"Coursebooks are..." - Cambridge Conversations | English for International Students | Scoop.it
There’s a perennial debate in the ELT profession about the value – or lack thereof – of coursebooks in the classroom. The great Scott Thornbury and many other high-profile thinkers in our field often question loudly the value of coursebooks and argue that classrooms would generally be better off without them. So when I asked …

Embracing Messy Learning

Embracing Messy Learning | English for International Students | Scoop.it

I am slowly learning to embrace the struggles that students experience as they engage with authentic work. If I don't allow learning to be messy, I eliminate authentic experiences for students as thinkers and creators. I find it important to regularly remind myself that frustration leads to insights and that learning is not necessarily the equivalent of mastery.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, August 8, 9:46 PM

Learning is messy. It is a recurring process which is always recommencing itself.

@ivon_ehd1

magnus sandberg's curator insight, August 9, 4:24 AM

The article is good, but what I really love is the term "messy learning" itself. So much teaching in school has the ideal of creating clairity and being systematic in every part of the learning process. But that is simply not how learning happens. We need to embrace the messyness!

Josh Round's curator insight, August 10, 12:08 PM

The messy learning described here mirrors the struggles and frustrations our Learners face in communicative classrooms - a inherent part of the process of learning a language.

The e-textbook transformation

The e-textbook transformation | English for International Students | Scoop.it

A new wave of e-textbooks is giving students more than just words and a few hotlinks on a digital page. Publishers over the last few years have been adding video, interactive maps and gamified quizzes designed to engage students more deeply in their learning.

This site is timely as schools move from hard copy to etexts.

Martin Debattista's curator insight, July 25, 2:22 AM

A transformation which is not a revolution. It will take time and effort.  It's important we give it the space to take its natural course.

Angela C. Dowd's curator insight, July 25, 2:11 PM

Thank you Nik. I like reading about innovations like e-textbook transformation that make learning more accessible to all students.

Oxford University Press Launches e-books for Learning English Through Microsoft’s Office 365

Oxford University Press Launches e-books for Learning English Through Microsoft’s Office 365 | English for International Students | Scoop.it
Oxford, Oxfordshire (PRWEB UK) 9 July 2014 -- Oxford University Press has collaborated with Microsoft to make its enhanced e-books solution, Oxford Learner’s Bookshelf, available through Office 365, a SharePoint app. The app transforms Oxford’s coursebooks and Readers for learning English into smart digital books with a balance of interactivity that encourages students to study independently at home, and tools that help teachers to engage students in the classroom.

Ruby Rennie Panter's curator insight, July 16, 4:36 AM

A very interesting development from Oxford University Press. If you want to use the books on your iPad, it seems you have to first download the "Oxford Learning Bookshelf" app (free: https://itunes.apple.com/app/oxfordlearnersbookshelf/id617832312) and then within in the app you can get the books. Some books appear to be available only for institutions, and as yet I can't find a way to be able to evaluate them.
