W. Bradley Gooderham's insight:

Why grammar lessons still have a place in modern English classes.   I read that article in the Atlantic last month and it also had some very interesting points.   Should be a good (and eternal) debate.

W. Bradley Gooderham's insight:

Poetry is for the love of language and we can teach it that way.   Let's get our kids excited about creative and contemplative expression.  Thinking differently about langage and the capacity to explore different approaches will help them in every aspect of their learning and it can all start with a sonnet, a haiku, and a limerick!

Canadian Education Committee wants to ban talking animals from childrens books | This is That with Pat Kelly and Peter Oldring | CBC Radio | English Language Arts Resources | Scoop.it
The newly appointed Chair of the Canadian Education Committee raised a few eyebrows this week by announcing that he would like to see all books with talking animals removed from Canadian schools.
W. Bradley Gooderham's insight:

Controversial new legislation from leaders in Canadian education policy.   What do you think?  This is time to think critically about how we learn and the information we use to judge our directions in pedagogy.

Why Teaching Poetry Is So Important

Why Teaching Poetry Is So Important | English Language Arts Resources | Scoop.it
The oft-neglected literary form can help students learn in ways that prose can't.
W. Bradley Gooderham's insight:

When I told my student the new unit was on Poetry the collective thunk of heads colliding with tables and hands and (mis)preconceptions was excruciating for me as a teacher.   What has happened to make young people, children raised on Seuss and nursery rhyme, go limp and moan at the mention of Haiku or the intimation of a Limerick?

Poetry should excite and crackle with excitement, tension, passion, and sadness.   It should be deeply personal in writing and as one derives meaning.   That is what my class is all about.   Ask the kids what they think about poetry now and the thunk you hear may be the sound of feet hitting the floor as Noah jumps to his feet to recite in ominous tones "Jabberwocky" or Lily's metronomic pacing as she recounts "The Owl and the Pussycat" by heart and on the spot.

Do I have an 'O, Captain! My Captain!' complex?  Of course, don't you?
