A group of up to nine foreign nationals have been abducted by insurgents in eastern Afghanistan, reports say.

The group were taken after the civilian helicopter in which they were travelling made a forced landing in Azra district in Logar province.

The district is known to be a Taliban-controlled area and the Taliban have told the BBC they have the group.

Jon Smith's curator insight, May 20, 2013 1:03 AM

Ten foreigners were captured after their helicopter had to make a forced landing in Eastern Afghanistan. There is known to be a strong Taliban presence there and the Taliban have reported to BBC that they have the foreigners. The ten people consisted of 7 Turks, one Afghan and also two Russian pilots. Turkey is already trying to make negotiations. Apparently, Afghanistan has been a very problematic area as there is an American Sergeant who has been jailed there for four years. These are intolerable injustices that countries need to stand up against and make even bigger steps towards getting rid of. How long must these conflicts go on? Hopefully this situation gets resolved.

U.S. lawmakers from both parties on Sunday criticized the FBI for failing to spot the extremist leanings of one of the men suspected of being behind the deadly Boston Marathon bombings, wondering why the agency did not at least follow up with the elder brother following a six-month trip to Russia in 2012.

Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-South Carolina) went so far as to say ‘the ball was dropped’ by the federal agency by either missing ‘a lot of things’ during their initial investigation of suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, or did not allow investigators to ‘follow up in a sound, solid way.’

Under the barrage of attacks, the FBI has stood by their initial public statement issued earlier last week, which said that the agency closed their investigation on the ethnic Chechen in 2011 after failing to find any ‘terrorism activity, domestic or foreign.’

More than 20 schools in the Dutch city of Leiden have been told to stay closed on Monday amid police concerns over a threat to carry out a mass shooting.

The anonymous threat, made on a website, outlined a plan to target a school and teacher in the city, but did not name either.

Police responded by advising all secondary schools and vocational schools to stay closed for the day.

There are reported to be around 22 such schools in the university city.

"Police have received mention about a possible school shooting (being planned) in Leiden," the authorities said in a statement.

The Boston bombers were planning more attacks across the city and were already building the bombs to do this says the city's police commisioner Ed Davis.

The Boston bombers were planning more attacks across the city and were already building the bombs to do this says the city's police commissioner Ed Davis.

Davis says it's his belief that 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his 26-year-old brother Tamerlan 'were going to attack other individuals' — and Davis says that's based on the evidence at the scene and the cache of weapons the brothers had at their disposal.

However, Davis claims releasing photos of the two Boston Marathon bombing suspects 'forced them out of their hideout' and spurred them into Thursday and Friday's deadly night time car chaos and gun battle with law enforcement.

'It forced them out of their hideout and they decided to commit further violent acts. But it’s my belief that they were already manufacturing explosive devices. Further violent acts were inevitable,' Davis told The Boston Globe.

Janae Rensch's curator insight, May 8, 2013 2:24 PM

The Boston bomber is faces charges that can potentially lead up to the death penalty. While Massachusetts doesn't allow the death penalty the bomber has charges against him that can carry on to the death penalty. He had killed three people and had injured over 180 people. He became a citizen in September of 2012. Tsarnaev had also killed a police officer at the event and decisions are still being made on what to do with the 19-year-old boy. The police had not read the Miranda rights to him and even though it could be in the safety it could also be a bad decision and ruin evidence for the future attacks that he might have done.

Janae Rensch's comment, May 8, 2013 2:27 PM
I don't think Tsarnaev had the right to bomb Boston for no reason or even with a reason. He killed three people and injured many many more. I feel like he deserves to be on death row because he hurt so many people by bombing Boston. His brother should be on death row too but he was killed by Tsarnaev because he ran over him. Tsarnaev also shot a police officer at scene, and I don't feel like 5 years in jail or more is long enough for something he did on purpose to hurt people who did nothing to him.
