NTX Woman Awarded $229K For Getting 153 Robocalls | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A federal judge has awarded a North Texas woman $229,500, saying a cable company harassed her with 153 robocalls even after she complained about them.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I love the company's defense: we're victims of an unpredictable law. Somehow Time-Warner as poor baby victim makes me laugh.

Former Alabama Death Row inmate Anthony Ray Hinton to be freed after new testing on bullets

Former Alabama Death Row inmate Anthony Ray Hinton to be freed after new testing on bullets | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Chief Deputy Jefferson County District Attorney John Bowers and Assistant District Attorney Mike Anderton filed a motion late Wednesday afternoon to drop the prosecution of Hinton on the capital murder charges after results of new tests on crime scene bullets.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Over and over the same story, insufficient and contradictory evidence used to condemn people, especially Blacks, for murders they most likely didn't commit. Every state should assume the responsibility of making sure that such miscarriages of justice have not occurred rather than waiting for an outside agency to take on that burden.

Dozens in D.C., Maryland paid the ultimate price for cooperating with police

Dozens in D.C., Maryland paid the ultimate price for cooperating with police | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Some of the victims didn’t receive protection, but others were offered protection and turned it down.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The right to cross-examine ones accusers must be protected, but so should the witnesses. One way to protect them is to allow depositions to be admitted if a witness is murdered before trial. This would actually make it foolish for perpetrators to use murder as an out. It might be reasonable if once the deposition were taken to allow the defense to also take a deposition in a protective situation. Then if the witness is killed, why both sides are available to the jury.

2 innocent men freed after 39 years in prison

2 innocent men freed after 39 years in prison | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
CLEVELAND — After 39 years behind bars for a 1975 murder they didn't commit, two men were released from prison Friday. Ricky Jackson, 57, and Wiley Bridgeman, 60, were both released at separate court hearings.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

So how will Cleveland and the state of Ohio now take care of these men? Clearly, they can not give them those years back. Clearly, they can not give them the wives and children they may have had around them. Clearly, they can not give them the memories of wonderful days, of a child's birth, or anything. Will they at least make sure these three men (because there is a third who was freed earlier) don't have to worry about surviving, about having a job, about eking out a living with no skills and not resume? Will they at least make sure that these three men can have decent homes, cars, clothes, food? And will there be any repercussions against the now retired police officers who perpetrated this lie to clear a case and get that credit?

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Reuters) - North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue pardoned on Monday a mostly African-American group known as the "Wilmington 10" after they were falsely convicted of firebombing a white-owned grocery store in 1971 during...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It only took 42 years. I am glad that something like justice has been done, but enraged that it has taken so long and that there is no way to undo the harm of such despicable behavior by the state.

Men Who Attacked Malala Sentenced To Life In Prison | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan sentenced 10 men to life in prison on Thursday for the 2012 attack on teenage education activist Malala Yousafzai, the BBC reported.

Yousafzai was just 15 years old when she was shot in the head while riding her...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I find it hard to believe that these men will actually serve out their prison terms and of course the chief perpetrator is yet to be captured, but this is at least a first step in establishing not just justice for Malala but more importantly justice and protection for all the young women of that region.

Attorney General Holder limits civil seizure process that split billions of dollars with local and state police

Attorney General Holder limits civil seizure process that split billions of dollars with local and state police | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Holder’s action represents the most sweeping check on police power to confiscate personal property since the seizures began three decades ago.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Congratulations Mr. Attorney General on doing the right thing. Local and state police have been abusing this federal law for years. The "war on drugs" has clearly shown that government bureaucracies can become as unscrupulous as the worst gangs.
