The debate in the US Congress last winter over whether potatoes should be curbed in school lunches is emblematic of the modern-day crisis in US governance. Lobbyists and other powerful interest groups dominate the tenor of the debate.

Three quarters of whites don’t have any non-white friends

Three quarters of whites don’t have any non-white friends | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Data show that for most white Americans, none of their best friends are black.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I first saw this on Facebook, and I thought it worth sharing. Personally, I seldom think about the race of my friends unless there is a specific reason, for example when discussing Indian topics with one of my Native American friends or Indian topics with one of my Indian friends (from India) or Black related issues with one of my Black friends, or ... You get the point. But all of them, Indian, Indian, Black, Hispanic, Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, Euro-American, or European, etc.: all of them share two very important qualities: they are intelligent and caring people. Does anything else really matter? Oh, yeah, I love and respect them all.

NRA Tweets About Kids Having Fun At Shooting Range After Uzi Accident

NRA Tweets About Kids Having Fun At Shooting Range After Uzi Accident | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The NRA Women's Twitter account blasted out suggestions for making practice at the shooting range fun for kids on Wednesday, less than two days after a 9-year-old girl accidentally shot her shooting instructor at an outdoor range in Arizona.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Animal shaped targets and exploding targets to make shooting more fun for kids: great ideas from the NRA's women's division. How about a target of a shooting instructor with an exploding head? Sorry, but at some point maybe they should take kids shooting guns seriously. When I learned to shoot (as a kid) it was with much care and safety once goal one. Yeah, this is become gun madness.

Alonzo Cushing, a Union lieutenant, will receive the Medal of Honor 151 years after he displayed heroism during the Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As a history buff, I loved this. While I detest war, I admire courage under fire. Assuredly, he died in what IMHO was a good cause, not only saving the union but also ending the evil of slavery in the U.S.

Denmark’s New Lego Building, Modeled on Its Iconic Bricks, Captures the Beloved Toy’s Whimsy

Denmark’s New Lego Building, Modeled on Its Iconic Bricks, Captures the Beloved Toy’s Whimsy | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
This week the first six oversized Lego bricks were laid for the foundation of the Lego House in Billund, Denmark, the Lego Group’s hometown. Designed by BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, the architecture of the Lego House is based on—what else but?—the iconic shape of the Lego brick. Unlike metaphorical Lego houses...

Bravo. I love Lego as a company, a form of play, and as a source of creative thinking.

The Strange Tale of the North Pond Hermit

The Strange Tale of the North Pond Hermit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
For nearly thirty years, a phantom haunted the woods of Central Maine, creeping into homes, and surviving on what he could steal. He became a legend. Then one day last year, the hermit came out of the forest. His name was Christopher Knight
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is the kind of great character you can find in Maine, which is why I will soon be publishing "Broody New Englander", a book with my novella "The Stylite" and two short stories--all three set in Maine. Meanwhile, all authors have to delight in people like Christopher Thomas Knight, for it is the unusual which so often inspires us to see the twists and quirks in the normal.

Ancient flying reptile's head crest looked like a yacht's sail

Ancient flying reptile's head crest looked like a yacht's sail | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A flying reptile whose head was topped with a big bony crest shaped like the sail of a yacht swooped through the skies over Brazil roughly 90 million years ago. Scientists announced on Wednesday the remarkable discovery of about 50 fossilized skeletons of a creature called Caiuajara dobruskii, a type of flying reptile known as a pterosaur that lived alongside the dinosaurs, at a site in southern Brazil. These pterosaurs, whose wingspans measured up to nearly 8 feet (2.35 meters), inhabited a lakeside oasis in a large desert region during the Cretaceous Period, living in vibrant colonies with others of the same species of all ages, they said. "This helps us to have a glimpse on the anatomical variation achieved by this species from young to old," said Alexander Kellner, a paleontologist with Brazil's National Museum at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, who led the study.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Got to love those fossils.

Obama Stifled Hillary’s Syria Plans and Ignored Her Iraq Warnings for Years

Obama Stifled Hillary’s Syria Plans and Ignored Her Iraq Warnings for Years | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The rift between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama over Syria that spilled into public view this week was three years in the making and was about much more than just arming the rebels.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It seems to this observer that both approaches are fraught with peril. The most rational thing would have been to let the Russians, whose client state Syria is, take the lead. The other big player in the Syrian civil war is Iran, guardian of the Shi'ia, who make up a sizable portion of the Syrian population. The only American ally who has a serious concern about Syria is Israel, who may well have helped create the chaos.  Finally, there are the Turks, who might be concerned, but who certainly have done nothing I know of to get us involved. My bottom line, the U.S. shouldn't see itself as the world's policeman. Hell, we have trouble handling our police at home.

When More Exercise Is Not Better

When More Exercise Is Not Better | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The latest research shows there may be an upper limit to how helpful exercise can be on your heart
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Okay, I admit it: for me exercise is mostly going to the fridge for a snack. Sometimes I vary my routine and take a nap instead. Still, I feel vindicated by this piece. That nasty gym teacher in eighth grade would never agree that there are limits to healthy exercise. Well, he was wrong, there was a good reason to sit on the bench when my team was in the outfield.

Seriously, living well means living in moderation.

Let’s talk about sex (more): Education, conversation is the way to help prevent sexual assault | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
There's no single solution to America's sexual assault crisis, but teaching kids about sex is one place to start
Kenneth Weene's insight:

A simple piece of advice from me: If you can't discuss having sex and can't discuss whether you want to have sex with one another, you really shouldn't be doing it. It makes no sense to engage in behavior you can't talk about. Rape and assault will hurt us all, but shared words will never harm us.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

I have no problem with consenting adults entering into multiple person relationships which are in their eyes marriages. I do not think government benefits, such as social security, can reasonably be shared over multiple spouses. Also, and this is the biggie, I don't think the use of welfare to support those not in the "primary legal" relationship should be allowed. Obviously, the consenting adult bit is very important; no forced child marriages. But multiple spouses? Why not?

Breakfast can be a solid nutritional dividing line. Cross into the realm of whole grains and eggs, and you feel great about embracing what we've…

Two reasons I shared this. First the common sense thought that maybe people are best off doing what they feel best doing; maybe there are no universal rules.

But my second reason is the great laugh I got when I looked at this article and saw the illustration. Sugar-coated, multicolored cereal? Yeah, healthy breakfast be damned; let's talk advertising money.

The Day Ferguson Cops Were Caught in a Bloody Lie | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The officers got the wrong man, but charged him anyway—with getting his blood on their uniforms. How the Ferguson PD ran the town where Michael Brown was gunned down.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I have no idea what attractions or businesses might exist in Ferguson, but I would not go near that damn town for anything. Indeed, I can only say I think that we should boycott Ferguson, Missouri. Indeed, we should treat its Black citizens who might wish as political refugees and offer them all possible assistance in moving out of that place of horrors. This is as much a disaster as any toxic; perhaps we should have FEMA involved along with the FBI. As for the police, perhaps they should be in Guantanamo; are they not the worst kind of terrorist?
