VIDEO: Claes Oldenburg, The Street and The Store - at MoMA | Artinfo | English Usage for French Insights | Scoop.it
Claes Oldenburg began his extraordinary pop art career in the 1960s by transforming everyday objects - such as banana sundaes, hamburgers and street signs - into whimsical sculptural depictions.
whynot's insight:

La langue française cartonne | English Usage for French Insights | Scoop.it

A new Grand Tour

A new Grand Tour | English Usage for French Insights | Scoop.it

IN THE grounds of King's College, Cambridge, grows perhaps the most famous willow tree in China. It was immortalised by Xu Zhimo, a 20th-century poet with all the attributes required for lasting celebrity: talent, a rackety love life and a dramatic early death (plane crash at 34). With each passing year, growing crowds of Chinese tourists visit the tree and a nearby marble boulder inscribed with lines from Xu's poem, “On leaving Cambridge”.

Blogging: "not drinking poison in paris" | English Usage for French Insights | Scoop.it

The remarkable hyperactivity of Paris food-blogging is partly due to the outsize international attention paid what is essentially a medium-sized, semi-provincial city. Thirty million tourists per year arrive in Paris; before, during, and after their vacations, they constitute a readership.

Feminists want 'phallic' Eiffel Tower torn down | The Local

Feminists want 'phallic' Eiffel Tower torn down | The Local | English Usage for French Insights | Scoop.it

Several feminist groups in France have united to launch a campaign to have the country’s iconic Eiffel Tower torn down, saying the 124-year-old monument was a 'phallic' symbol of France's outdated male-dominated culture. One feminist group called 'Tour pour Tous' wants it replaced by a Tour 'Eiffelle'.

'Cesare Deve Morire'

'Cesare Deve Morire' | English Usage for French Insights | Scoop.it

“Cesare Deve Morire” is the Taviani brothers’ latest work in a joint career that spans more than six decades, and won them the Golden Bear at last year’s Berlin International Film Festival. A documentary about inmates at Rome’s maximum-security prison Rebibbia, it follows their lives from the day that they’re told they will stage a production of William Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” moves through the weeks of rehearsals, then reaches an impressive climax at a public performance.

Beijing disease is China’s disease – English

Beijing disease is China’s disease – English | English Usage for French Insights | Scoop.it

English translation via Marco Polo Project -

"In fact, it’s a mistake to say that the layout of Beijing is based on a Soviet model. Perhaps the architecture comes from Soviet design, but the highly-concentrated city plan is in fact a continuation of the city from the feudal age. In the traditional dynastic days, the emperor, bureaucrats, and nobles were the heads of city life, whereas common city residents occupied an extremely subordinate position, acting only as servants to the elites."
