Seven Travel Pests Worse than Bedbugs

Seven Travel Pests Worse than Bedbugs | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
While bedbugs can be an annoyance, there are pests that are much more dangerous. Spiders, scorpions, fire ants and mosquitoes can all create troubles.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This is enough to put me off of travel, but to be honest not for long. Let's just say there are lots of dangers out there and I prefer to stay at hotels that do their best to keep me safe or at least they should hire a decent exterminator. Do you know how to protect yourself from bedbugs? First thing, don't bring your bags into the hotel until you have scouted the room. Go in the room, strip back all the covering of a corner of the mattress, and press the channel around the mattress rim open so you can see if there are any little critters scurrying there. If there are, hie thee to another hotel, not just another room in that one. Oh, and have a great night.

Maggie Tails: Uncle in Vermont by Kenneth Weene

Maggie Tails: Uncle in Vermont by Kenneth Weene | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

She loved traveling, delighting in hotels and particularly enjoying room service breakfasts: scrambled eggs not too firm or a cheddar omelet, a side of bacon, toast buttered and strawberry jam, hash browns with ketchup, and coffee—light and sweet. Uncle, our twelve-pound terrier-poodle mix, had little use for me, but she did appreciate my serving her hotel breakfast. Another thing about Uncle and hotels stays: that was the only time she would tolerate a leash. Yes, she did understand the rules that people imposed even if she knew they were stupid and surely didn’t apply to a dog who knew exactly where to go and what to do without being told.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Thanks from Uncle and myself to Maggie Adkins for sharing this post which I hope will tickle dog lovers everywhere.

11 Record-Holding Roller Coasters (roller coasters, rides, theme parks, amusement parks, travel, places) - ODDEE

11 Record-Holding Roller Coasters (roller coasters, rides, theme parks, amusement parks, travel, places) - ODDEE | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

Theme parks are always trying to outdo one another with bigger, faster, steeper—and all around crazier—rides. (roller coasters, rides, theme parks, amusement parks, travel, places) The idea sketched above, is, however, different. It's designed to kill its riders. A great way to go if your time is now, What do you think about suicide by amusement park ride?

Kenneth Weene's insight:
I used to love riding The Cyclone at Coney Island and often went to Great Adventure in New Jersey. So, how could I resist this great trip through the world of roller coasters? However, the one that fascinated me, is the coaster that hasn't been built, the one designed for euthanasia. What do you think about suicide (or execution) by amusement park ride?

Russia's Desert - Roads & Kingdoms

Russia's Desert - Roads & Kingdoms | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
More than 20,000 villages lie abandoned in Russia. Meet the inhabitants who stayed behind.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
My poetry friends know that I am fascinated by words in languages other than English that have meanings beyond that tongue's ability to fully translate. One of my favorites is the Russian word "toska", which refers to the sadness and melancholy of the soul that drives one into isolation. While I could never be a hermit (in Russian an "otshelnik"), those who can have always fascinated me. As an author, I want to write about them, but when I start, they immediately become connected with others. Now were I Cormac McCarthy, who is himself a loner, perhaps I could tolerate actually writing such a book. For now, I will instead enjoy this article about people in Russia who remain in a strangely depopulated area. Why strangely? Because it's—by Russian standards—a perfectly nice area with livable weather and fertile ground. The thing is, people who live there add little to the overall wealth of their country as compared to those who live and mine in Siberia or those who farm in more productive areas. That's a big difference between the US and Russia, we continue to support areas that are marginally productive, like the Ozarks. While some people may leave for better jobs and futures, we keep right on providing roads, healthcare, education, and the like to those who remain behind. Not so in Russia.

At any rate,

L'Chaim

let us celebrate toska
and those who weep vodka.
Toast not life but death,
lonely and forgotten..
weeping soul of Mother Russia.

These are the most powerful languages in the world

These are the most powerful languages in the world | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
If an alien were to land on Earth, which language would enable it to most fully engage with humans?
Kenneth Weene's insight:
What languages do you speak? I have a bit of French and of course English, at least the American version of that one. While I have done a lot of traveling in my life, I learned only a few words of other languages and relied a lot on gestures. I do wish I had studied Spanish in school and not spent time on Latin, which doesn't make this list. Ah, well, at least I can write and you can find out more about that at http://www.kennethweene.com
