What President Obama Achieved in Eight Years

What President Obama Achieved in Eight Years | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
President Obama's record is bigger and more substantial than even he allowed himself to admit.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This is a pretty good  overview of the Obama presidency. I would add that his inexperience is seen in the administrative failures, for example in the VA and in laughing Obamacare, and in foreign affairs by what I saw as the often destructive manipulations of Hilary Clinton as SOS. Sadly, had he either been elected in a better economy or if he had been able to wait a few years in the wings and the Senate to grow his connections and governing skills, Mr. Obama may have made an even greater and better mark on our country. Since the author of this piece doesn't seem to mention it, I also want to give credit in two areas. Obama has been a decent steward of the environment and of our natural lands and a good friend to the Native Americans, who have long deserved better treatment.

Anyway, thanks Barak for the memories, now America turns to a new leader and we hope he will have the same qualities of decency and trustworthiness that you have shown.

In an Oval Office interview for POLITICO's Off Message podcast, the president offers his most expansive comments yet on the race to succeed him in the White House.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I prefer Bernie and Mr. Obama apparently prefers Hillary, he continues to impress me with his careful thought and self-effacing approach to the office. I think Mr. Obama has done a more than credible job and once again demonstrates that he is a statesman in a world of pols.

Bastrop residents fear that a military exercise will be used spy on them, confiscate their guns and establish martial law.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What a sad bunch of idiots many Americans have become. If Mr. Obama, or anyone, wanted to take over the country and set himself as dictator, why would he start that process in Bastrop County? Hell, they don't even have a good place to eat or a still worth a revenuers time.

Last decade, they didn't like the United States and wanted us out of Iraq. Both are reversed now.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The world sees us more favorably because of Mr. Obama's policies; so what is wrong with the American people that we can't appreciate his efforts to make our nation more rational and less the crazed state-builder? For my part, I wish we would do more to build connection to other power-states and do even less to try to control the world's events.

Obama to limit military-style equipment for local police departments

Obama to limit military-style equipment for local police departments | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
President Obama plans to stop the federal government from distributing some military equipment to law enforcement agencies across the country, trimming back a practice that drew scrutiny amid concerns about the militarization of local police forces.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I wonder who will scream loudest, the NRA, the military-industrial-espionage complex with weapons to sell, or the law enforcement community. Any government that needs to use military weapons against its own citizens has lost legitimacy. Thankfully, such weapons are seldom needed in our country. When they are, the National/State Guard should be utilized. Mr. Obama is making the right move, but sadly years too late.

DEBRIEF | The president at the National Prayer Breakfast noted that his fellow Christians should not cast the first stone.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Who was it that said, "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?" Oh, wait wasn't that the guy they all claim to follow? I cannot stand America's Christian hypocrites who chose to know neither the realities of today nor the history which lead up to our problems. Those of us who think meaningful religious discourse is an important part of our national life should delight in a president who who is willing to address our failings and help us to become a better nation.

– Obama salutes Marine with coffee cup, outrage ensues | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

On his way to participate in a United Nations talk on Climate Change, and coming from his national address on airstrikes in Syria, President Barack Obama stepped off Marine One and proceeded to salute Marines with a coffee cup in his hand.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Even the Marine Times says it was not a big deal. From my perspective I give him credit for not tipping the cup and spilling coffee all over himself; that's what I would most likely have done.

What happens to whistle-blowers after the whistle is blown
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Since by its nature whistle-blowing involves revealing secrets, should there not be an independent process to decide if the secrets revealed are really a threat to the nation? IMHO the current administration tends to overreact to every leak. It is one reason I believe that Mr. Obama has been co-opted by the system.

Hiroshima

Hiroshima | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
President Barack Obama hugs Shigeaki Mori, an atomic bomb survivor and a creator of the memorial for American WWII POWs killed in Hiroshima, during a ceremony at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, Japan. (Carolyn Kaster)
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I have seen much condemnation of Mr. Obama for apologizing for the atomic bombs dropped on Japan. He didn't apologize. In fact, what he said went like this. "We come to Hiroshima to ponder the terrible forces unleashed in the not so distant past. We come to mourn the dead." Does anybody disagree with that sentiment? Secondly, he uttered his words at a specific memorial, the one for the American servicemen who died in the bombing. Once again, this POTUS has show his dignity and savvy while his critics look coldhearted and mean-spirited. I wonder why that is.

Here's What President Obama Is Reading This Summer

Here's What President Obama Is Reading This Summer | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
From Pulitzer-winning fiction to a biography of George Washington
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I'm glad that we have a President who reads. I'm delighted that he reads some fiction. Now, how do I get him copies of my books. I know he'd enjoy "Broody New Englander," would be fascinated by "Times to Try the Soul of Man," and absolutely know I was talking about Washington in "Memoirs From the Asylum." If you know Mr. Obama, please pass along this great reading recommendation; and be sure you check out my books for yourself.

In a soaring eulogy to the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, President Barack Obama spoke of grace’s power to heal, the nation’s enduring racial divide, and how last week’s killings in Emanuel AME Church offered a chance for a grieving cou
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I have two headings for things I post, Upsetment and Enjoy Yourself. I thought about this story, I meditated over it, I even cried a little. I am upset, but I also appreciate the joy that America can feel at this moment because we are capable of healing and because we have a president who can speak to our hearts and to the best of what we are. So I share this under the heading Enjoy Yourself and hope that as you read this story you will, as I have done, appreciate that the journey is not done, that we have a long way to go, but at least we are on the way.

Obama Hits the Links in California Amid Drought

Obama Hits the Links in California Amid Drought | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Golf courses in the Coachella Valley have been asked to reduce water use.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I don't begrudge him a round of golf, but while he is in California perhaps Mr. Obama can encourage not simply cutting down on water usage but also finding methods for reclaiming waste water and especially desalinization of sea water. Reclamation, especially when so much water is used in fracking and agriculture and when the Salton Sea becomes more and more contaminated threatening the Imperial Valley, well that's just good long-term thinking. By the way, hidden is this story is one of the most damning water-use factoids in California; they don't consider water direct from the Colorado as quality water. Yes, it needs to be treated, but it is still one of their primary water sources.

What were Obama's favorite childhood books?

What were Obama's favorite childhood books? | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
On a recent visit to a Washington library, Obama told students that he doesn't have much time for 'fun' reading these days. But he also eagerly shared the titles that he enjoyed as a boy.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What, not one of my books on his list?! I wonder if I can send him a couple. I think he'd enjoy "Broody New Englander." Oh, "Memoirs From the Asylum" might give him ideas about how Congress functions. Then "Tales From the Dew Drop Inne" might help him understand the GOP. Of course, "Times to Try the Soul of Man" would be a great pick if he really cares about what the CIA and NSA might be up to. I'll leave "Widow's Walk" out, the Secret Service might decide I was a threat.

How President Obama unwinds

How President Obama unwinds | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Presidents have perhaps the most stressful job in the world. For Barack Obama, recharging his batteries requires a mix of golf, books, Nicorette — but most of all, time with his family.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I found this piece reassuring. I want somebody with a good personal balance running things. I may not always agree with Mr. Obama, but he seems like a man I'd like, We wouldn't golf or talk sports, since I don't do either; but perhaps we could talk books and family life. I just have to figure out how to send him a copy of one of my books. I think he'd enjoy Memoirs From the Asylum.

Obama Stifled Hillary’s Syria Plans and Ignored Her Iraq Warnings for Years

Obama Stifled Hillary’s Syria Plans and Ignored Her Iraq Warnings for Years | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The rift between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama over Syria that spilled into public view this week was three years in the making and was about much more than just arming the rebels.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It seems to this observer that both approaches are fraught with peril. The most rational thing would have been to let the Russians, whose client state Syria is, take the lead. The other big player in the Syrian civil war is Iran, guardian of the Shi'ia, who make up a sizable portion of the Syrian population. The only American ally who has a serious concern about Syria is Israel, who may well have helped create the chaos.  Finally, there are the Turks, who might be concerned, but who certainly have done nothing I know of to get us involved. My bottom line, the U.S. shouldn't see itself as the world's policeman. Hell, we have trouble handling our police at home.
