Castro issues Guantanamo Bay demand

Castro issues Guantanamo Bay demand | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

Cuba has demanded the US hand back the Guantanamo Bay military base before relations with Washington are normalised.

In a speech, President Raul Castro also called for the lifting of the US trade embargo and Cuba's removal from a terror list.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I want to see a return to normal relations between Cuba and the U.S. and really don't think Guantanamo is integral to our security and do think it has become synonymous with the worst of American foreign policy, I cannot support giving in to demands in what should be a process of rapprochement, a bilateral discussion.

Facebook apologises after site outage causes surge in conversations | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Facebook has apologised after it was taken offline by hackers today, prompting an hour of chaos in which people spoke to each other, looked out of the window or simply sat in quiet contemplation. The social media site was disabled from 6am to 7am by cyber warrior group the Lizard Squad. Shares in cupcakes, cute kittens and mild racism immediately plummeted as a panic-stricken world wondered what the hell to do with itself.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Could I go an entire hour of the morning without Facebook? Well, maybe if I had coffee.

Do Happy Couples Masturbate?

Do Happy Couples Masturbate? | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
When masturbation meets cohabitation.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is a good thing for two lovers —married or no— to be open and honest with each other. Sexual drive should not become a stumbling block in relationships but rather an enhancing of those relationships. Assuredly, honesty about masturbation is better than secrecy and perhaps in addition to solitary activity, mutual masturbation should be an integral part of a couple's many ways to enjoy.

Commentary: U.S., India unlikely on same page - Xinhua | English.news.cn | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in India on Sunday for a three-day visit to consolidate Washington's strategic partnership with New Delhi.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I am delighted that the U.S. and India are trying to talk. One of the great problems for U.S. diplomacy in recent years has been the failure to recognize the end of mercantilism. We had divided the world into our allies, our enemies, our client states -- which had to do business with us -- and our enemies' client states. Countries that wanted to develop their own economies and their own military strength were seen as a threat rather than as a global partner to be respected. Hopefully, Mr. Obama is guiding us past that foolishness.

Museums now on the look-out for loose appendage | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Following the revelation that the blue and gold braided beard on the mask of the pharaoh Tutankhamun had been hurriedly glued back on after it was damaged, archaeologists and museum conservators around the world are checking for other instances of bodged conservation. Italian conservator Luigi Boninsegna, based at Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, has given assurances that Michelangelo’s Statue of David remains intact, despite one or two female visitors remarking on the disappointing size of his manhood.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Was Moses really Lilliputian? Perhaps an untrained moil at work.

Right to Die Bills Are Being Introduced Nationwide

Right to Die Bills Are Being Introduced Nationwide | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Inspired by Brittany Maynard, California legislators just introduced a bill to let the terminally ill end their own lives.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is a cause to which I give my fullest support. Every person should have the right to decide when his/her life no longer has the quality which they require. (Of course, there should be some brakes so that those who are not competent to fully assess the future can be stopped from rash action, but even those who are depressed or who are mentally incompetent should, in the end, have the right to assess the worth of continued life.)

Scientists reveal bizarre method sea turtles use to find their way home | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
For decades, scientists have been stumped over how sea turtles can locate their birthplace after having traveled thousands of miles. Now, a new study may have found the answer.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I am fascinated by this answer, it still leave me unhappy. I was sure they just called SpongeBob for directions. Now a real question, with all the microwaves flowing through the atmosphere, will this affect turtle navigation? I can imagine them making their labored way to some secret government installation and being mistaken for cyber-warfare ninja turtles.

Oklahoma GOP wants to restrict marriage to people of faith (actually it's one idiot, but who can resist the story?) | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Atheists need not apply: A bill proposed by Oklahoma Republicans would restrict the right to marry to people of faith, and would mandate all marriage licenses be approved by a member of the clergy.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Let us praise the endless entertainment value of right-wing stupidity. Besides the obvious reality that there are religious groups that recognize same-sex marriages, thus making this a farce, it would wreak havoc on the family law system and its protections for children and spouses.

Skull Fossil Offers New Clues on Human Journey From Africa

Skull Fossil Offers New Clues on Human Journey From Africa | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Researchers have discovered a 55,000-year-old skull fossil that they say is a missing connection between African and European populations.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I love physical anthropology and archeology. I can't help wondering outside the box on this. Given that there is one skull and from a specimen that may have died young, could it be that this is an unsuccessful breeding of Neanderthal and more modern human? This doesn't preclude such interbreeding but rather asks the question of the process of compatibility, were the two populations always able to breed making them one species or was the process more involved.

Why people with depression pay more attention to negative information

Why people with depression pay more attention to negative information | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

People with depression process emotional information more negatively than healthy people. They show increased sensitivity to sad faces, for instance, or a weaker response to happy faces. What has been missing is a biological explanation for these biases. Now a study reveals a mechanism: an unusual balance of chemicals in a brain area crucial for the feeling of disappointment.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Absolutely fascinating reading for those of us who have an interest in neuroscience.

Greece votes to change billing address | NewsBiscuit

Greece votes to change billing address | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The Greek electorate has been celebrating the adoption of a national policy of ‘the cheque being in the post’ by a larger than expected margin in early elections. Winning 36% of votes counted, the Syriza Party was able to promise an end to austerity and a return to ‘hiding’ when someone knocks at the door, ‘ignoring’ letters with red font and being ‘not known at this address’. Clearly mixed up with some other country with the same name, Greece explained to the European Central Bank (ECB) that: ‘You have the wrong number. No speekee German. And we are in the process of changing banks anyway’, although the International Monetary Fund (IMF) expressed a degree of scepticism that Greece’s accountant would be on holiday the same day that their dog ate their invoice.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Having trouble understand what's happening in Greece, well here it is explained so clearly that even bankers will laugh.

The U.S. is Actually Exonerating More People Than Ever

The U.S. is Actually Exonerating More People Than Ever | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
And it's largely because of three counties
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is a good thing that we as a nation are exonerating more of those who have been wrongly convicted. It is an even better thing that the attitude among law enforcement personnel has moved towards one  of cooperation with these efforts. What is not so good is that we have ever allowed arrest and conviction rates to become the criteria of success rather than including exoneration of the innocent as part of the duties of police and prosecutors.

NEW DELHI: US, India reach compromise on troubled nuclear deal | Washington Watch | McClatchy DC | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The United States and India reached a deal Sunday to change on liability laws that its leaders say will allow American companies to invest in nuclear energy development in India.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While there are still issues between the two countries and while India is still a major polluter —try breathing in New Delhi — this is a great move forward. If you recall, the Obama's first state dinner was for the president of India. The President has worked long and hard to improve American-Indian relations. I wonder how the GOP will react to his success.

Of course, the question of whether to keep the mask intact or get to the written materials is in itself fascinating.

A recent study in the European Journal of Sports Sciences concludes the majority of students do not wash, yet the same students would happily start if the European Journal of Sports Sciences would stop ‘creeping them out’. The same teenagers admit that the main causes of self-consciousness in the shower were body self-image, duelling banjos or someone called Big Gonzo telling you to ‘pick up the soap’.

My bet: All of us, men and women, can recall the discomfort of showering after PE class. At least as adults we can laugh at those memories.

God, Allah and Jehovah struggle to agree on live TV debate format | NewsBiscuit

God, Allah and Jehovah struggle to agree on live TV debate format | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Despite increasing strife between their respective followers and the impending Judgement Day in which the sheep may or may not be separate from the goats and the unbelievers may or may not be cast into the eternal pit of fire, it has emerged that God, Allah and Jehovah are still unable to agree on the format of their long-awaited live TV debate. The main bone of contention is said to be whether or not other gods should be included, while there have also been calls for a separate debate to the north, where Odin is seen as a serious contender. Jehovah, a jealous god, has refused point blank to appear on the same platform as Ba’al or Marduk, while Allah insists that no other gods can take part in the debate because they don’t exist anyway.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Now this has me laughing. I hope my friends will find it amusing, too. I am sure that any god worth his/her/its salt has a sense of humor; if not why on earth do we have ostriches and wombats?
