To understand how jealousy works, take a look at your dog

To understand how jealousy works, take a look at your dog | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Dogs do experience jealousy, according to a new study. And their motivations might teach us about our own.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Teaching dogs to share affection is crucial. That only occurs when the human is the alpha animal. Humans who coddle their pets will experience more pet jealousy and even territoriality.

Criticized for failing to hold Wall Street accountable for financial crisis, government prosecutors win fraud case
Kenneth Weene's insight:

When I think of all the little people who have gone to jail for selling marijuana and I think of all the bankers, bond traders, etc. like this SOB, I can't really get too enthusiastic, but it is a small beginning. Now, why hasn't his boss been charged as well? And how much did this actually cost the company after they subtract the profit made on the deal? A few million? Sorry, but the fine should make other companies think twice. I don't think this one will. Quite simply,  a good beginning, but too little and too few given the enormity of the thievery that goes on.

NEWPORT, Del. — The first time Nigel Sykes tried to get money from the Seasons Pizza restaurant, he did it with a gun, forcing his way into the business through the back door.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I think this may be the best farce I've seen since Fawlty Towers went off the air. Sure, it's a waste of court time, but I would love to watch this trial. I might, however, be thrown out of the court when I started laughing.

10 Fascinating Old Things that Still Work - ODDEE | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
At a time when almost everything has an expiration date, it is hard to find anything that works for a year before it's time to replace it. We have managed to find 10 things that work even to this day.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Silene Stenophylla is an approximately 31, 800 year old plant. At least that's when it last bloomed before Russian scientists resurrected it from seeds found in thawing permafrost. Check out the other great oldies in this set. My only question: how come they didn't take a picture of me as the world's most ancient novelist (note I didn't say oldest, just most ancient, which is how I feel many days)?

My Uber got pulled over by the Denver police — and then things got really weird - GeekWire | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Colorado is the self-described “vanguard" of innovation. But that's not really how it felt to me on Friday after the Denver police stopped the UberX I was
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I'd never heard of Uber before and thought it sounded like an interesting idea. More to the point, there is clearly something wrong with the behavior of this police officer. It illustrates why we have a growing distrust of the police in this country. Hopefully, he will be identified and properly disciplined. Of course, the driver will end up paying dearly for the speeding, which is as it should be.

Among other revelations in the newly-released papers, the White House warned of the Supreme Court candidate's "halting speech" and "laconic nature" in one memo
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is the kind of honest assessment any POTUS should be receiving about potential appointments. It is to Mr. Clinton's credit that he nominated somebody who saw her dignity and values as more important than the White House's dignity. IMHO, Justice Ginsburg has more than lived up to the faith the president placed in her.

Scientists find new clues to brain's wiring

Scientists find new clues to brain's wiring | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
New research provides an intriguing glimpse into the processes that establish connections between nerve cells in the brain. These connections, or synapses, allow nerve cells to transmit and process information involved in thinking and moving the body.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Always good to know that neuroscience is moving forward. I wonder if I would have gone into psychology if it had all this hard science available back then. Maybe, I would have gone directly to writing books. I like personality and behavior more than I like neuroscience. But I do love learning this stuff.

Ancient Coins Found Buried in British Cave

Ancient Coins Found Buried in British Cave | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Digging through a cave in central Britain, archaeologists uncovered 26 ancient gold and silver coins belonging to the Corieltauvi tribe, a group of people that lived in Britain before the Roman conquest. The discovery of the coins was a surprise, because they were found at a site called Reynard's Kitchen Cave, which is located outside the Corieltauvi's usual turf. "It might be that we have a member of the tribe living beyond the boundary that is more usually associated with the territory," Rachael Hall, an archaeologist at the National Trust who led the excavation, told Live Science in an email. This more recent find at Reynard's Kitchen Cave might be additional evidence that members of the tribe once hoarded coins.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Nice to know there's still buried treasure to be found in the world. Got to love this kind of chance archeological find.

Study: Kids on screen-time diet lost weight, performed better in school

Study: Kids on screen-time diet lost weight, performed better in school | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Research suggests parental monitoring of media consumption can have a lasting effect on a child's development
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I certainly think this study tells us something important, I wonder how much of the effect was due to getting the kids away from those ubiquitous screens and how much was due to the greater amount of parent-child interaction that resulted or the simple fact that the parents were showing some interest and concern. I must admit that I am always torn when we go out to eat and see kids with their pads. Part of me applauds the lovely quiet. Part of me wants to yell at the parents, "Why don't you interact with your children?"

Nur Afifah Binte Mohamed Rahim's curator insight, July 21, 9:37 AM

Parents used to think that they cannot control children and technology. However, parents do have power and this is demonstrated in this article. Weight loss can be determined with the amount of technology we use. Additionally, the more time we use on technology, the more the weight gain! This could be due to the inactivity while we are on our devices thus not doing anything. Thus this article further reiterates the point on healthy lifestyle, especially so about inculcating certain healthy habits starting young.

Researchers: Children exposed to religion have difficulty distinguishing fact from fiction

Researchers: Children exposed to religion have difficulty distinguishing fact from fiction | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

A study published in the July issue of Cognitive Science determined that children who are not exposed to religious stories are better able to tell that characters in “fantastical stories” are fictional — whereas children raised in a religious environment even “approach unfamiliar, fantastical stories flexibly.”

Kenneth Weene's insight:

So if parents tell kids that fantasy is true, the kids tend to believe fantasy; and if parents rear their kids knowing the difference, the kids recognize the difference. It seems obvious, but it isn't. Conventional wisdom has always taught that kids were naturally credulous.

Ancient Priest's Tomb Painting Discovered Near Great Pyramid at Giza

Ancient Priest's Tomb Painting Discovered Near Great Pyramid at Giza | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A wall painting, dating back over 4,300 years, has been discovered in a tomb located just east of the Great Pyramid of Giza. The painting shows vivid scenes of life, including boats sailing south on the Nile River, a bird hunting trip in a marsh and a man named Perseneb who's shown with his wife and dog. While Giza is famous for its pyramids, the site also contains fields of tombs that sprawl to the east and west of the Great Pyramid. The new painting was discovered in 2012 by a team from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which has been excavating these tombs since 1996.
