Motivation: The Overlooked Sixth Component of Reading

Motivation: The Overlooked Sixth Component of Reading | English Teaching and Language Learning | Scoop.it

Learners are motivated by three factors: desire to learn, incentives, or fear of failure. As we grow, most of the early curiosity is tested away, and school becomes work. Obstacles increase, desire to learn decreases, and incentives and/or fear of failure move to the forefront. Jack Canfield, self-esteem expert, reports that 80 percent of first graders posses high self-esteem, but by high school graduation, this drops to a staggering five percent.

Bonnie Burns's curator insight, June 30, 2:01 PM

Writing product descriptions is important, both to SEO and to your conversion rate. It’s also something that most people find pretty difficult. Some products aren’t that exciting and don’t lend themselves well to fanciful descriptions. Other times people get confused about keywords and how to use them in their product descriptions. More often than not, people just use the descriptions provided by the manufacturer.

It’s a nagging presence in the back of your mind, even if you still insist on using a cassette player from the 1980s in your classroom. The world is changing even if you are in denial.

When my students leave high school, they will need to know norms and etiquette for their devices. Eventually, they should know when to put their phone away because it's distracting them, or when listening to music while they work is slowing them down.

After all, I am a practitioner of content, not a tech guru. But the way I see it, I work to not only help guide students to unveil the subject matter (consume), I also work to be up on the most current ways to communicate that content (create). Hence, my willingness to jump out of my wheelhouse, the shallow end of the ed tech pool, and into the deep end of total tech immersion.

The only way to learn was to jump in and jump in early, so I raised my hand."

Using Bloom's Taxonomy In The 21st Century: 4 Strategies For Teaching

Using Bloom's Taxonomy In The 21st Century: 4 Strategies For Teaching | English Teaching and Language Learning | Scoop.it

For decades, education reform has been focused on curriculum, assessment, instruction, and more recently standards, and data, with these efforts only bleeding over into how students think briefly, and by chance. This means that the focus of finite teacher and school resources are not on promoting thinking and understanding, but rather what kinds of things students are going to be thinking about and how they’ll prove they understand them.
