How smart is a bumblebee? Smarter than you'd think, say scientists. | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Scientists trained bumblebees to score goals with miniature balls, suggesting 'unprecedented learning abilities.'
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This fascinated me. Insects capable of learning and abstraction. WOW! Now, can they learn how to bottle and sell their own honey instead of having the fruits of their labor stolen by humans and bears? Have a sweet day.

Giant pandas are no longer an endangered species

Giant pandas are no longer an endangered species | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
There's mixed news in the animal kingdom, as one beloved species celebrates increased numbers and another slips closer to extinction. These developments come from the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species, which assesses a species' conservation status.

Here's a happy story for us all. I love Pandas, not as much as moose or sloths but definitely in my top tier.

What I Learned From Tickling Apes

What I Learned From Tickling Apes | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Humans aren’t so special. Animals think much more deeply than we imagine.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Are other species closer to human than science has wanted to admit? I found this paragraph particularly important. "One reason this whole debate is as heated as it is relates to its moral implications. When our ancestors moved from hunting to farming, they lost respect for animals and began to look at themselves as the rulers of nature. In order to justify how they treated other species, they had to play down their intelligence and deny them a soul. It is impossible to reverse this trend without raising questions about human attitudes and practices. We can see this process underway in the halting of biomedical research on chimpanzees and the opposition to the use of killer whales for entertainment."

10 Weird Service Animals - ODDEE

10 Weird Service Animals - ODDEE | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
From rats to kangaroos, unusual support animals are popping up everywhere.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Okay, I believe that your rat, iguana, pig, etc. help you get through the day, but I do question some of the ill-behaved dogs wearing vests that seem to be filling our streets. Seems to me that there should be some criteria for actually being considered a service animal. Now about my protection rattler, why can't I bring her into the bar with me? She wouldn't hurt anyone who wasn't going to hurt me."

I agree there are many strange animals being called a Service Animal but also believe that their value is undeniable saving lives and there are regulations in place. Meet our Maggie who has saved my life countless times since her age of 8 weeks. Thank you for this post so people that are in violation may reconsider and heed the rules for the better of those who need this help.http://www.MaggieTails.com

Why do so many veterinarians commit suicide? - The Boston Globe

Why do so many veterinarians commit suicide? - The Boston Globe | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Column explores why so many vets take their own lives.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
If you know a veterinarian, thank them for their work and their caring. Many of them want so desperately to know that the care they give our pets matters to us and is appreciated. Remember that they too grieve when a dog, cat, horse, or whatever animal for whom they have cared dies and often it is much harder on them because they have had to euthanize an old friend. Make no bones about it, each of our pets is their old friend. How horrible it must be to have a dog you have known for years lick your hand as you insert that lethal injection to end their suffering. Sure, I know you pay the bill when your pet needs care, but be sure you add that application directly to the vet because they are special, caring people.

The surprising link between the tapirs of Costa Rica and climate change | Ensia

The surprising link between the tapirs of Costa Rica and climate change | Ensia | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
New studies suggest that protecting tapirs and other large seed-eating mammals is key to preserving carbon storage in rain forests.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Cutting through all the science is the simple fact that tapirs are just delightfully cute animals. That they may also be important to the health of the forests seems almost secondary to those sad eyes and long prehensile snout. At any rate, let's try to save all the animals and our planet.

Burkina Faso bans donkey skin exports, affecting Asian trade - BBC News

Burkina Faso bans donkey skin exports, affecting Asian trade - BBC News | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Burkina Faso bans the export of donkey skins as a sharp increase in sales to Asia is threatening the animal's population.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
In this incredibly impoverished, landlocked, West African "Land of Honest Men," donkeys are central to life with a ratio of about 1 animal to every 15 people. It seems that the Chinese will convince themselves that almost anything has medicinal value. I wonder what the Asian market would be for "American politician skins". Lord knows that's a population that could use culling. Meanwhile, let's keep the donkeys of Burkina Faso safe.Don't order any donkey skin medicine from Beijing.

If you have domesticated animals, it is your responsibility to protect them from the wild predators that live around you. As a strong supporter of that position, I share this story of Mountain Lions and other animals, yes, sadly including a Koala.

7 new breeds have just become eligible to compete at the Westminster dog show. | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The dogs are unique and adorable, but is all of this OK?
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I love dogs and these breeds look delightful, but is it really good for animals to be bred into stereotypes? My corgi was a champion, my Airedale was just a delight, and my poodle terrier mix was a queen; the papers for two didn't make them better then the one. Nor did those papers make them healthier. Anyway, if you're a dog lover, you'll find this fascinating reading and great pictures.
