Medical marijuana doctors loses license to practice - The Boston Globe

Medical marijuana doctors loses license to practice - The Boston Globe | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Both doctors certified thousands of patients, working in practices devoted solely to medical marijuana.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I am a strong supporter of medical marijuana and a strong supporter of legalizing weed, but I am not a strong supporter of irresponsibility. health practitioners who recommend using pot, and especially those who certify patients for its use, have a great responsibility to use judgment and clinical skill, not to become a rubber stamp for those wanting an easy way to obtain their drug. Even if marijuana had been legal in Massachusetts, this physician would have been acting irresponsibly by recommending it to this woman.

The early results are in.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

A promising beginning. Of course, the real question is where those treated addicts go with their lives after release from rehab. Hopefully it will be into supportive programs, jobs, and decent lives. What is clear to me is that if they simply spiral back into addiction it might have made more sense to withhold the detox drug and allowed them to die. Which gets us to some number. If only one person in ten is saved, does that justify the program? One in twenty? Perhaps one in the hundred? What is your thinking?

Firestorm Erupts in Anti-Smoking Massachusetts Town

Firestorm Erupts in Anti-Smoking Massachusetts Town | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Residents of Westminster object to becoming the first in the country to ban the sale of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The question of prohibition raised once again. What is it in our country, don't we get it yet? We shouldn't be prohibiting the rights of individuals unless they directly impact the well-being of others. My belief: From the right or the left, prohibition is wrong. Smoke just not around others. Drink your Big Gulp. Go to the bar, but don't drive afterwards. Buy a gun, but not if you can't use it without harming people. Have an abortion if you must. Light up that joint, but recognize it might have neurological consequences We have as a society the right and obligation to try to educate you, to explain why your smoking is self-harmful, why drinking that soda is the same, why that abortion is (in our view) morally wrong, how to handle that gun, what addiction is. BUT we must not presume the right to impose our views on your individual behavior if it doesn't directly affect others. Prohibition was wrong when it was about drinking, and it is still the wrong approach for America. What is great is that the people of this small town in Massachusetts are ready to fight for individual liberty. That is the ultimate American value.

Fifty Authors from Fifty States: Beans and Cod by Kenneth Weene

Fifty Authors from Fifty States: Beans and Cod by Kenneth Weene | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

“You’re going to boarding school,” my father proclaimed. It was December 1954. I was thirteen, in ninth grade and not really ready for this dramatic announcement. I was not, however, completely surprised. My father didn’t like me; that had been amply demonstrated the summer before. I could not forgive his rages and my multiple humiliations. From everything he said, it was obvious he could not remember any of those horrible episodes. Any references to the summer’s events met a look of incomprehension.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

I seldom right non-fiction, but I wanted to offer a different take on my "home state" of Massachusetts. Hope you find it interesting. By the way, if you comment, you may win a free copy of one of my books.

Lawmakers approve sweeping gun bill in Massachusetts House - The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram

Lawmakers approve sweeping gun bill in Massachusetts House - The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The head of the Massachusetts Gun Owners Action League, said the group supports the changes in the bill related to gun owners, particularly the requirement that police chiefs state in writing their reasons for denying licenses.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

At last, a spark of sanity can cooperation in the gun debate. Obviously, permits for weapons should only be denied for good and stated reasons, and those denied weapons should have an opportunity to challenge that decision in court. At the same time, there are people who clearly shouldn't have guns, not because guns are bad but because they have proven themselves to be dangerous people.
