend the Constitution, called for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to be "hung by the neck until dead" for treason last week as the president of the Arizona Senate looked on.

Anti-Discrimination Backlash in Town Best Known for 'Christ of the Ozarks' | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
EUREKA SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — Nestled in the hills of northwest Arkansas, Eureka Springs has long relished in its dual personalities — known for its play depicting Jesus' final days and a 66-foot-tall "Christ of the Ozarks" statue as well as its reputation as a gay-friendly tourist destination, bolstered by being the first in the state to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Eureka Springs is one of my favorite towns in America. I spent a wonderful three weeks there working among other things on "Broody New Englander." The people are friendly and diverse. The setting is magical. The mix of extreme religiosity and belief in personal freedom is a tribute to the people who live there. Whatever the vote on this issue, I am sure that the town will continue to welcome people of all kinds.
