Free Technology for Teachers: Type Rocket - A Quick Game for Typing Practice

Free Technology for Teachers: Type Rocket - A Quick Game for Typing Practice | English Language Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

"Type Rocket is a free typing game from ABCya that Joanne Villis reminded me of in one of her recent posts. Type Rocket is a sixty second game in which students make fireworks explode by typing the letters that appear on the rockets in the games. In the sixty second span of the game students try to correctly type as many letters as they possibly can. The rockets speed up as the game progresses."

Word Booster

Word Booster | English Language Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

It gives you a list of words you are likely to look up in the dictionary as far as the given text is concerned, guesses a good dictionary definition for the words along with example sentences. And finally, it also makes a quiz for the words using both the definitions and example sentences. (Of course we give you the answer key too.)

This is a great free tool for creating word lists and vocabulary quizzes from online text. It works within minutes. A great time saver.

Hello Nik! I am Andrew, the creator of Word Booster. Thanks for writing about us! We are holding a webinar on Sept. 8th of 2017 at 10:30 GMT, and you could hear the journey of how we have developed Word Booster. (https://forum.oxforddictionaries.com/api/discussion/78/webinar-word-booster-the-making-of-of-the-oxford-dictionaries-api-competition-winner#latest) We won the first prize at Oxford Dictionaries API Contest 2017.

If you are using higher level text for your ESL/EFL students to read, you might want to take a few minutes and check this site out.  It works with online articles, and by just copying and pasting the URL, in less than 60 seconds, you will have vocabulary words highlighted, a word list with definitions and a vocabulary quiz with an answer key.  I love that it did all of that work for me in less time than it took me to check my log in and check my email!

I love using comics with my English language learners!  I confess that I haven't used them the way this article has.  Click on the link below the comic and you will be directed to a lesson plan all ready to go.  I've used comics for sequencing (cut them up and students put them back in order based on the dialogue) and have covered up all the words so students have to write their own dialogues.  Try one of these ideas from the article or from me soon!

8 YouTube Tools to Help Learn English | PeacheyPublications.com | English Language Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
It always amazes me that despite being the world’s largest video library, YouTube is still blocked or banned in many educational institutions. As a resource for learning about almost anything, but particularly for language learning it is an incredibly valuable tool and a tool that many third party companies have started to build on and exploit to make its use easier and more engaging.
