WTF is '80% lean' ground beef, and why should I care?

WTF is '80% lean' ground beef, and why should I care? | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
What do the numbers on ground beef packages mean? We explain.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Like a typical man, I just figured that fattier ground beef would taste better and lean would be healthier. But, it isn't that simple. Luckily, there is nothing in this article that my wife didn't already know so she has always told me which mix to buy depending on what she was going to make. However, you may find it interesting and it may even save you some money while giving you better tasting food.

This article discusses the role of carbs in the human body, and asks how we should approach managing our intake rather than eliminating them entirely.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Because I try, with limited success and an occasional cheat, to cut carbs, I found this a fascinating piece; so I decided to inflict it on my friends and followers. What is your favorite diet approach?

The differences in nutrient levels between fresh and frozen are so minor that they would be unlikely to have an impact on overall health.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This finding is all well and good, but what about taste and plate appearance? For me, I prefer fresh almost all the time.

A fuller accounting of the results of a massive government-funded experiment on fatty foods challenges the conventional advice about what is healthy, and what is not.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
So it isn't quite so clear that cholesterol kills or that using saturated fat is much worse than vegetable oils; what does this tell us about science and nutrition. For me it indicates that mostly we all need a balanced and reasonable diet without being preoccupied with government guidelines. Second, it suggests that the process by which knowledge is disseminated in our society is very flawed. Meanwhile, mangi in su because life is short and should be lived to the full.

‘No safe limit’ for pizza | NewsBiscuit

‘No safe limit’ for pizza | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies, 66, shocked the UK’s population with the announcement today that there is no safe consumption level for pizza. Dismissing the notion that pizza is OK as part of a balanced diet as an old wives’ tale, Dame Sally said that even one slice a day could lead to muffin top, manspreading and even bingo wings. While apologists point to the role of pizza as part of the fabled Mediterranean diet, the new guidelines advise that even a small hand-thrown crispy margherita is literally the thin edge of the wedge, leading rapidly to the family-sized deep-pan meat feast and related problems such as being unable to get off the sofa, drinking Stella, shouting and watching The X-Factor.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I'll be eating that last slice of my meat lover's pie when they put my body in the oven. Wait, how about being buried in a coffin that looks like a pizza carton. So much for those food guidelines. Pass the chianti.

Scientists (sort of) settle debate on low-carb vs. low-fat diets | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
NIH researchers put 19 volunteers into metabolic chambers (yes, like the ones used for mice) and put them on two different kinds of diets to see what would happen.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

One is left to wonder what would happen if the subjects were then switched from low fat to low carb and from low carb to low fat. My own research on takeaway is that Chinese is better than Indian because curry often interacts with Styrofoam and never plan on takeaway chocolate in Phoenix during the summer.

The ancient history of the potato could change the story of civilization
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This is a fascinating piece of anthropological writing. Did what was being farmed affect the complexity of ancient cultures? The tubers, such as potatoes, versus the grains, such as corn: an interesting effect.
Eve Pasterfield's curator insight, August 16, 2016 11:39 PM

The following article is from one single persons perspective however it is not biased. The author goes to great lengths to explain the evolution of potatoes alongside humans.

The article states how potatoes are a "super crop" as they require a minimal amount of soil and water to grow, making them a popular carbohydrate choice across the globe. The article also states that potatoes (among other similar crops) are grown in African, Asian and some European regions. This fact offers insight in to just hoe far the origional product has to travel before it can be consumed.

Little to no information is given in regards to how the potato is actually produced, merely is gives background history and reasons for such a vast popularity which construe the benefits of potato growth and consumption.

Tia Baker's curator insight, August 31, 2016 7:33 AM
The above article discusses the concept of the impact that the types of crops grown has on the advancements of civilisation. It talks about the role crops have played in the development of societies, how potatoes were once only eaten by the lower hierarchy social structure, being less of an importance to the higher class of society. Potatoes are said to be known as a "superstar crop" as they feed billions of people using limited soil and water. The article also refers to the counties in which grew potatoes (as well as other crops) as they were a nutritious plant which acquired most calories. These countries included ancient Africa, Asia, Europe and ancient Americans. The article points out that the potato is a staple food as it requires minimal land and less water which is highly beneficial and convenient. Nowadays the civilisation farms for not only the starchy root vegetable itself but many other variations such as french fries and potato chips.
Kyle Patchett's curator insight, September 2, 2016 5:39 AM
The article explains an anthropological and economical argument on the productivity of a society's main crop in correlation to their advance as a society. What one argument is trying to convey is that if a society grows in an area with a 'bad crop' then their development is slowed down and they will lack complex, far-reaching, hierarchical social structure that is considered one of the hallmarks of civilization. The other argument In an anthropologist's version of events, certain regions were cursed because they were less efficient at growing food. Low productivity leads to low agricultural surpluses which in turn leads to less complex societies. The potato is personified as 'evil' and 'sinister' due to societies advancement relying on the growth of the potato. If one societies' crops were effected by an endemic disease then the growth of the society was altered along with the potato. However, if a society such as the Inca's grew potatoes and grains productively, they would advance as a society. The Inca's being extremely advanced in ideological thinking and they ultimately thrived until the invasion of the Spaniards.

Perhaps it An heirloom grain revival takes root in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands

Kenneth Weene's insight:

The supermarket mentality, the failure to curb population, and the belief that science always does the right thing have been major forces in driving us away from healthier eating. This is a refreshing change. Many of my Native American friends are involved in trying to make traditional seeds more available. Sadly, theirs are often among the worst diets as the U.S. government sends them surplus junk instead of encouraging healthy local farming.
