Social Media: What Schools Can Learn From Businesses - Edudemic | ENGLISH LEARNING 2.0 | Scoop.it

A recent study found that 100% of American universities engage in social media, but it is hard to find a college on a list of the best social media campaigns. Rather, you see those “best of” lists filled with businesses.

TED-Ed - Lessons Worth Sharing -

TED-Ed - Lessons Worth Sharing - | ENGLISH LEARNING 2.0 | Scoop.it

TED-Ed's mission is to capture and amplify the voices of great educators around the world. We do this by pairing extraordinary educators with talented animators to produce a new library of curiosity-igniting videos. A new site, which will launch in early April 2012, will feature these new TED-Ed Originals as well as some powerful new learning tools.

I  think we can all look forward to some inspiring and thought provoking educational videos when TED Ed launches. These will be 'crowdsourced' as TED seeks nominations for educators, animators  and lesson ideas to be included.

As a precursor the associated YouTube channel is now live and offers a flavour of the quality of the content to follow.

Don't Confuse Technology With Teaching

Don't Confuse Technology With Teaching | ENGLISH LEARNING 2.0 | Scoop.it
Though universities are rushing to embrace online courses, true education requires one mind engaging with another.

Educators are coaches, personal trainers in intellectual fitness. The value we add to the media extravaganza is like the value the trainer adds to the gym or the coach adds to the equipment. We provide individualized instruction in how to evaluate and make use of information and ideas, teaching people how to think for themselves.

Just as coaching requires individual attention, education, at its core, requires one mind engaging with another, in real time: listening, understanding, correcting, modeling, suggesting, prodding, denying, affirming, and critiquing thoughts and their expression.

The material and spiritual go hand-in-hand, but the material has proven origins(the "big bang") and as such may have an inescapable end(annihilation), but will the spiritual survive its boon companion, the material?

Google is Not God: We Need a New Philosophy for Education and Technology

Google is not God, but the omnipresent search engine commands an unworldly level of trust from its followers.

If they’re naive at Googling, it’s because the ability to judge information is almost never taught in school. Under 2001′s No Child Left Behind Act, elementary and high schools focus on prepping their pupils for reading and math exams.

===> And by the time kids get to college, professors assume they already have this skill. <===

Best Places To Educate Yourself Online For Free

Best Places To Educate Yourself Online For Free | ENGLISH LEARNING 2.0 | Scoop.it
The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.

All education is self-education. Period. It doesn’t matter if you’re sitting in a college classroom or a coffee shop. We don’t learn anything we don’t want to learn.

Those people who take the time and initiative to pursue knowledge on their own are the only ones who earn a real education in this world.

Take a look at any widely acclaimed scholar, entrepreneur or historical figure you can think of. Formal education or not, you’ll find that he or she is a product of continuous self-education.
