Baby boomers are heading inexorably into the peak risk years for the disease.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
It isn't just the financial cost that matters but the horrible emotional price paid by those with Alzheimer's and those who love these patients; fighting this scourge of the elderly (and often not so elderly) is important, including finding if their are environmental factors that contribute to the increasing numbers of sufferers. For my part, as an older person, I think we need to increase the availability of assisted suicide for those who wish it and instruct it when competent. Not only would this save our healthcare system great amounts of money but would make our society a more humane one. Have you dealt with dementia in somebody you love(d)? At what point would they have wanted the relief of death?

There is no cure at this time for the deadly Alzheimer’s disease. The care of those with Alzheimer’s takes patience, kindness and understanding. There is no way to know on any given day whether the person afflicted the deadly Alzheimer’s will look at a family member, relative or friend and even know who they are or why they are around. Their world as they once knew it no longer exists.
