The Daily 202: Trump’s attacks on the GOP’s most prominent Latina, Susana Martinez, should alarm Republicans

Seven reasons it’s a big problem
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Mr. Trump will hopefully bring out the Hispanic vote and with this kind of nastiness he will surely direct it towards the Democratic party. Along the way, he also seems determined to make women hate him. I guess the guy just lacks the sense god gave little geese. I can only hope that the rest of America has better judgment than this would-be POTUS.

Beyond an incredible knack for inventing ice cream flavors you didn't even know you needed, Ben & Jerry's touts a long and proud history of social consciousness and responsibility.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I'm not even that big on their ice cream, but these two guys are really outstanding examples of what American capitalists can be, decent, creative, willing to give back; and of course their from New England.

PART 2 | In New Hampshire, the feeling is widespread. But what it truly means varies across demographics.

Old Hampshire votes for Pitt the Elder | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

In surprise twist to the presidential primary in New Hampshire, voters from Basingstoke to Gosport have resoundingly thrown their support behind William Pitt, the 1st Earl of Chatham. Despite Pitt being absent from frontline politics for the last two hundred and forty years, staunchly anti-French and dead, he is seen as more palatable than Hilary Clinton or Ted Cruz.

New Jersey Governor and presidential hopeful Chris Christie vetoed a law that would have prevented convicted gang members from buying guns in the state.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Another self-proclaimed straight-shooter from the right turns out to be a panderer, in this case to the NRA. Yep, got to get those votes from the far right. Now, Republicans, how do you feel about this? Anybody ready to throw your hands up in disgust?

Donald Trump: NFL ‘football has become soft like our country has become soft’ | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
But he still loves Tom Brady.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is a sick puppy calling for more brains damage to young athletes. I guess he'd have no problem sending our troops into danger or ordering federal authorities to fire on civilians. Just what we want in America, a dumb, hate-filled, jerk who likes violence.

Camron Rauch's curator insight, January 14, 10:49 PM

1. In this article, Donald Trump explains an extended metaphor between the National Football League and the United States in a speech he gave in Nevada. He says, like our government, the game of football has too many regulations, even if it protects the player's(citizen's) safety. He states that the NFL and the USA are not as strong and credible as it used to be. According to him, he plans to change that.

2. In class, Donald Trump is the topic of discussion numerous times. We also learned about political parties, him being the leading Republican in the polls.

3. This article is biased against Donald Trump.

Tax credits cause cancer, claims Osborne | NewsBiscuit

Tax credits cause cancer, claims Osborne | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
In a surprise announcement by the Chancellor, the British public have been warned that suckling on the welfare teat is worse than 'smoking processed meats'. George Osborne has defended his decision to cut tax credits as an attempt to save lives, combat salami-handouts and low-wage beef jerky. A spokesman for Mr. Osborne said: 'We've been trying to warn the public, that the welfare state is bad for your health - particularly with our funding of the NHS. Pensions can cause diabetes. Your Housing Allowance will give your herpes. And Disability Benefit causes...um...well...disability'.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Interesting satire. Do conservatives see the needs of others as being caused not by chance or misfortune but by the attempts to help? It certainly sounds that way when you listen to American Republicans. My guess is that was part of the reason that the caring people of Canada changed direction in their latest election.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker called on President Obama to cancel Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to the U.S. next month after a tough day for global markets.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Right!! Instead of diplomacy and reason, let's go back to the days before Richard Nixon made discussion with the Chinese possible. Does this idiot have a clue what foreign policy is? This is the kind of bombast that makes him not only un-electable but also a danger to his party. He does make one thing clear, however—that the GOP thinks the stock market is the center of America.

Missouri Lawmakers Respond To Sexual Harassment Of Interns By Suggesting Intern Dress Code

Missouri Lawmakers Respond To Sexual Harassment Of Interns By Suggesting Intern Dress Code | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The Missouri legislature would like to continue its internship program despite the program being marred by the recent sexual harassment of interns.

The idea the lawmakers have come up with? Imposing a dress code for the interns to "help everyone keep their focus on legislative matters."
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Sex and the Interns: is this a new reality show? Where are the Kardashians—there has to be Kardahians? Seriously, any person elected to political office who isn't capable of knowing what sexual harassment is a Bill Clinton. And any young person, male or female, who applies for an internship and doesn't know that they are entering the land of unrestrained libidos is a Monica Lewinsky. That two Missouri GOP legislators are trying to dye the dress just makes them another part of the American political farce.

It's just the latest large crowd for the surging senator from Vermont.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I love Sanders's challenge to the establishment within the Democratic party. That he is a good natured and even tempered man certainly makes him more attractive. More importantly, I want to have meaningful discussion within the parties, real contrasts among candidates and Mr. Sanders is helping to bring that about in the Democratic corner. On the Republican side, with all its candidates, I don't hear real debate and difference. I hope that they too will achieve real debate.

Trump’s candidacy sparking ‘a surge’ in citizenship, voter applications

Trump’s candidacy sparking ‘a surge’ in citizenship, voter applications | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Amid talk of deportations and travel bans “there’s something new going on,” officials say.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This may be Mr. Trump's greatest contribution to America, the political awakening of the Hispanic population. And with a thunderous Ole! they will support the Democratic party not just in this election but most likely for years. If that happens, he will truly have changed our country for the better; it is long since time for non-Cuban Hispanics to become political and to help not only build and defend this country but also to run it.

Richard Estrada, born in the United States, experienced his share of bigotry as a teen. He felt pressure not to speak Spanish. His white high school classmates in Tucson taunted him as "Rico Suave," the name of a 1990 Spanglish hit by an Ecuadorean singer. But that was mild compared to wha
Kenneth Weene's insight:
It is one of the stranger facts of American politics that Hispanics seldom go to the polls. It is one of the important facts of Arizona politics that the Hispanic community holds the power to change the state. If Trump brings Hispanics to the polls, will the Democratic party be able to win their hearts?

The future of America is at stake — and it's on all of us if we allow Trump to win the White House
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I totally agree with this assessment, and while I will continue to push for Bernie, I will in the end vote for Hillary if she is the nominee—unless of course there is a miracle across the aisle and the Republicans find a real leader and caring nominee. (Yeah, right that will happen.)

The Daily 202: A Ted Cruz win in Iowa could kill the ethanol mandate

The Daily 202: A Ted Cruz win in Iowa could kill the ethanol mandate | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

Every Republican who has won the Iowa caucuses since 1980 has strongly backed ethanol.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

I don't like Cruz, but I assuredly want him to take Iowa because it is well past time to get rid of this subsidy. All government subsidies of businesses should phase out over time, especially in the energy sector. If costs don't fall and demand rise over time, it is unlikely that the technology is worth maintaining. Given world hunger, why do we need to keep the price of corn up? And given that Monsanto is the big winner in the corn game, why would anyone with meaningful ethics want to push ethanol?

A hands-off Democratic race: Clinton, Sanders won’t speak ill of each other | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
In stark contrast to the rollicking GOP primary, the two leading Democrats are slow to engage each other.

The ideal goal of any presidential campaign should be to unite the vast majority of Americans in common purpose. At least that is the Democratic Party's goal. Sadly, these days, the Republicans not so much.

The road to the White House leads from the cow carved from 600 pounds of butter to the stand selling grilled pork chops on a stick.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

It seems that as a nation we are far more enthralled by celebrity than by thinking about issues. Both Clinton and Trump should have agreed to taking part in the Des Moines Register Soapbox. If you aren't prepared to answer real question as a candidate, how are you going to do it as POTUS?

Why don’t Americans vote? We’re “too busy.” | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Don't act surprised.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I want to run a very different reason by you. Could it be that the continuous political advertising drives many to feel that elections are just big used-car sales events? How many of us reach a point at which we are so sated with the claims and counter-claims that we just no longer care or see any difference? Were I running a campaign, I would put almost all the money and energy into creating direct contact with voters and spend as little as I could on the media circus. Oh, and the where that money comes from. Do candidates and parties really think that email after email and donation letter after donation letter makes me more likely to vote for them (or contribute)? I think they have that one backward, too. Please share your thoughts.
