Visual Notetaking in the Classroom

Visual Notetaking in the Classroom | English Learners K-12 | Scoop.it
An ELL teacher encourages her students to think critically by using visual notetaking in class, a technique that allows them to synthesize what they are learning in a creative and fun way.
Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

Critical thinking and creativity to enhance language and literacy for ELs.  I appreciate Wendi's reflection after her initial use of visual learning, "I was learning more than my students."  She gives powerful examples of how to take something that is wonderful to do as a teacher and transform it into an active learning opportunity for every learner in the room.   The incorporation of collaborative conversations makes this a go-to strategy for building language and thinking about texts.

English Grammar Gems: 6 Common Phrasal Verbs and their different meanings | English with a Twist

English Grammar Gems: 6 Common Phrasal Verbs and their different meanings | English with a Twist | English Learners K-12 | Scoop.it

As a lot of you know, I think that infographics are a great, visual way of communicating grammar points or vocabulary chunks to learners. In today’s post, I’d like to share with you this inforgraphic by Grammar.net to introduce verbs + prepositions and those ‘dreaded’ phrasal verbs!

Via Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.
Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

Often when it seems an ELL doesn't know prepositions, the real root of the "error"  has to do with a phrasal verb.    Bottom line:  English is complex.  The better we understand our own language, the better we can help others  learn and use it in meaningful contexts.

ESL and Classroom Teachers Team Up to Teach Common Core

ESL and Classroom Teachers Team Up to Teach Common Core | English Learners K-12 | Scoop.it
In some schools, the new standards are leading to a closer collaboration between content-area teachers and those who serve students with special needs.
Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

Collaboration among ELL and content teachers is key for advancing EL learning with CCSS.  Thank you, Lesli Maxwell, for this excellent article to sharing different models to consider.

Rather than deploying ELL teachers as consultants to content teachers, as recommended by a TESOL group, I recommend we bring ELL and content teachers together as parners who can support and challenge one anothers' practice.  Collaboration among educators goes deepest when we bring people together as partners rather than setting up a situation in which one person is assumed to have all the answers.

I often find that content teachers bring to the ELL table clarity about the rigor of language and literacy tasks in content classrooms.  ELL experts bring depth of knowledge about language and appropriate scaffolds to engage every student.

The synthesis of these different perspectives and instructional strengths is dynamic and imperative to help ELLs excel with the Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards.

Let's continue to ask tough questions, and come together to innovate solutions that help our ELL students both do well in school, and thrive in 21st century careers.

Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

This sobering data is based on the old standards and assessments.  With the ramp up in standards, and shifts in assessment accommodations in the comming years we must especially pay attention to EL performance and collaborate to innovate so that EL students realize dramatically different results.

A Look at ELL Performance So Far on Common-Core-Aligned Tests

A Look at ELL Performance So Far on Common-Core-Aligned Tests | English Learners K-12 | Scoop.it
Results on common-core-aligned tests from New York and the District of Columbia show that English-learners and their teachers have their work cut out for them to meet the more-demanding academic goals.
Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

As the rigor increases, scores go down. While we must be understanding of the diverse proficiency levels of ELs, and also strive to create tests that accurately assess EL learning with content standards, there is an opportunity here in the data.  Any way you slice it, there is a call in our profession to step up how we help ELs build language and content in tandem. ELs of all proficiency levels are capable of critical thinking and complex literacy and problem-solving tasks.  We must help them thrive with these from day one AS they learn English.

Demographics Divide Parents' Views of Schools, Poll Finds

Demographics Divide Parents' Views of Schools, Poll Finds | English Learners K-12 | Scoop.it
Minority and low-income parents are more likely to see serious problems in their schools than those who are affluent or white, according to an AP-NORC poll.
Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

What stands out for me in this article is the number of minority and low-income parents citing low expectations as a major concern for their children.  They are spot on in identifying an unspoken challenge in many schools. Even outstanding educators with 100% dedication to minority students can fall into the problem of accepting the status quo of current performance as status quo. We must always be visionary, and never see a students' current performance as indication of their future potential.  We must be the advocates for high expectations for every child.  Students rise (or fall) to the level of our expectations.

The papers on this site are outstanding for leading professional learning discussions about language, literacy and Common Core achievement for ELs.  Important message:  it is important to engage ALL learners in rigorous critical-thinking tasks even before they have perfect language. We learn academic language by using academic language. Don't exclude ELs from what they most need to teach a watered-down curriculum.  Scaffold, model and guide so they excel with academic challenges!
