The rise of the anti-standardized testing movement

The rise of the anti-standardized testing movement | English Language Arts teaching resources | Scoop.it

By Monty Neill

"Across the nation, resistance to test overuse and misuse reached unprecedented heights in the spring of 2014. The rapidly growing movement built on significant test opposition unleashed in 2013.  This year, resistance erupted in more states with far more participants, and it won notable victories, such as ending, lessening or postponing graduation exams in at least eight states and easing or ending grade promotion tests."

The depth of complexity in developing quality assessments aligned to quality standards actively delivered through quality instruction is stretching the capacity of individuals and groups to get the  job done. Checking off boxes in a form field is not a measure of quality. Quality is determined through actual examination of outcomes and products.

How to Design Projects Around Common Core Standards

How to Design Projects Around Common Core Standards | English Language Arts teaching resources | Scoop.it

by Heather Wolpert-Gawron

description by MiddleWeb SmartBrief

"When designing project-based lessons, educators should focus first on what excites them -- the content -- and then seek ways to apply the Common Core State Standards, writes middle-grades educator Heather Wolpert-Gawron. In this blog post, she describes her planning process for a project based on superheroes. Her first draft naturally addressed many standards and she later added components to teach others."

Grit is a life skill!

"Grit is hanging in and never giving up, but it’s more than that. Grit is being comfortable when you are outside of your comfort zone, and it’s forging ahead when you hit the wall because you know that you’ll get up and continue moving forward."
