The Best Bacon in America

The Best Bacon in America | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
One of the most difficult parts of being America's Bacon Critic is that I haven't been able to lovingly catalogue every single bacon tha
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Many things are important to me. At a personal level the list includes cheese, coffee, and bacon. Bacon? Yes, I admit it. I love bacon. Show me a bacon-cheeseburger and I'll salivate like a Saint Bernard. So, how could I resist sharing this article about the best bacon in America. The only down-side of posting this, now I'm thinking breakfast. Where can I find some egg salad with a double side of BACON? Have a tasty day.

Advocates want restaurants to stop catering to young diners with kids’ menus

Advocates want restaurants to stop catering to young diners with kids’ menus | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
At certain restaurants, chefs are now offering young diners house-made pappardelle pasta and grilled polenta over ratatouille instead of the usual chicken fingers and french fries.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

With cooking shows popular on TV, it should become easier to get kids to try new food. The real problem is getting adults to think about trying better places and teaching their kids how to behave in restaurants so the experience can be fun for all.

We Now Spend More At Restaurants Than at Grocery Stores

We Now Spend More At Restaurants Than at Grocery Stores | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Data shows that Americans are now spending more to eat out than to cook at home.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Of course this story, as so many do, misses some important questions. How much of that money is spent at fast food joints that can be almost as cheap as eating at home and how much is spent on lavish, expensive meals that represent a real change in our way of looking at food? Eating chain slop suggests that we as a nation just don't care about nutrition or our kids but only about ease and greasy, salty, fat. One  the other hand, if we are using disposable income to celebrate the joy of food and drink, perhaps we are learning that there is more to life than just hurrying through it. If that's the case, can we look forward to having decent American cheeses and fish prepared with delicious and delicate sauces? Can we look to join the great cooking countries like Belgium, France, and the great Basque cooks? Dare I hope? So far there's little evidence of such a change, only another Starbucks offering a fast, plastic-wrapped lunch next door.

We must relearn to eat: Here’s how we teach our kids — and ourselves — to find pleasure in what’s good for us

We must relearn to eat: Here’s how we teach our kids — and ourselves — to find pleasure in what’s good for us | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
We sneak veggies into kids' meals. We choose from chocolatey and salty variations. But taste is a matter of choice
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I only learned to appreciate vegetables when I was grown and discovered that many could be eaten raw or grilled rather than boiled to mush. Assuredly, what we eat and enjoy around our children helps determine their choices, especially if we avoid the sugar, salt, and fat triad that is such a large part of the "American" diet.

This Restaurant in Japan Gives Solo Diners Stuffed Animals for Company

This Restaurant in Japan Gives Solo Diners Stuffed Animals for Company | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Eating alone in restaurants is awkward. Sure, you can take a book and pretend like the solitude is emboldening. But be honest with yourself—sitting across from an empty chair is sometimes sad and lonely. This whimsical restaurant in Japan has a solution: stuffed animals.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

One big question: Do they have a cover charge if I bring my own stuffed animal? My moose would love to join me for dinner at a nice restaurant. What if I ordered him a green salad; would an American restaurant seat him? "Oh bother! Such big questions for such a little brain."
