Kelly A. Roper's curator insight, June 9, 2013 12:33 AM

PicLits (2013) is a fantastic Web 2.0 teaching tool for inspiring communication and creativity in your classroom. It provides students with aesthetic stand-out images and word banks for writing a caption, short paragraph or poem. Students can comment on the work of their peers and even leave them a star rating. As a teacher, I plan on using PicLits to introduce creative writing in the following ways:

By choosing an image to show on the interactive whiteboard and encouraging students to then, either collaboratively or independently, discuss words they might use to tell a story about what is happening in that image. To prompt students when writing journal or blog entriesIn Science or SOSE projects to describe the nature of those photos and what is happening in them

I also plan to use PicLit when teaching Mathematics to develop 1-to-1 correspondence, illustrate real world mathematical problems of space and volume and to recognise and describe various shapes (PicLit, 2013).

There are endless ways to use PicLit in the classroom that can only be limited by the teacher’s lack of imagination. The Australian Standards for Teachers (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, 2013) makes it clear in focus area 2.6 that teachers need to implement strategies for using ICT to expand curriculum learning opportunities for students and I believe PicLit is one very effective resource to help teachers achieve this.

15 Tech Toys Turn Play into Learning - Intel iQ

15 Tech Toys Turn Play into Learning - Intel iQ | Enhancing Students 21st Century Thinking Skills | Scoop.it
From an electricity-generating soccer ball to a doll that chats and remembers previous conversations, a sampling of new tech toys take play beyond the screen and into the real world – all while augmenting education and play.

Just when many parents feared they’d lost their children to the screen, concerned that their growing brains might be stunted from too many hours crushing gumdrops, tech toy developers have come to the rescue.

Capitalizing on recent advances in technology, developers are now creating toys designed to build brain power and skills. Unsuspecting children — Shhhh! — continue to believe it’s all fun and games.
