It's Earth Day: Making Nature Happy Is Easier Than You Think

It's Earth Day: Making Nature Happy Is Easier Than You Think | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
You don't necessarily have to buy an expensive hybrid or install a pricey wind farm in your backyard to make your life a little bit greener. It's not rocket science: you can be kind to nature and to your wallet, too.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

So Earth Day is over, now make it an Earth Lifetime. Here are some steps to take.

Study: 2 In 5 Americans Earning Degrees After High School | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The Lumina Foundation says nearly 40 percent of adults held college degrees in 2012 — the biggest one-year jump since 2008. And it says that 60 percent college attainment is "within reach" by 2025.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Improving the education of the American people is essential to maintaining our standard of living. However, we must not allow that financial motive to overshadow the importance of education in improving the political process and the personal and aesthetic growth of individuals.

Chimpanzees are quite choosy when it comes to their sleeping arrangements, and new research suggests the apes prefer a firm bed made from stiff, resilient wood.

Loch Ness Monster satellite image ‘sighting’ stirs controversy — again

Loch Ness Monster satellite image ‘sighting’ stirs controversy — again | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
It couldn't be, could it?

Satellite pictures have picked up on something very strange in Scotland's famous Loch Ness.

An image shows a large 100-foot long shape, with apparently two large flippers, all in the waters that are "home" to the fabled Loch Ness Monster.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I have no idea what it is, but I do hope it's Nessie. I love the legend and the speculation. o the best of my knowledge, Nessie has never killed anyone, turned over a boat, or even stolen a dram of good whiskey. I wish her a happy rebirth.

G.O.P. Discovers Useful Voter Outreach Tool: Gun Sweepstakes

G.O.P. Discovers Useful Voter Outreach Tool: Gun Sweepstakes | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Online weapon giveaways have become one of the fastest growing ways for Republican candidates to build up donor lists and expand support.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

And all the Democrats ever offered me was a chance to have dinner with Barack Obama. Maybe I should become a Republican and get a gun. Sorry, but in my mind this is sick. (Not that the "dinner invitation" wasn't; I never responded to those appeals.)

WASHINGTON: Ann McFeatters: Why Hillary? The public awaits her answer | Opinion | McClatchy DC | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Hillary Clinton says she still has to figure out why she'd run for president of the United States. "The hard questions are not do you want to be president, or can you win. The hard questions are why. Why would you want to do this and what can you offer that could make a difference."
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I love politics and political discussion. I think this piece asks a great question. Sure Hillary is very likely to be the next POTUS, but why should she be? What vision does she offer? How, in her opinion, would she make this a better country through her leadership? For that matter what vision does any possible candidate bring to her/his job application, his/her appeal to us the employer?

It must be incredibly frustrating to be an ACA critic right now. All of the recent news regarding the law has been good news.

While I would still prefer a single payer system, the ACA or Obamacare as the right likes to call it, is looking a lot better than most of us expected. In fact, it seems to be working. Sorry about that to my Republican friends.

Nevada range fight revives 'Sagebrush Rebellion'

Nevada range fight revives 'Sagebrush Rebellion' | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The federal Bureau of Land Management returned a Nevada rancher’s cattle, avoiding a potentially dangerous confrontation. But the legal fight over grazing fees continues.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Reminds me of the song in Oklahoma, "The Cowboy and the Farmer Can be Friends". If you think Mr. Bundy a hero, remember that he is taking advantage of your (public) land to make his living the same way a Uranium miner might. He is despoiling your land to help himself. On the other hand, if you think him a scoundrel, remember he is upholding a way of life that goes back at least a hundred and fifty years.
By the way, of course the government will get fines in place and then take his profits from any sales of his beef. He'll go broke, but it will take a while as opposed to him backing down. Which (IMHO) makes him a fool. Like I said, musical comedy.

New York City's former mayor is spending $50 million to fight the N.R.A. | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
In his first major initiative since leaving office, the former New York City mayor announced plans to launch a new gun control organization that he hopes can rival the National Rifle Association.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As a gun owner and advocate of reasonable gun control, I am fascinated to watch the NRA and Bloomberg square off. As a rational person (or am I), I cannot help but wonder when saner, more moderate voices will take over this debate. Meanwhile, I have another reason to avoid watching network television. Ads are not discussion. What happened to the America where there was meaningful debate or did that end in Illinois (Lincoln-Douglas)?
