New research comes down on the side of organic food, but doesn't make any claims about health effects
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Of course much of what is sold in supermarkets as organic is somewhat questionable in actual provenance and is more expensive. But, I prefer to buy organic when I can and especially at farmers' markets.

What’s left of the political center?

What’s left of the political center? | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Party identification tells one part of the story, voting behavior tells another.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Perhaps the real point is that the two party system is outdated. Perhaps it is time for a parliamentary system with coalitions among parties so that building consensus with those closest in thinking rather than creating loggerheads with those who are different becomes the goal of every party at all times.

Small Costa Rica gives troubled Central America big boost at World Cup

Small Costa Rica gives troubled Central America big boost at World Cup | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A win for Costa Rica against the Netherlands today could help unite – at least momentarily – this fractured, troubled region. Central America is the world’s deadliest region outside an active war zone.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Years ago when I was in Costa Rica, one of the things which consistently amazed me was the love of soccer and the proficiency. Barefoot youngsters and young adults played fierce games all over the place. It was a passion that I have never seen for sports in the U.S. So, I am nor surprised that this small nation can field such an outstanding team. I hope they make it to the top.

As a social scientist (economics and psychology) I thought this worth the sharing. Yes, much social science research confirms the blindingly obvious. But sometimes it reveals things nobody had thought of, or suggests that the things we thought were true are actually false.

America’s Vanishing Bowling Alleys

The closing of New York City's oldest bowling alley highlights the long decline of the "blue-collar country club"
Kenneth Weene's insight:

So where have those league bowlers gone? What is the new working class country club? Or, are people becoming more isolated? Perhaps we don't need gathering places because we gather via electronic media, but I doubt this one. My bet is much of that bowling time has been converted to church time (Yes, America's second growth business, right behind private prisons.) Then , too, there are health clubs and many people want to get toned and ripped. What do you think?

Lawmakers approve sweeping gun bill in Massachusetts House - The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram

The head of the Massachusetts Gun Owners Action League, said the group supports the changes in the bill related to gun owners, particularly the requirement that police chiefs state in writing their reasons for denying licenses.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

At last, a spark of sanity can cooperation in the gun debate. Obviously, permits for weapons should only be denied for good and stated reasons, and those denied weapons should have an opportunity to challenge that decision in court. At the same time, there are people who clearly shouldn't have guns, not because guns are bad but because they have proven themselves to be dangerous people.

Summer camp no longer means just swimming, arts and crafts or roasting marshmallows. Check out these 8 crazy and fun ways to spend the summer! (summer, camp, kids)
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Having grown up in the summer camp industry, my parents owned and operated two camps in Maine, I was fascinated to see some of there alternatives. Personally, the one I would have liked best is not in this set -- that would have been for readers and writers. Nevertheless, these are impressive and remind us that kids can have some wonderful experiences and learn a great deal outside of school. Of course somebody has to foot the bill. For too many kids, the most they can hope for is a week of church camp or worse a few hours a week at the neighborhood pool. Childhood should be rich with possibilities and experiences for all. How do we make that happen?

Kenneth Weene's insight:

I share this because the topic should be of universal concern, not just state by state. I can think of no more important right than the right to die with dignity and under ones own rational choices. It infuriates me that when I feel my life no longer has quality that I will not have a simple, legal, and effective method available for its end. That is a choice we all deserve the opportunity to make, whatever our final decision.
