Kenneth Weene's insight:
Sometimes the news is just too funny to ignore. Since there was no picture—how do you get a good shot of flatulence?—I thought I'd remind you of some good speculative fiction. Meanwhile, reminder, don't eat beans before surgery.

What The Amish Can Teach Us About Modern Medicine

What The Amish Can Teach Us About Modern Medicine | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
When healthcare is expensive, the Amish culture of autonomy and thrift may be a way to balance communal support and individual responsibility. Sara Talpos finds out more.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Obviously, this is not the way healthcare can work for everyone, but as is often the case the seemingly quaint ways of the Amish offer some real value for exploration. If nothing else, you way want to buy a bottle of B&W for those kitchen burns.

The Loss - The Morning News

The Loss - The Morning News | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
To understand everything wrong about health care in America today, look to a horrifying trend in amputation.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As a Type II Diabetic I am very aware of the threat of amputation (and loss of sight). Those are the threats that keep my fork out of that piece of pecan pie and stop my ordering fries. Friday I pick up a new pair of "diabetic" shoes which are designed with room for when my feet swelling during the day. Diabetic? Be careful. Don't end up with your foot in a bag.

Ebola drug cures monkeys infected with West African virus strain - BBC News

Ebola drug cures monkeys infected with West African virus strain - BBC News | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
An experimental drug has cured monkeys infected with the strain of the Ebola virus present in West Africa, US-based scientists say.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I abhor the use of monkeys in drug research, I cannot help but applaud any success in the fight against Ebola and by extension other virulent viruses. We can only hope that this vaccine works on those who are infected and that the method will work on future strains of this fast-mutating virus.

My Brother's Pregnancy and the Making of a New American Family

My Brother's Pregnancy and the Making of a New American Family | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
My brother Evan was born female. He came out as transgender 16 years ago but never stopped wanting to have a baby. This spring he gave birth to his first child
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Over the years I practiced as a psychologist, I worked with a number of transgender individuals. I've also read about some inter-sex people, people with a mix of both sexes' physical characteristic. However, this story blew me away. The obvious follow-up questions whiz through my head, i.e., what will this child be told and when, will he think of Evan's partner as Mom or Evan and if the partner how will that impact, and of course what will this ;title boy's sexual orientation and identity come to be. Along with those questions is another theme that overrides: how wonderful that science can help people live so much more in tune with how we see ourselves than could be done in the past.

Kenneth Weene's insight:
As a kid, I was given paregoric as cough medicine. I don't remember if it helped my coughing, but it sure made me feel better. 92 proof with an opium kicker. Funny thing, I didn't grow up an addict or a drunk, but I still cough a lot—a little thing called allergies.

Kids are the best.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

A simple but wonderful insight. Nut, why limit it to kids. I's want my stuffed moose with me if I need an operation. Hospitals are scary places for us all.

The Best Way to Treat Peanut Allergies? Eating Peanuts

The Best Way to Treat Peanut Allergies? Eating Peanuts | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
In a breakthrough study, researchers show that it’s not only possible to tamp down allergic reactions to peanuts, but by eating small amounts of them infants can avoid getting allergic in the first place
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Peanuts are such a basic of baseball, circuses, and saloons to say nothing of great foods like M&M Peanuts and peanut butter. They are a great treat and ubiquitous. But, some people are terribly allergic. Of course those of us who received allergy shots as kids know that there can be some homeopathic treatment for allergies and welcome it. More and more medicine is learning that many illnesses are effectively disruptions due to immune reactions (such as allergies) and auto-immune reactions. Teaching the body how to regulate itself is a promising new direction for medicine.
