We Now Spend More At Restaurants Than at Grocery Stores

We Now Spend More At Restaurants Than at Grocery Stores | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Data shows that Americans are now spending more to eat out than to cook at home.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Of course this story, as so many do, misses some important questions. How much of that money is spent at fast food joints that can be almost as cheap as eating at home and how much is spent on lavish, expensive meals that represent a real change in our way of looking at food? Eating chain slop suggests that we as a nation just don't care about nutrition or our kids but only about ease and greasy, salty, fat. One  the other hand, if we are using disposable income to celebrate the joy of food and drink, perhaps we are learning that there is more to life than just hurrying through it. If that's the case, can we look forward to having decent American cheeses and fish prepared with delicious and delicate sauces? Can we look to join the great cooking countries like Belgium, France, and the great Basque cooks? Dare I hope? So far there's little evidence of such a change, only another Starbucks offering a fast, plastic-wrapped lunch next door.

Today’s chefs are using neurogastronomy to change the way your brain perceives flavor.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If you're a foodie, this is a must read. Meanwhile, I so want to go to The Fat Duck. I'll even eat the more rates if Lewis Carrol would allow. Never had imaginary beings before.

5 incredibly delicious chain restaurants you should never, ever eat at and 1 you should but can't

5 incredibly delicious chain restaurants you should never, ever eat at and 1 you should but can't | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
You know you want to. But sorry, you can't.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is a wonderful job of writing that reveals the warts the social values warts of five fast food chains and then teases you with one that is just fine but only available in a few states. (By the way, I don't like their food. "Which one?" you ask. I've tried all six of these and don't like any of them, not even the good guys.)

How restaurants cut corners: embalmed shrimp and headless beer

How restaurants cut corners: embalmed shrimp and headless beer | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
It’s not just Olive Garden. Many restaurants save costs with a little sleight of hand
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is almost enough to make me rethink my reservations for this evening. At least it will motivate me to give a decent tip, because the staff are underpaid; that too part of the cost cutting. I almost never order wine, don't eat desserts (a great item to overprice), and seldom eat steak. But I do like Chilean sea bass no matter what it really is and will eat shrimp, hoping to not be poisoned. My big mark-up item, I love that espresso even at $4 for a swallow. Anyway, bon appétit.

This Restaurant in Japan Gives Solo Diners Stuffed Animals for Company

This Restaurant in Japan Gives Solo Diners Stuffed Animals for Company | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Eating alone in restaurants is awkward. Sure, you can take a book and pretend like the solitude is emboldening. But be honest with yourself—sitting across from an empty chair is sometimes sad and lonely. This whimsical restaurant in Japan has a solution: stuffed animals.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

One big question: Do they have a cover charge if I bring my own stuffed animal? My moose would love to join me for dinner at a nice restaurant. What if I ordered him a green salad; would an American restaurant seat him? "Oh bother! Such big questions for such a little brain."

The Weird Thing That Makes You Drink More Wine

The Weird Thing That Makes You Drink More Wine | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Drink too much? Blame your wine glass. Serving alcohol in a larger glass seems to make people drink more, finds a new study
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I've always figured that a larger glass was more pleasant to use since I could better smell the wine and because it is visually nicer. Since my wife and I share one glass of wine if we have wine at all, obviously I don't drink more or less but always the same amount, three sips to her five. What I do know, however, is that sipping good wine improves a meal and drinking too much wine or inferior wine makes the food unimportant and is waste. So "chin-chin" and drink with moderation and style.

New York Restaurant Giant Says No Tips, Please

New York Restaurant Giant Says No Tips, Please | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Danny Meyer hopes to make the restaurant industry more equitable for all employees
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I always loved eating at Danny Meyer's restaurants. About tipping, doing away with gratuities and paying staff well is a great idea as long as staff are motivated to provide good service, say by some form of profit sharing. Without that motivating factor, the quality of service will tend to fall without tips. My sad prediction: Without tips or profit share, tThe big spending regulars will get the attention of management and the rest of the customers will be ignored.

The 10 Most Disappointing Chain Restaurants

The 10 Most Disappointing Chain Restaurants | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Maybe "Olive Garden" stands for "overly Americanized and overcooked pasta" in Italian. Whatever the case, Olive Garden continues to disappoint fans of Italian food. Without the endless salad and bread sticks, it would not even be worth stopping by.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I don't do chains if I can help it, but these are certainly among the worst. I will say this, if I have to choose between one of these and Burger King or McDonald's as I travel along a highway, I will go for most of these. However, Subway would be better than eating this slop.

Advocates want restaurants to stop catering to young diners with kids’ menus

Advocates want restaurants to stop catering to young diners with kids’ menus | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
At certain restaurants, chefs are now offering young diners house-made pappardelle pasta and grilled polenta over ratatouille instead of the usual chicken fingers and french fries.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

With cooking shows popular on TV, it should become easier to get kids to try new food. The real problem is getting adults to think about trying better places and teaching their kids how to behave in restaurants so the experience can be fun for all.
