Cuts causing soldiers to die without haunting soundtrack | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Military chiefs are warning that a reduction in the army's budget means that more British soldiers are now dying in foreign conflicts without the benefit of slow motion and haunting ethnic music playing over the scene. ‘A lot of our boys aren't getting a proper send-off due to cutbacks’ said Colonel Bob Armitage ‘it’s a serious problem. Our chaps go to these war-zones and sacrifice their lives for the cause and the least they should expect is that when their number’s up they’ll get to die in slow-mo with a mellifluous vocal arrangement playing over the top. Is that too much to ask?’.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

War has become a specialized area of public relations, shades of bad dystopian novel.

Kansas Is So Broke That It Has To Auction Off Sex Toys

Kansas Is So Broke That It Has To Auction Off Sex Toys | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Kansas' budget woes are so dire that the state government has resorted to selling off furry handcuffs and vibrators seized by its revenue department.

The Topeka Capital-Journal first reported on the sale Wednesday, explaining that the new bounty,...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

My question: Will the good conservative, God-fearing people of Kansas who elected Sam Brownback as the state's governor gobble up this sexual bounty or will the toys go elsewhere, perhaps to one of those hippie liberal states? This is just funny.

People see a need for a 3rd party--but will they vote for its candidates? | Elections | McClatchy DC

People see a need for a 3rd party--but will they vote for its candidates? | Elections | McClatchy DC | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A majority of Americans, annoyed with Republicans and Democrats, think a third political party is needed, according to a new Gallup poll.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is a great question. Obviously we need a new party, one that will represent the needs, aspirations, and values of the great majority of Americans instead of the current two parties which are in the end so beholden to their own organization of operatives and donors that they can no longer effectively lead or govern. BUT, if such a party were to appear, would we vote for its candidates or just tell ourselves they haven't got the votes so why waste ours? The answer is for a new party to represent either the work of a new coalition of major personalities or the splitting off over a central issue of a large portion of an existing party. One personality isn't enough. One issue isn't enough. Personally, I think if somebody were to get some of our better public personalities not from politics to join a coalition of the best from both parties, those capable of working with others, that might actually generate a new party that could get votes. What do you think?

On his way to participate in a United Nations talk on Climate Change, and coming from his national address on airstrikes in Syria, President Barack Obama stepped off Marine One and proceeded to salute Marines with a coffee cup in his hand.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Even the Marine Times says it was not a big deal. From my perspective I give him credit for not tipping the cup and spilling coffee all over himself; that's what I would most likely have done.

Why 25% of Millennials Will Never Get Married

Why 25% of Millennials Will Never Get Married | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
New study shows that more people under 35 will be single forever
Kenneth Weene's insight:

One thing they didn't include in the research was the effect of having parents who divorced versus parents who had stayed in marriage. My guess is that is very powerful as a moderating influence. Another interesting question for those who are not looking to get married: do they want to have children? My guess is that attitudes towards having children or putting off having children is another major moderating factor. But certainly one thing that is very key is the fact that today's young men are much less interested in holding jobs and more interested in whatever will be the new "homesteading."

It's not a small world after all: world population will soar | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Contrary to some earlier projections, the world's population will soar through the end of the 21st century thanks largely to sub-Saharan Africa's higher-than-expected birth rates, United Nations and other population experts said on Thursday. There is an 80 percent likelihood that the number of people on the planet, currently 7.2 billion, will increase to between 9.6 billion and 12.3 billion by 2100, the researchers said. They also saw an 80 percent probabili

José Mujica: is this the world’s most radical president? | Giles Tremlett

José Mujica: is this the world’s most radical president? | Giles Tremlett | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Uruguay’s José Mujica lives in a tiny house rather than the presidential palace, and gives away 90% of his salary. He’s legalised marijuana and gay marriage. But his greatest legacy, writes Giles Tremlett, is governing without giving up his revolutionary ideals
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I enjoy learning about unusual leaders from other countries. I don't know if Mujica is a saint, a scoundrel, or just an ordinary guy, but he is certainly different. Considering this piece and what I know about Gandhi and Mandela, I wonder if we wouldn't be better off electing more politicians who have spent time in prison. Perhaps raising marigolds in your potty gives you perspective enough to not continuously try to impose your will on the world.

Sadly, nobody raised this issue in the court hearings over Citizen's United or Hobby Lobby. That might be a sticky wicket for him.

RAF pounds pick up truck into the ground | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
In wave after wave of laser targeted weaponry the RAF have decisively destroyed a pickup truck yesterday. 'We have strong suspicions that the truck wasn't taxed,' said an aerial reconnaissance expert, 'or maybe the owner removed the tax disc a day early. Either way, it certainly didn't look roadworthy, and almost certainly wouldn't have passed its MOT had it not been destroyed.' It is an operational objective of the Allies to remove all Islamic State vehicles that are not safe, taxed and suitably insured. 'We're cracking down on the illegal use of red diesel, too,' said one of the operational commanders.

In a historic settlement, the federal government will pay the Navajo Nation more than half a billion dollars to settle claims that it mismanaged reservation funds for more than 60 years, the tribe and the government announced Wednesday.

There is no question that the government failed the tribe in its management of tribal resources, but I think that this small amount of money will quickly disappear into the twin maws of the tribe's needs and the tribe's own inadequate government.
