After 200 years the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band has access once again to sacred ceremonial grounds at Mount Umunhum in the San Francisco Bay area.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Something to make us a little happier about the world in which we live. After many years, the Amah Mutsun people have new access to their sacred places and we all have a a beautiful natural place to celebrate. It may not be Maine, but it makes this Broody New Englander happy to see.

The recommendation marks the first time that LAPD Chief Charlie Beck has called for charges in a fatal on-duty shooting.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is good to see that in some cases police violence will be properly scrutinized. Of course, the trial hasn't yet begun and we certainly don't know the verdict, but at least there is a beginning.

Golf courses in the Coachella Valley have been asked to reduce water use.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I don't begrudge him a round of golf, but while he is in California perhaps Mr. Obama can encourage not simply cutting down on water usage but also finding methods for reclaiming waste water and especially desalinization of sea water. Reclamation, especially when so much water is used in fracking and agriculture and when the Salton Sea becomes more and more contaminated threatening the Imperial Valley, well that's just good long-term thinking. By the way, hidden is this story is one of the most damning water-use factoids in California; they don't consider water direct from the Colorado as quality water. Kenneth Weene's insight:

Another reason to consider Obama a great president, his efforts in protecting the environment and especially areas of unique beauty in America. He has used his office to protect over 265 million acres of land and water, more than any other administration.

California’s Saint, and a Church’s Sins

Pope Francis will canonize the Rev. Junipero Serro next month. But to Native Americans, that story has a dark side.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I look at history, at what man —even among the best of men — has done to his fellow in the name of God, and wonder if religion is perhaps the creation of the Devil. Certainly it allows us to feel a tribal identity and superiority. Today those feelings are clearly seen in Jerusalem, in ISIS, in Chinese treatment of minorities (yes, China's religion being their brand of communism), and in the Republican party.  Van Pope Francis canonize this symbol of Euro-American destruction of the Native population in a way that recognizes his faith while condemning his methods and inhumanity?
